For a first Apple Home setup, start with a smart plug if you want to control a plug-in lamp, or a smart bulb if you want to change the light itself. Add a sensor only when you have a clear use for it; consider a lock or thermostat after checking installation and home compatibility. Apple’s catalog lists examples in each category, but it does not rank them or establish which is best for your home.
What to check before buying for Apple Home
Apple Home works with supported HomeKit accessories and Matter accessories. Matter is an interoperability standard; Thread is a networking technology used by some devices. A Matter logo alone does not guarantee that every product feature will appear in Apple Home. Check the exact model, supported category, region and software requirements, and the capabilities exposed in Home.

Apple’s Works with Apple Home compatible accessories catalog lists examples including Eve Energy (Matter) smart plugs, Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 bulbs, Eve Door & Window and Eve Motion Matter sensors, selected Aqara and Yale locks, and ecobee and Aqara thermostats. These are category examples to investigate, not independently tested recommendations.

Start with a smart plug for a plug-in lamp
A smart plug is a straightforward first device when the goal is to switch a plug-in lamp or another suitable appliance on and off through Apple Home. Eve Energy (Matter) is one smart-plug example in Apple’s catalog; the catalog also identifies it as a power meter. That listing does not establish that its power-meter functions, or any other particular feature, will be available in every setup.

Before buying, check the plug’s exact Apple Home compatibility and the electrical rating against the appliance. A smart plug is not a way to make every appliance smart: consider how the appliance behaves when power is cut and restored, and do not exceed the plug’s stated load limits. For a simple first search, “Matter smart plug for Apple Home” describes the category without implying a tested winner.
Choose a smart bulb when you want to change the light
A smart bulb is a better fit when you want Apple Home to control the bulb itself rather than simply cut power to a lamp. Apple’s catalog lists Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 as a Matter- and Thread-enabled bulb. Treat it as an example to check, not a universal fit: confirm the bulb base, fixture, brightness and any lighting features you want, along with exact Apple Home support.

Consider how the wall switch will be used. If someone turns off power to the bulb at the switch, the bulb may no longer be reachable for smart control until power is restored. Check the product’s current instructions for its setup and controls before choosing it.
Add sensors for a specific task
Sensors can make sense once you know what you want to detect or automate. Apple’s supported Matter categories include contact, motion, air-quality, ambient-light, humidity and temperature sensors. Its catalog lists Eve Door & Window and Eve Motion Matter as examples. Category support does not promise that every sensor reading, automation option or vendor-specific capability will be available in Apple Home; verify the exact model.

Take more care with locks and thermostats
A smart lock or thermostat can address a useful, specific need, but each has more compatibility questions than a first plug or bulb. Apple’s catalog includes selected Aqara and Yale locks and ecobee and Aqara thermostat products; those brand examples do not establish that every model works with Apple Home or fits every home.
Before choosing a lock
- Check the exact lock model’s Apple Home support and the functions exposed in Home.
- Confirm compatibility with your door, deadbolt and existing hardware, plus any installation requirements.
- Check whether setup or a key capability depends on a manufacturer app, hub or bridge.
Before choosing a thermostat
- Confirm the thermostat supports your HVAC system and installation setup.
- Verify the exact model and which controls or readings Apple Home makes available.
- Check for any required hub, bridge, manufacturer app or other equipment.
Know when a home hub or Thread border router is needed
Some accessories use Thread, a low-power IP-based mesh network. Thread-enabled accessories can forward packets to one another, which can improve network coverage and redundancy, according to Apple’s developer documentation. Apple Support says a Thread-based accessory requires a Thread-enabled home hub, such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router. Confirm the device and hub requirements for your exact setup before purchase; Matter support by itself does not mean a Thread hub is unnecessary.

Add an accessory in the Home app
- Power on the accessory and make sure it is connected to a network, as its instructions require.
- On iPhone, open the Home app and select Add Accessory.
- Scan the accessory’s QR code or enter its numeric setup code when prompted, then follow the on-screen steps.
- If the accessory was previously paired elsewhere, or its instructions call for it, complete any additional manufacturer-app setup.
Apple’s accessory setup instructions describe this Home app flow. Pairing steps can vary by product, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions as well. Apple says supported Matter accessories can be used through Home, Siri, Control Center and compatible third-party HomeKit apps; the controls available depend on the accessory and its implementation.
