Should you choose Birkenstock Regular or Narrow?
Birkenstock’s US guide recommends Regular for medium-to-wide feet and Narrow for narrow-to-medium feet. Its guide represents Regular with an outlined foot symbol and Narrow with a filled one. The brand notes that Narrow fits most women’s feet, but that general guidance is not a substitute for measuring your own foot.

Birkenstock’s FAQ says its footbed is designed to let toes spread naturally. It also advises that significant room on either side may mean you need Narrow; even in Narrow, some side space should remain, and your foot should not ride up along the side rims. This additional guidance comes from Birkenstock UAE, so use it alongside the US fit guide rather than treating width labels as a universal fit rule.
How to check your Birkenstock size and fit
- Measure both feet. Use the official size chart to compare foot length and width in millimeters. The chart’s width measurements vary by size, so do not apply one measurement across all sizes.
- Use the printable template carefully, if you use it. Print at 100% scaling and check its scale with a ruler before relying on it.
- Confirm the exact product option. On the product listing, select your size and verify that Regular/Wide is offered for that size. Availability can change.
- Try the footwear with straps open. Birkenstock advises checking that your toes do not touch the footbed edge and aiming for about ¼ inch of space around your foot.
- Ease into wear. The brand recommends initially loosening the straps and wearing the footwear for 1–2 hours at a time around the house before increasing wear time.
These fit and break-in steps are Birkenstock’s own guidance, not independent test results.
