Save frequent places and search nearby
Save your home, work, or school address to make common trips quicker to start. In Maps, search for the address, open its place card, and use the option to add it to the relevant personal place or contact details; the exact controls can vary by iOS version.

For nearby services, search by name or choose a category such as restaurants or grocery stores. You can also phrase a search as a task. Apple’s examples include “Find cafes with free Wi-Fi”, “Find a charging station”, and “Give me directions home.” These are examples from Apple’s Maps guide, not evidence about how commonly people search.
Choose a map view that helps you orient
Maps offers Explore, Driving, Transit, and Satellite views. Switch views based on what you need: Explore for a general look at an area, Driving or Transit for travel context, and Satellite for a photographic view. Apple also supports 3D exploration and Look Around, which provides 360-degree panoramas in supported places. Coverage and available views vary by location.

Compare routes and set preferences
Apple Maps provides driving, walking, transit, and cycling directions. Compare the estimated time and distance for the options shown, then consider whether the route suits your mode and preferences. There is no universally best route: options and estimated results depend on the trip and regional availability.
- Driving: Depending on the route and settings, you can plan around an arrival time.
- Cycling or walking: Available preferences may include avoiding hills or heavy traffic.
- Transit: Where supported, choose among available transit methods.
To start, search for a destination, tap Directions, choose the travel mode, and review the suggested routes and preferences before starting navigation. Apple’s available route settings differ by mode and location.

Add a stop to a trip
When you need to visit somewhere along the way, add it as a stop instead of treating it as a separate destination. Start directions to your main destination, then use the option to add a stop and search for the place you want to visit. Review the revised route and timing before you begin; the controls can differ by device and software version.

Download an offline map before losing signal
For supported areas, downloaded maps can provide place information, including opening hours and ratings, plus turn-by-turn directions and estimated arrival times without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Offline coverage is not available everywhere, and a downloaded map uses device storage. Apple shows the download size before you save it.

- On iPhone, open Maps and search for the area you expect to visit.
- Open the area or place card and choose the download option, then adjust the map boundary to cover your route and likely detours.
- Check the displayed file size and download while you still have a reliable connection.
- In Maps’ offline maps controls, resize, update, or delete downloads when plans change or storage is tight.
Apple’s guide says accurate directions require an internet connection and Precise Location. Downloading an offline map can help when connectivity is lost, but it does not make map coverage universal. Apple advises downloading before the connection disappears; it also suggests sending yourself a list of upcoming directions if you expect to lose service.
Use Maps with CarPlay, Mac, and Apple Watch
- CarPlay: Get directions in Maps through your vehicle’s CarPlay interface. Use the car display and controls available in your vehicle rather than assuming every iPhone control appears there.
- Mac: Plan a route in Maps on Mac and send it to your iPhone to continue on the go.
- Apple Watch: Maps supports driving, walking, transit, and cycling directions on Apple Watch. Apple also documents syncing downloaded offline maps with Apple Watch; that specific workflow should not be read as a promise that offline downloads sync generally across all devices.
Check location settings and manage recent activity
Precise Location matters for accurate directions, and Maps also needs an internet connection for accurate directions according to Apple’s guidance. On iPhone, review the Maps and Location Services controls in Settings if directions or location results are not behaving as expected. Apple’s setup documentation also describes controls for clearing location history and deleting recent directions. Available settings labels and paths can change between iOS versions, so use Settings search if a label differs on your device.
