For a new ARK: Survival Ascended server in 2026, start with one building mod, one dino-information tool and one storage or quality-of-life mod. Structures Plus (S+) is the safest general building choice; Super Spyglass Plus or Awesome SpyGlass solves stat-checking; Dino Storage handles tame storage; and Automatic Ark adds crafting and inventory automation. Add either a creature pack or one overhaul—not several overhauls together. ASA mods are delivered through CurseForge, and connected players normally download the server’s enabled mods automatically.
The 2026 shortlist at a glance
The list below reflects repeated recommendations in recent community guides, not an official ranking from Studio Wildcard. Mod pages, IDs and compatibility can change, so verify each item’s current CurseForge page immediately before deployment.

| Mod or category | Primary problem solved | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structures Plus (S+) | More flexible building and construction management | Most PvE, building-focused and mixed servers | Large building systems can add complexity and may require player retraining |
| Castles, Keeps and Forts (Remastered) | Medieval-style construction pieces | Role-play, themed and castle-building servers | Specialized; it does not replace a general building overhaul for every play style |
| Super Spyglass Plus or Awesome SpyGlass | Inspecting wild-dino statistics before taming | Breeding and taming communities | Information-rich tools can reduce the uncertainty that is part of the base game |
| Dino Storage | Storing tames in soul balls instead of leaving them in the world | Servers with many creatures, breeders or compact bases | Community lists disagree on the current ASA release line (v2 versus v3); confirm the page and migration notes |
| Automatic Ark | Automatic crafting and storage handling | Established servers that want less manual inventory work | Background automation can increase server load |
| Additional Creatures 2 or Ark Additions | New creature content | Players who want more taming and breeding targets | More creatures mean more balance, spawn and update questions |
| Primal Chaos, Ark Supreme or Astraeos | Large-scale progression and gameplay changes | Servers designed around an overhaul | Overhauls can conflict with each other and with lighter progression mods |
How to choose a stable mod stack
Begin with the server’s purpose
Decide what experience the server is supposed to deliver before downloading anything. A construction server needs building pieces and better placement controls. A breeding server benefits from clear dino-stat inspection and compact tame storage. A role-play server may prioritize Castles, Keeps and Forts (Remastered). A progression server may be built around one overhaul. Combining every category because each mod looks useful creates a different problem: more patches to track, more possible conflicts and a harder diagnosis when the server fails to start.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use one overhaul at most
Primal Chaos, Ark Supreme and Astraeos are alternatives, not a recommended bundle. Each overhaul can alter progression, creatures, items or balance assumptions. Pick the one whose design matches your rules, then add only a small number of clearly compatible utility mods. If you stack multiple overhauls, a crash or missing engram can be difficult to attribute to one package.

Separate information tools from automation
A spyglass mod generally changes what a player can see. Automatic Ark changes what the server is doing in the background by handling crafting and storage tasks. Treat those as different operational decisions. Information tools are usually easier to introduce to an existing world; automation should be tested with realistic inventories and player activity before a public launch.
Check the ASA release, not an old ASE tutorial
ARK: Survival Evolved guides often describe Steam Workshop subscriptions, Workshop IDs and manual ActiveMods edits. Those instructions belong to the older distribution model. Current ASA community guides describe CurseForge delivery instead: the server specifies numeric CurseForge mod IDs and a connecting client downloads the required content. A guide that predates ASA can therefore point you to the wrong folder, command or subscription workflow.
What each recommended mod is for
Structures Plus (S+)
S+ is the broadest recommendation for a general-purpose ASA server. It targets the friction of the base construction system: building flexibility, organization and management of structures. It is a sensible first choice when the server must support builders without committing to a total gameplay overhaul. Before enabling it, decide whether your community wants its additional conveniences everywhere or only in designated building areas. Publish the server’s building rules so players know which pieces and functions are available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Castles, Keeps and Forts (Remastered)
This is a themed construction package rather than a universal replacement for every building need. It fits medieval settlements, fortification projects and role-play maps. Use it when the visual identity of the server matters as much as construction efficiency. If players also need general-purpose building improvements, test the package with S+ on a private copy; do not assume that two building systems share every snap point or structure rule.
Super Spyglass Plus and Awesome SpyGlass
These mods address the same broad decision: whether a wild creature is worth taming. Stat visibility helps breeders identify candidates before spending narcotics, food and time. Because the two tools overlap, choose one after comparing its current ASA update date, configuration options and user interface. Installing both rarely improves the decision enough to justify duplicate overlays or conflicting key bindings.
Dino Storage
Dino Storage puts tames into soul balls, allowing a server to keep large collections without leaving every creature physically loaded at a base. That can simplify breeding areas, transport and organization. Current community lists disagree about whether v2 or v3 is the appropriate ASA recommendation, so the version number should not be copied from an old list. Read the current CurseForge description, changelog and upgrade instructions, and test retrieving a tame before migrating an established population.
Automatic Ark
Automatic Ark focuses on auto-crafting and storage management. It can remove repetitive inventory work on a mature server, but the convenience is not free: automation performs ongoing background tasks. Start with conservative settings and watch CPU time, memory use, save duration and log output during peak activity. If performance declines, reduce the number of automated stations or disable features rather than adding more performance-sensitive mods.

Additional Creatures 2 and Ark Additions
Creature packs are a middle ground between vanilla play and a full overhaul. They add new taming and breeding goals while leaving more of the familiar progression intact. Select one pack first. Confirm how it handles spawn distribution, breeding, saddle availability and removal from an existing save. A creature pack can be attractive to a new season but disruptive if removed after players have bred or stored its creatures.
Primal Chaos, Ark Supreme and Astraeos
An overhaul should define the server’s identity, not sit unnoticed among utility mods. Write down the intended progression, wipe policy and balance expectations before launch. Then check every utility mod against the overhaul’s current compatibility notes. Avoid promising that a particular item, creature or recipe will behave like vanilla; the purpose of an overhaul is to change those assumptions.
How ASA server mod delivery works in 2026
For ASA, recent guides describe CurseForge as the mod distribution route. The server advertises its enabled numeric mod IDs. When a player connects, the client normally downloads the required files automatically, so players do not need to subscribe in a Workshop client or copy files by hand. The exact download time depends on the mod sizes and the player’s connection.
This is different from older ARK: Survival Evolved instructions that rely on Steam Workshop IDs and an ActiveMods entry copied from Workshop content. Treat any tutorial that uses only that older workflow as potentially stale. The server build, the mod’s ASA release and the client’s downloaded version must all line up.

Install an ASA dedicated server with SteamCMD
The following procedure uses the app IDs reported by current community setup guides. The dedicated server is a separate free Steam app from the game client. The guides identify 2430930 as the dedicated-server app and 2399830 as the client app. Because these IDs are reported by third-party guides rather than an official Studio Wildcard reference, verify them against the platform’s current listing if SteamCMD returns an app error.
Godlike.Host offers ARK: Survival Ascended server hosting through its own game panel, with SFTP/FTP access. That is an alternative to installing the dedicated server with SteamCMD: ARK: Survival Ascended server hosting.
- Install SteamCMD on the machine that will host the server and create a dedicated installation directory with enough room for the server, maps, mod downloads, updates and backups.
- Run the reported first-install command, replacing the path with your own directory:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <path> +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quit - Use
validatefor the first installation or after suspected file damage. It checks files but slows routine updates, so it is not necessary for every normal update. - Start the server once without changing a large number of settings. Let it create its configuration files and confirm that it can reach the main menu or listen for connections.
- Stop the process cleanly before editing configuration files. Keep a copy of the original files so a bad setting can be removed quickly.
Configure GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini
ASA server options are split between GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini. The first commonly contains user-facing and server-session settings; the second is used for many gameplay and spawning rules. The exact path depends on the hosting layout, so follow the directory created by your server package rather than copying an ARK: Survival Evolved path blindly.

- Stop the server before editing either file.
- Make one change at a time and keep a dated backup.
- Use plain text editors that do not add rich-text formatting.
- Check capitalization, equals signs and section headers when a setting appears to be ignored.
- Restart and inspect the startup log after each meaningful change.
Do not paste a complete configuration from an unrelated server. A file can contain map-specific, mod-specific or obsolete keys that produce confusing results on ASA.
Add CurseForge mod IDs to the launch command
Current setup guides disagree about whether the launch argument alone is sufficient, whether ActiveMods must also be present, or whether both should be set. The most consistent practical approach is to put the comma-separated numeric IDs in the launch command first, start the server, and then test whether your hosting environment also requires an ActiveMods line.
Use the launch argument first
Add the IDs to the server’s startup command in the documented format:
-mods=ID1,ID2,ID3
Replace each placeholder with the current numeric ID shown on the mod’s CurseForge page. Keep the list comma-separated and do not add a mod name where the server expects a number. Put the launch argument in the same startup script or service definition that already supplies the map and server options.
Test ActiveMods only when needed
Some guides use the same comma-separated format in an ActiveMods setting in GameUserSettings.ini. Because behavior is not confirmed by an official source and can vary by server build or host wrapper, do not assume that duplicating the list is universally required. Start with -mods, check the log, and add the configuration entry only if your version fails to load the IDs without it.

Quote IDs in a Windows batch file when required
A community forum report says a Windows batch file may need quotation marks around the complete list, for example:
-mods="900062,926956,927131"
Use the quoting style required by your batch-file parser. If the log shows that the argument was split or ignored, inspect the final command line rather than changing mod files at random.

First startup and verification checklist
- Save the mod list and the exact IDs in a text file with the date and server build.
- Start the server and allow its first mod download to finish before inviting players.
- Read the startup log for each requested ID, download errors, missing dependencies and load-order warnings.
- Join with a test account and verify that the mod appears in the in-game mod or content interface.
- Place one structure, inspect one wild creature and store and retrieve one tame, depending on which features you installed.
- Restart the server and repeat the basic checks. A mod that works only until the first restart is not ready for production.
- Back up the save after the clean test and before adding a second mod.
Load order, updates and save safety
Add one mod at a time
Install the base server first, then add a single mod and test it. Repeat for the next mod. If three packages are added simultaneously and the server crashes, the only reliable fix is to remove or disable them in combinations until the cause is isolated. One-at-a-time changes take longer initially but preserve a usable diagnosis.
Record versions and dates
CurseForge pages and IDs change. Record the page’s displayed version or update date, the ID, the ASA server build and the date of your backup. When a mod updates, read its changelog before restarting the live server. A compatibility change can affect structures, creatures, inventories or saved data even when the server starts normally.
Back up before updates and removals
Removing a mod can delete or strand structures, items, creatures or recipes that depend on it. An update can also change serialization. Stop the server, copy the save and configuration directories, then test the update on a staging copy. Keep the previous files available until players have confirmed that their bases and tames load correctly.
Keep a rollback plan
A rollback is easier when you have the previous server build, mod files or a documented download source, configuration backups and a known-good save. Do not overwrite the only backup with a post-update save. If the server crashes after an update, restore the pre-update save and configuration before experimenting with further changes.
Performance and capacity decisions
There is no verified, universal RAM or storage figure in the available guidance that can be safely applied to every ASA server. Player count, map, view distance, save frequency, mod size and automation behavior all affect the result. Treat hardware claims in generic “best settings” posts as estimates unless the author identifies the test conditions and server build.
Watch the right signals
- CPU utilization and sustained single-thread pressure during peak activity.
- Memory usage after several hours, not only immediately after startup.
- Save duration and whether saves overlap with lag spikes.
- Disk space consumed by maps, mod downloads, logs, backups and update copies.
- Connection time for a fresh client downloading the complete mod set.
Automation needs special testing
Automatic Ark can perform repeated crafting and storage work even when players are not actively using a station. Test with representative inventories and the maximum number of automated devices you intend to allow. If the server becomes unstable, reduce automation scope before blaming every mod in the stack.

Common failures and practical fixes
The server starts but no mod appears
- Confirm that the IDs are numeric CurseForge IDs, not names or old Steam Workshop IDs.
- Check the complete startup command for a missing
-mods=prefix or a malformed comma list. - Read the log for download or permission errors.
- Restart after the initial download and test whether your host requires
ActiveModsas well.
A Windows batch file ignores the list
Inspect how the shell parsed commas and quotation marks. Try the quoted form reported by community guidance, then confirm in the server log that the entire list arrived as one argument.
The server crashes after adding a mod
- Stop the server and preserve the log.
- Remove only the newest mod from the launch list.
- Start with the last known-good save and verify whether the crash disappears.
- Read the mod’s current ASA notes for dependencies or a required version.
- If the mod is needed, test it alone on a copy of the server before reintroducing other packages.
Players are stuck downloading or connecting
Check whether the server finished downloading its own mod files and whether the client is receiving the same ID list. A large or recently updated mod can extend the first connection. Compare the server build and mod update date, then remove one recently changed package if the problem began immediately after an update.
A removed mod leaves missing content
Restore the pre-removal backup. Do not continue saving the world while dependent structures or creatures are missing. Decide whether to reinstall the mod, replace affected content deliberately, or roll back the season; make that decision before creating a new backup over the damaged state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTwo mods fight over the same feature
Overlapping building systems, spyglasses or progression overhauls can provide duplicate engrams, key bindings or edits to the same assets. Disable one overlapping package and test again. Prefer one clear solution per feature unless both authors document compatibility.
Recommended starter stacks
Low-risk quality-of-life stack
- Structures Plus (S+)
- One of Super Spyglass Plus or Awesome SpyGlass
- Dino Storage after confirming the current ASA version
This combination addresses construction, taming decisions and tame organization without changing the entire progression model.
Role-play building stack
- Castles, Keeps and Forts (Remastered)
- One spyglass tool if breeding remains important
- Dino Storage only after testing how soul-ball storage fits the server’s rules
Use this profile when visual theme and settlement building matter more than maximum automation.
Creature-focused stack
- One creature pack: Additional Creatures 2 or Ark Additions
- One spyglass tool
- Dino Storage if the server will support extensive breeding
Test spawn distribution and creature removal procedures before opening the server publicly.
Overhaul stack
- Exactly one of Primal Chaos, Ark Supreme or Astraeos
- Only utility mods confirmed to work with that overhaul
Build the rules, progression guide and backup plan around the overhaul rather than treating it as another interchangeable add-on.
Questions to answer before inviting players
- Which map and ASA server build are running?
- Which exact CurseForge IDs and versions are enabled?
- Will players download mods automatically on first connection, and how large is that download?
- What happens to bases, creatures and items if a mod is removed?
- Who approves updates, and how often are backups made?
- Is automation allowed everywhere, and what performance threshold triggers a rollback?
Publish these answers with the server’s connection instructions. Clear rules prevent players from building around a feature that may later be removed and make troubleshooting much faster.
Final recommendation
For most new ASA servers, install S+, choose one of the two major spyglass tools, and add Dino Storage only after checking whether the current release is v2 or v3. Add Automatic Ark when you have measured the server’s baseline and are willing to monitor automation load. Choose either a creature pack or a single overhaul for the server’s theme; do not combine multiple overhauls. Use CurseForge IDs in the startup command, test ActiveMods only if your build needs it, and keep a tested backup before every update or removal.
