For a small channel that wants prerecorded videos to keep playing while its creator’s computer is off, cloud playout is the best fit among the options covered here. StreamNeo is the first service to consider: it runs an always-on YouTube stream from the cloud, plays uploaded videos at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. If you want local control and do not mind leaving a computer and connection running, OBS Studio is a free alternative. For camera-led shows, guests, scenes, or screen sharing, choose a production workflow rather than a simple playlist loop.
Choose the workflow before choosing the software
“Automated YouTube playout” can mean three different things. A playlist loop repeatedly plays uploaded recordings; scheduled playout starts a prerecorded broadcast at a chosen time; a live production combines cameras, guests, screen sharing, audio, and scenes. Cloud playlist tools are designed for the first two. A local encoder such as OBS or a browser studio is more appropriate when you need to produce a live show. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes encoders as a fit for screen sharing, external audio/video, and more advanced productions.

- Want a channel running from prerecorded videos while your computer is off? Compare cloud playout services.
- Want to control scenes and sources yourself? Use a local encoder or production studio and plan to keep it running.
- Want both? A playlist service and a production encoder solve different problems; verify that the chosen product supports the exact workflow you need.
The recommendations below are based on published product and help documentation, not hands-on reliability testing. No independent uptime comparison or viewer-growth effect is established.
Best options for a small channel
| Option | Best for | What the documented workflow supports | Computer dependence and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. StreamNeo | A straightforward always-on loop of uploaded videos | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, supports playlists and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and preserves the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. | Your computer does not need to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. One slot is one always-on stream; each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. |
| 2. Upstream | Cloud streaming with scheduled starts | Its product page describes uploading videos for cloud streaming, scheduling a broadcast to start automatically, backup ingest, and multistreaming. | The page says the stream can run while your computer is off. Its displayed price and free monthly streaming allowance are volatile; check the current plan before choosing. These are vendor statements, not independent service benchmarks. |
| 3. playout.video | Cloud 24/7 channels, playlists, or scheduled playout | Its site documents playlists, scheduling, auto-start, and fallback features, as well as a browser-based Live Studio. | The always-on channel is described as independent of your computer. Check current feature and plan details with the vendor; published descriptions do not establish comparative reliability. |
| 4. Gyre | A cloud tool listed in YouTube’s verified encoder directory | YouTube’s directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. | The directory listing establishes verified-encoder status, not comparative reliability, budget fit, or suitability for a particular channel. |
| 5. OBS Studio | Free local control over an encoder workflow | OBS is free and open source under GPLv2, according to the OBS Project. It can connect to YouTube using the live server URL and stream key. | A local setup relies on the computer and network staying available. OBS is an encoder, not a cloud playout service that keeps running after you turn your computer off. |
If you specifically want a physical appliance, YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream as a way to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The available information does not establish its price or whether it is affordable for a small channel.

What to compare before paying
A feature list is less useful than checking whether the service fits your actual publishing routine. Confirm these points on the current product page or with the provider before committing:
- Playlist behavior: Can you loop a single recording, rotate several videos, and control their order?
- Scheduling: Can it start a broadcast at a set time, or does it only keep a channel continuously live?
- Computer dependence: Does the service play from the cloud, or does your own computer have to encode and send the stream?
- Recovery: What happens if YouTube disconnects the stream or your local internet connection drops? Do not treat an advertised fallback as a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Production needs: If your show needs guests, live cameras, scene changes, or screen sharing, verify those capabilities rather than assuming a playlist tool provides them.
- Platform and stream count: Check which destinations are supported and how many streams or channels your plan covers.
- Full cost: Include the plan, any storage or stream limits, and the computer or network costs of a local setup. Vendor plan details can change.
- Rights and archives: Make sure you have rights for every playlist asset, and decide how you will keep replays independently of YouTube’s live archive.
How to run a prerecorded loop with OBS
OBS is the most direct free local option in this comparison, but the computer running it must remain on and connected for the broadcast to continue. The exact OBS menus may vary by version; the core YouTube setup is to provide the live server URL and stream key from YouTube to the encoder.

- FEATURE RICH: Includes 4-camera multiview; cut, mix, dip, wipe, and DVE transitions; luma, linear, chroma, and pattern upstream keys; downstream keyer; and a built-in 6-input, 2-channel audio mixer.
- APPLICATIONS: Multicamera live streaming to the Internet or broadcast applications. Perfect for education & training, business presentations, livestream eSport events and more.
- INPUTS: 4 x HDMI Type A (10-bit 4:2:2 YUV), 2-channel embedded audio; 2 x 3.5mm stereo analog audio; 1 x RJ45 Ethernet.
- OUTPUTS: 1 x HDMI Type A (10-bit 4:2:2 YUV) with 2-channel embedded audio; multiview output; 1 x USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 (for webcam output, panel connection, and external drive recording).
- INCLUDES: ATEM Mini Pro HDMI live stream switcher and external 12V DC power supply with international socket adapters.
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the scheduled start.
- Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live control room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open the stream settings, choose the YouTube service if offered, and enter the server URL and stream key. If you use a custom ingest setup, use the values YouTube provides rather than guessing them.
- Add your prerecorded video as a source. In the scene, add a Media Source and select the file. Enable looping if you want that clip to repeat. To rotate through several recordings, build and test a playlist workflow appropriate to your OBS setup before going live; OBS alone should not be mistaken for a cloud scheduler.
- Check the output before broadcasting. Confirm the video and audio play in the OBS preview, verify the chosen output settings are accepted by YouTube, and monitor the stream after starting it in OBS. The computer must stay awake, OBS must remain open, and the network must remain connected.
- Plan the replay separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a long continuous broadcast’s YouTube archive as your only replay or backup.
Local OBS failure checks
- YouTube does not accept the connection: Check that live streaming has been enabled, copy the current server URL and stream key from the correct YouTube broadcast, and confirm OBS is configured to use them.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS stream depends on the running computer and its network. Check power, sleep settings, software state, and internet availability; cloud playout avoids that specific local dependency.
- The video or sound is missing: Check that the media file is accessible, the correct source is visible in the active scene, and audio meters move in OBS before starting.
- A long stream has no replay: The archive may not be captured when a stream exceeds 12 hours. Keep an independent recording or other archive plan rather than assuming the live archive will exist.

YouTube rights and monetization still apply
Automation schedules and delivers a stream; it does not make the underlying video original or clear its rights. YouTube’s Livestream terms say, “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” You remain responsible for necessary rights to everything you stream, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a stream may be interrupted or terminated if identified material remains. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the owner.
Monetization is a separate question from whether a playout tool works. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible under its “inauthentic content” policy. Its reused-content policy requires significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value for reused material. A loop or automated schedule does not itself satisfy those standards.

- Highly compatible live streaming methods: Up to 3 streaming platforms at one time. Streaming directly via Ethernet or Smart Phone hotspot(via USB cable). Or you can connect to all streaming software, like OBS, Vmix to streaming.

Cost and practical trade-offs
OBS has no software purchase price according to the OBS Project, but you supply and operate the local computer and connection. Cloud services shift the playout work off your computer and charge according to their current plans and limits. Upstream’s product page displayed $30/month for one stream and a free monthly streaming allowance when checked; both are vendor-displayed details that can change, not independent benchmarks. Check current plan terms for every provider before making a decision.
For StreamNeo, the plan length changes while the product remains the same across plans. Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. Useful checks before your first broadcast
- Estimate upload time before transferring large video files.
- Compare cloud and PC costs using your own usage assumptions.
- Review YouTube’s live-stream terms, copyright requirements, and monetization policies before scheduling a playlist, especially when it includes music or material you did not create.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a prerecorded YouTube stream run while my computer is off?
Yes, with a cloud playout service; a locally run OBS broadcast depends on the computer and connection.
Does YouTube’s verified encoder listing prove that a service is the most reliable?
No. Directory inclusion establishes verified-encoder status, not comparative reliability or suitability for your channel.
Will looping prerecorded content automatically qualify a channel for monetization?
No. YouTube’s inauthentic- and reused-content policies apply independently of the playout software.
