To use an old phone as a security camera, install a camera-monitoring app on it and pair it with a second device that you can use to watch the live feed. AlfredCamera is a straightforward starting point; AtHome is another option with a separate camera-streamer app and viewer app. First check that both phones meet the apps’ requirements, then review how each handles alerts, recordings, cloud storage, and privacy.
Which app should you choose?
Neither option has been independently tested here, so there is no verified performance ranking. Compare the apps against your old phone’s compatibility, the controls and alerts you want, local availability and pricing, and the way video is stored.

Choose AlfredCamera if
- You want to use one app on both the camera phone and the viewing device.
- Your old phone and viewer meet Alfred’s separate minimum operating-system requirements.
- The listed features, subscription terms, and storage disclosures suit your needs.
Choose AtHome if
- You are comfortable installing a streamer app on the camera phone and a separate viewer app on the other device.
- Features listed by AtHome, such as privacy masking or scheduled recording, are important to your setup.
- You have checked compatibility, current regional costs, recording limits, and privacy disclosures in the relevant stores.
What you need before setup
- Two compatible devices: one phone to stream video and another device to view it remotely. Check the current app-store listing for the old phone; Alfred’s published minimums differ between camera and viewer roles.
- A reliable place for the camera phone: it needs a clear view of the area you want to monitor. An adjustable phone mount or clamp can help aim it, but it is optional and not an app requirement.
- Power and a suitable network: plan to keep the camera phone connected to power and Wi-Fi where the setup requires them. Continuous operation during outages or operating-system interruptions is not established, so do not treat the arrangement as guaranteed uninterrupted monitoring.
- Access to the relevant settings: be ready to review camera, microphone, notification, account, cloud-storage, and data-safety settings.
How to set up an old phone as a camera
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the old phone can install and run the camera app, and check that the viewer device meets its own requirements. For Alfred, the support page lists Android 5.0+ or iOS 12+ for camera devices and Android 7.0+ or iOS 15+ for viewers. See Alfred’s device requirements.
- Install the right apps. For Alfred, install AlfredCamera on both devices. For AtHome, install AtHome Video Streamer on the old phone and AtHome Camera on the viewer.
- Assign the device roles and pair them. Set the old phone as the camera or streamer and the second device as the viewer. Follow the app’s pairing flow; Alfred’s listing describes QR-code pairing.
- Position and secure the old phone. Aim its camera at the intended area and place it where it is unlikely to be knocked over. Use an optional adjustable mount if that makes positioning easier.
- Review permissions and storage choices. Check what access the app requests, how alerts are delivered, whether recordings go to cloud storage, and what the current store privacy panel says. A vendor statement or app-store disclosure is not an independent security guarantee.
- Test the complete arrangement where you plan to use it. Check remote viewing, the alerts and playback you expect, and what happens when power or network conditions change. These behaviors can depend on the device, connection, and app; they have not been independently tested here.
What to expect from an old-phone camera
The phone-and-app combination can provide a remote video feed and, depending on the app and its current plan, features such as motion-related alerts or event recordings. A feature appearing in an app listing does not establish its accuracy or reliability in your home. Test the exact alerts, playback, and viewing behavior you intend to depend on.
For storage, distinguish local viewing from cloud handling. Alfred’s support page says Premium Activity Detection videos are stored with Amazon. AtHome lists cloud upload of alarm video. Check each service’s current terms and privacy disclosures before placing a camera in a sensitive area.
