Best Audio Level for a 24/7 Rain Sounds Stream on YouTube

A practical starting point for rain-stream loudness is -14 LUFS integrated. Measure the outgoing feed, check peaks, and test how it sounds on everyday devices.

Start near -14 LUFS integrated, then measure and listen to the actual stream output. That is a practical starting point—not an official YouTube loudness requirement. YouTube’s creator guidance emphasizes representative testing and stream health, while its encoding guidance specifies formats and settings rather than a LUFS target (live encoder guidance; upload encoding guidance).

What level should a rain stream use?

Aim initially for about -14 LUFS integrated across a representative section of the program. StreamNeo recommends this as a practical target for 24/7 stream audio, but it is not a YouTube specification (StreamNeo’s 24/7 audio settings guide).

Use the figure as a reference, not a promise that every listener will perceive the stream at the same volume. Rain is often played quietly as sleep or background ambience, so prioritize a steady, natural sound over aggressive processing to hit a number.

What LUFS measures—and what it does not

LUFS describes digital program loudness relative to full scale; it is not the sound pressure level in a listener’s room. Integrated Loudness uses frequency weighting and gating over time, making it more useful for assessing perceived program loudness than a peak reading alone. The Audio Engineering Society explains this distinction in its internet audio loudness recommendations.

  • Integrated loudness helps describe the overall level across a stretch of audio, including quieter and louder passages.
  • Peak level helps reveal brief high points and clipping risk. A safe peak does not by itself mean the overall stream sounds suitably loud.

The AES document recommends keeping Integrated Loudness above -20 LUFS so vulnerable players are less likely to sound too quiet at maximum gain, with exceptions for wide-dynamic-range material. That is AES guidance, not a YouTube rule or a rain-stream target.

How to set and check the level

  1. Choose representative audio. Include ordinary rain, the loudest moments, loop points, transitions, and any thunder or changes in intensity. A quiet, uniform stretch alone may not reveal the program’s full range.
  2. Measure the outgoing signal. Use an audio meter on the encoder output or a representative capture of the live feed. A source-file measurement may not match what is actually sent after playback, gain, or processing. StreamNeo’s guide describes inspecting a captured output or using FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter in measurement-only mode.
  3. Use approximately -14 LUFS integrated as a first reference. If your measurement is substantially quieter, adjust gain cautiously and recheck peaks. Do not rely on YouTube to raise a quiet source; the reviewed official guidance does not specify that it will do so.
  4. Listen at normal settings. Check the stream on a phone speaker, headphones, and a typical home speaker. Listen for comfort, audible distortion, abrupt changes between loops, and whether the ambience remains natural at the volume people are likely to use.
  5. Run a representative live test. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health (YouTube live encoder settings).

Keep the rain natural rather than chasing loudness

Raising a program’s level can require peak limiting. The AES notes that limiting may alter the sound. For rain ambience, listen for flattened transients, pumping, or a harsh, unnaturally dense texture; back off processing if the level target damages the sound. Avoid clipping, but do not treat an exact peak ceiling as a YouTube requirement: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not give one for this purpose.

Why viewers may hear a different level

Playback conditions vary. YouTube documents Stable volume, which is on by default for videos where available and balances quiet and loud portions; viewers can toggle it where available. YouTube also says some audio enhancements are applied selectively and that creators can manage enhancement defaults for future uploads (video and audio quality enhancements). These features are another reason to judge the feed on real devices rather than assuming a single LUFS figure determines every listener’s experience.

Audio format settings are separate from loudness

Do not confuse codec and sample-rate settings with a loudness target. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio and a 48 kHz sample rate. Its live encoder guidance names AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Those are technical encoding details; neither page establishes a recommended LUFS value for rain streams.
