Five products lead most 2026 antivirus shortlists: Bitdefender Total Security, Norton 360 Deluxe, McAfee+ Premium, F-Secure Total and Avast One. No independent lab ranks them one to five, though. Each is an editorial pick for a different kind of buyer. The most useful way to choose is to start with the devices you own, then confirm that the exact product and version you plan to buy performed well in a recent independent test.

Why this list is a set of editorial picks, not a lab ranking

The five products come from TechRadar’s 2026 roundup, which assigns each one to a specific need: Bitdefender Total Security as the overall pick, Norton 360 Deluxe for families, McAfee+ Premium for mobile devices, F-Secure Total for home Wi-Fi and smart devices, and Avast One as the free option. Tom’s Guide arrived at a different order. It names Norton 360 Deluxe as its overall choice, Malwarebytes Plus as the budget option, and Bitdefender Total Security for fraud protection.

The two outlets weight features and value differently, so the same product can lead one list and sit lower on another. Decide which criteria matter to you before you treat any ranking as an answer.

What the independent test results show

AV-TEST, July and August 2026 (Windows 11 home users)

AV-TEST evaluated 15 security products for Windows 11 home users in July and August 2026. It used default settings, the latest publicly available product versions, and realistic threat scenarios. Each product is scored across protection, performance and usability, with a maximum of 6 points per category. The lab’s TOP PRODUCT label is awarded at 17.5 of 18 points.

Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 6 / 6 / 6 Overall pick (TechRadar)
Norton 360 26.6 / 26.7 6 / 6 / 6 Norton 360 Deluxe, family pick (TechRadar); the lab listing does not state the edition tier
McAfee Total Protection 1.39 6 / 6 / 6 McAfee+ Premium (TechRadar); a different product name
Avast Free Antivirus 26.6 6 / 6 / 6 Avast One, free pick (TechRadar); a different product name
Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 6 / 5.5 / 6 Built-in comparison option
F-Secure Total Not stated Not stated Home Wi-Fi pick (TechRadar); no result in the AV-TEST summary used here

Several products besides those listed also earned 6 in every category, and ESET was among the strong performers. Because so many top scorers reach full marks, the lab score alone rarely separates them. Platform coverage, features and price usually decide the purchase.

AV-TEST, March and April 2026 overview

An earlier AV-TEST Windows 11 overview from March and April 2026 covered a separate round from the August results above. In that round, 12 of 14 tested consumer suites scored at least 17.5 of 18 points, and eight detected all of more than 12,000 malware samples. Ten of the 14 earned full marks for system load, and the other four scored 5.5 of 6 for performance. These figures describe that earlier line-up, not the August products.

AV-Comparatives, 2026

AV-Comparatives runs several tests that answer different questions, so their results should not be merged into one score. Its February to May 2026 real-world program assessed 20 home-user products. A separate March 2026 malware test evaluated consumer malware protection. Its July and August 2026 real-world factsheet covered a broad set of consumer products on updated Windows 11 Pro 64-bit. The comprehensive four-month reports, which include false-alarm tests and awards, are released in June and November. The next one is scheduled for November 2026.

The five picks and who each one suits

Bitdefender Total Security: broad all-round choice

TechRadar names Bitdefender Total Security its overall pick. In AV-TEST’s August round, version 27.0 scored 6 in all three categories. Tom’s Guide highlights protection against malware, ransomware and network threats, along with phishing and fraud-related extras. Before you buy, check the subscription length, the number of devices the plan covers, and which platforms each plan includes, since these vary by plan.

Norton 360 Deluxe: households and family controls

TechRadar recommends Norton 360 Deluxe for families, citing parental controls and cloud backup. Tom’s Guide makes it the overall choice. The AV-TEST listing shows Norton 360 at version 26.6 or 26.7 with 6 in every category, but it does not say which edition tier that corresponds to. Confirm that the plan you buy includes the family features you need, and compare the renewal price, not only the introductory one.

McAfee+ Premium: mobile and multi-device households

TechRadar points to McAfee+ Premium for easy-to-use mobile apps and broad device coverage. The lab result, however, is for McAfee Total Protection 1.39, which is a different product name. It scored 6 in every category, but that result describes the tested product, not necessarily each McAfee+ tier. Check the device limit and mobile coverage on the plan you are considering.

F-Secure Total: home Wi-Fi and connected devices

TechRadar positions F-Secure Total for home networks and smart devices. The AV-TEST summary used for this article does not include an F-Secure result, so no lab score here supports that recommendation. Judge its network and device features separately from malware scores. A strong protection result does not rule out a performance trade-off on a particular machine, and results can differ between products and between test rounds.

Avast One: free starting point

TechRadar lists Avast One as its free pick, with optional paid extras. The AV-TEST result covers Avast Free Antivirus 26.6, which scored 6 in every category in August. That result describes the free product, not the paid tiers of Avast One. Free covers the core protection; any upgrade is a separate purchase.

Is Microsoft Defender enough?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 scored 6 for protection, 5.5 for performance and 6 for usability in the same AV-TEST August round. For a Windows-only household that does not need extras, the built-in option is a credible baseline to measure paid suites against. A paid suite has to justify its cost through what the core score does not measure: macOS, Android or iOS coverage, parental controls, cloud backup, password management, or scam and network tools. If you need none of those, the built-in protection is a reasonable starting point. If you need some of them, let those features drive the purchase, not the lab score.

How to choose: a step-by-step check

  1. List every device and its operating system: Windows, macOS, Android or iOS. Feature availability and product versions can differ by platform, so a suite that scores well on Windows may cover fewer phones than your household uses.
  2. Decide which extras you will actually use, such as parental controls, backup, a password manager or a VPN. Treat them as separate from core malware protection.
  3. Find the exact product name and version in the lab result, then confirm the plan you can buy matches it. For example, in AV-TEST’s August round, the entry is “Bitdefender Total Security 27.0”, not simply “Bitdefender”.
  4. Check the price in your country: the introductory price, the renewal price, the device count and the term length. Prices, plan names and availability vary by region and change often, so confirm them on the vendor’s site at the moment of purchase.
  5. Look at false-alarm behaviour. If a product blocks an application you rely on, check whether the vendor provides a way to report it or create an exception before you commit to a long subscription.

Use the lab tables for the protection and performance question, and the editorial picks for the device and feature question. Keeping those two jobs separate makes the choice clearer than either source alone.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
