YouTube also accepts MP3 over those protocols, but its published guidance does not establish that AAC sounds better for ambience. This is a compatibility-focused default, not the result of a rain-and-birdsong codec test.
Recommended YouTube Live audio settings
- Codec: AAC
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz
- Bitrate: 128 kbps
- Channels: Stereo
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio formats for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. It then transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so the creator’s priority is a compatible, stable feed rather than supplying a separate codec for every viewer’s device. AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live ambience?
Both AAC and MP3 are supported over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s published settings do not say that AAC is audibly superior for rain or birdsong, nor do they provide a genre-specific listening test. Choose AAC as a straightforward default when your encoder offers it; MP3 is also within YouTube’s stated support if your workflow requires it. The recommendation is about platform compatibility, not a claim about perceived sound quality.

RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS
| Ingest protocol | Audio formats listed by YouTube | Stereo guidance | Relevant note |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | For 5.1 surround, YouTube supports AAC only and recommends 48 kHz at 384 kbps. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | HLS has higher latency because it sends segments. |
For ordinary stereo nature ambience, RTMP/RTMPS with AAC is a practical default. If your encoder or production workflow calls for HLS, AAC is supported there too. YouTube’s guidance does not identify a protocol or codec specifically for 24/7 ambience; choose based on encoder support and your other production requirements. Details: YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Keep the audio stream stable
Test the actual kind of content
Before starting the broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any messages it reports. A quiet, continuous ambience source is still worth checking in the real encoding setup; a codec setting alone cannot confirm that the full feed is working correctly. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring.
Leave bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate of the stream. Network interruptions can break delivery, so this margin is relevant to a long-running broadcast as well as to a short test. It is a network recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Enable live streaming ahead of time
If this is the first live stream on a channel, YouTube says initial live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. Complete that step before the planned start rather than assuming activation is immediate. YouTube explains encoder-based streaming in its setup guidance.

The audio format determines how your encoder sends sound to YouTube; it does not by itself ensure a 24/7 broadcast stays online. Long-run delivery also depends on the encoder and connection remaining available, and YouTube advises testing and watching stream health. The cited guidance does not prescribe a special 24/7 audio codec or provide a complete failover plan.
