Best Bitrate Settings for Live Streaming: YouTube and Twitch

The right live-stream bitrate depends on your platform, codec, resolution and frame rate. Compare YouTube and Twitch recommendations and learn how to keep a stream stable.

There is no single best bitrate for every live stream. Match the bitrate to your platform, video codec, resolution and frame rate, then make sure your upload connection and encoder can sustain it. For 1080p60, current official examples range from Twitch’s conventional 6,000 kbps profile to YouTube’s 17 Mbps H.264 recommendation—so the destination and codec matter.

Recommended live-stream bitrates at a glance

These figures are platform-published ingest recommendations or example profiles, not results of an independent comparison. Keep YouTube and Twitch settings separate: they are not interchangeable.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these recommended bitrates. H.264 values differ from AV1 and H.265/HEVC values.

Twitch conventional profiles

Twitch’s conventional examples use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. The examples below are not universal maximums for every account or streaming mode.

Output Example bitrate
1080p60 6,000 kbps
1080p30 4,500 kbps
720p60 4,500 kbps
720p30 3,000 kbps

For these conventional examples, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. See Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines.

Why 1080p60 has different answers

For YouTube, the recommended 1080p60 ingest bitrate is 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265. Twitch’s conventional 1080p60 example is 6,000 kbps. These settings describe different platforms and, in YouTube’s case, different codecs; choosing a number without those qualifiers can produce the wrong configuration.

How to choose a bitrate your setup can sustain

  1. Choose the destination and mode. Start with the platform’s current encoder guidance. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, with bitrate recommendations that vary by codec. Twitch’s conventional profiles differ from its Enhanced Broadcasting path.
  2. Set resolution and frame rate to match your content and hardware. Higher resolutions and frame rates need more bitrate or encoding headroom. If your computer or connection struggles, lower the output demands rather than forcing a larger bitrate.
  3. Check real upload performance. Run a speed test and consider the upload capacity you can sustain reliably, not just the speed listed on an ISP plan. Leave room for normal variation; a stream that repeatedly drops or disconnects is not improved by a higher target bitrate.
  4. Use the bitrate for the chosen platform, codec and output. Do not carry a YouTube H.264 recommendation over to HEVC, AV1 or Twitch. Check the destination’s current instructions if its streaming mode or account features differ.
  5. Use the recommended rate control and keyframe interval. For the YouTube guidance and Twitch conventional profiles covered here, use CBR with a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  6. Test a representative stream. Use similar audio and motion to the real broadcast, then check stream health. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live. If the connection is unstable, reduce video bitrate or lower resolution/frame rate and test again.

Encoder and audio settings that affect stream health

YouTube compatibility details

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio; for stereo audio, the advanced-settings bitrate is 128 kbps. It also recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. For HDR, the guidance recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit; it says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

These compatibility options do not replace the headline bitrate choice. Confirm your encoder actually supports the selected codec and settings before relying on them.

Encoder load is separate from network bitrate

A high bitrate cannot fix an overloaded encoder. Twitch notes that x264 can tax the CPU and reduce game frame rate, while GPU encoding such as NVIDIA NVENC uses a dedicated encoder. If encoding load is the problem, test a supported hardware encoder or reduce output demands before considering new hardware.

Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting and 1440p

Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting can configure multiple client-side encodes automatically. Its configuration may vary between sessions to balance viewer experience, system performance and available bandwidth, so the conventional profiles above should not be treated as instructions for that mode. Read Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting documentation.

Twitch’s 2K/1440p offering is tied to Enhanced Broadcasting. In an announcement dated June 17, 2026, Twitch said 2K streaming was available to Partners and Affiliates and used HEVC. Eligibility and account availability can change; check the current Twitch documentation and your account before planning a 1440p broadcast. Twitch’s 2K streaming announcement.

Troubleshoot buffering, dropped frames and weak quality

  • Connection drops or stream health reports instability: lower video bitrate first, then test again. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate so the connection has more headroom.
  • Video looks poor despite a high bitrate: confirm that the bitrate matches the platform, codec and output. More bitrate helps only when the platform and connection can use it; it does not resolve encoder overload or an unreliable network.
  • Game performance falls while streaming: check encoder load. Test a supported hardware encoder or reduce resolution, frame rate or other encoder demands.
  • Keyframes or rate control are rejected or inconsistent: verify CBR and the 2-second keyframe interval for the conventional profiles covered here; for YouTube, do not exceed a 4-second interval.
  • Settings do not match the platform’s current options: recheck its official encoder instructions and account-specific mode. Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting may configure encodes differently from conventional profiles.

OBS also recommends lowering video bitrate when troubleshooting an unstable stream. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder setting: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.

Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
