For a stereo YouTube Live stream, start with 128 Kbps AAC, YouTube’s published stereo audio bitrate. Twitch lists 160 kbps AAC as a maximum, not a target you must reach. If you need one stereo setting for both services, 128 Kbps AAC is a practical common choice based on those separate specifications; confirm how your encoder applies it to each destination.
Recommended audio bitrate by platform
| Platform | Codec guidance | Stereo bitrate | Sample rate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live | AAC or MP3; AAC is required for the RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 option | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 | 128 Kbps is YouTube’s listed stereo setting. YouTube Help: live encoder settings |
| Twitch | AAC | Up to 160 kbps | Twitch says AAC sampling frequency may be any value | 160 kbps is a maximum, not a recommendation to always select the ceiling. Twitch broadcasting guidelines |
Choose a setting for your stream
Streaming stereo on YouTube
Set the audio encoder to AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. YouTube also lists MP3 as an accepted codec, but its published stereo bitrate is 128 Kbps; use AAC if you want the same codec for a shared YouTube-and-Twitch setup.

Streaming stereo on Twitch
Use AAC at or below Twitch’s published 160 kbps maximum. The guidance establishes a ceiling, not a minimum or a claim that 160 kbps will sound better in every stream. Choose a value your encoder and workflow support, and check the destination’s current specifications.
Sending stereo to both YouTube and Twitch
128 Kbps AAC stereo is a reasonable shared setting: it matches YouTube’s listed stereo bitrate and stays below Twitch’s AAC maximum. This is an inference from the services’ separate guidance, not a universal standard. If your multistream encoder has per-destination audio settings, verify the value being sent to each service.

Stereo and 5.1 are different configurations
YouTube’s guidance distinguishes channel layouts: it lists 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz for stereo and 384 Kbps at 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance requires AAC for 5.1. Do not apply the stereo setting to a 5.1 workflow without checking the encoder and YouTube’s requirements.
Bitrate is only one part of audio quality
Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio data sent per second; codec and channel layout also matter. These platform specifications tell you which settings are supported or listed, but they do not establish that raising bitrate beyond a platform’s guidance will make the sound perceptibly better. The microphone or interface affects the signal captured before encoding, but neither platform’s cited guidance requires new hardware just to select an audio bitrate.

Test the audio before going live
- Set the destination, codec, channel layout, bitrate, and sample rate in your encoder. Match the YouTube values to stereo or 5.1 as applicable; for Twitch, keep AAC at or below its listed maximum.
- Run a test with representative speech, music, and other audio that will actually be part of the event. YouTube advises testing representative audio and video before a live stream.
- Listen to the test from a separate playback device and check that the audio is present and balanced. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended channel layout and destination-specific bitrate.
- Monitor YouTube stream health during the event and respond to any warnings rather than assuming that a selected bitrate guarantees a clean feed.
