Best Bitrate for a 24/7 Nature Video Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mostly static nature stream sourced at 30 fps, start at 1080p30 with a video bitrate of 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 14 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s current recommended live-ingestion settings, not a nature-specific formula or a guaranteed optimum. If your upload connection cannot sustain that rate, try 720p30 at 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 8 Mbps for H.264. The figures are video only; audio is additional.

Recommended bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec

YouTube publishes general live-encoder recommendations rather than a special bitrate for nature footage or streams that run continuously. The table shows its recommended video ingestion bitrate in Mbps. Audio is not included.

Input resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s current live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026; the guidance does not show a publication year. Treat the rate for the codec you actually send as the relevant one. Do not use the AV1/H.265 column for an H.264 stream.

Choosing settings for nature footage

Start with the source and the connection

Use the source footage’s frame rate rather than increasing it just to select a higher setting. For a 30 fps source and a stable upload, 1080p30 is a practical starting point. If the connection cannot reliably sustain its codec-specific recommended rate, step down to 720p30 rather than forcing a higher-resolution stream that repeatedly loses stability.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Account for motion and fine detail

A calm, nearly still landscape may compress more easily than wind-blown leaves, flowing water, rain or camera movement. Those scenes can make detail harder to preserve at the same bitrate. YouTube does not provide a nature-specific adjustment formula, so test the actual material instead of adding an arbitrary amount. Compare a representative stretch that includes the motion and changing light your stream is likely to show.

Decide whether 60 fps is useful

For a camera or recording that genuinely captures frequent motion at 60 fps, compare 30 fps and 60 fps in a test stream. YouTube’s recommended input rate increases with frame rate; for example, 1080p rises from 10 to 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265 and from 14 to 17 Mbps with H.264. The fact that a stream is nature footage does not by itself establish a need for 60 fps.

Minimum is not the recommended target

For the two common 30 fps choices, YouTube lists these minimum video rates: at 1080p30, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 5 Mbps for H.264; at 720p30, 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 3 Mbps for H.264. These minimums are not the recommended targets for best results.

Configure the encoder and YouTube stream

  1. Choose a codec supported by your encoder and ingestion path. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. If you are streaming HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR in the listed guidance.
  2. Set rate control to CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. Use the recommended video bitrate for the resolution, frame rate and codec you selected.
  3. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  4. Choose the protocol your setup supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current guidance also discusses HLS for cases where an encoder cannot support the specified capabilities over RTMP.
  5. Set resolution and frame rate to match the source. YouTube can detect them by default; manual selection is available through a custom stream key.
  6. Configure audio separately. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps stereo audio, or 384 Kbps for 5.1 AAC. Add the audio rate when estimating total upload use; it is not part of the video bitrate figures above.
  7. Test before going live. YouTube advises testing before the stream. Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast; for nature footage, use representative water, foliage, weather and day/night conditions where available.

For YouTube’s current recommendations and protocol details, see YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Plan for an unattended 24/7 stream

A bitrate that works during a short test is not proof that an upload connection will remain stable around the clock. Measure the connection and run a realistic test long enough to expose fluctuations. There is no universal bandwidth-reserve figure established here; choose a connection that can sustain the stream reliably, not one that only reaches the target momentarily.

Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during operation, and plan how you will notice and respond if the feed stops. The bitrate guidance does not prescribe a particular 24/7 failover system. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats, so the encoder’s ingest bitrate is not the playback bitrate every viewer receives.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream stability

  • The stream buffers, drops frames or loses connection: The upload may not be sustaining the selected rate. Test the connection and lower the resolution or frame rate, then use the matching bitrate recommendation. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • Fine details look smeared or blocky: Check that the encoder is using the correct codec-specific rate and that the source resolution is preserved. Test a scene with moving leaves, water or rain. If needed, compare a higher supported setting using a representative test rather than assuming a fixed nature-footage multiplier.
  • The encoder’s settings do not match the table: Verify the codec, resolution and frame rate actually being sent. A rate recommended for AV1/H.265 is not the H.264 recommendation, and 60 fps has different values from 30 fps.
  • Audio is missing or weak: Check the audio encoder and bitrate separately from video. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps stereo in its advanced settings.
  • HDR is not accepted with the selected codec: For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube’s listed guidance recommends H.265 and does not support AV1 for HDR.
