Best Android Video Players for MKV Files: VLC vs. MX Player

VLC is the stronger documented default for Android MKV playback; MX Player offers useful decoder and subtitle controls. Actual results depend on the file and device.

VLC is the better-supported starting point for most Android users playing MKV files because its official materials explicitly list MKV, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, network-share playback, and no separate codec downloads. MX Player is worth trying if you want decoder choices and detailed subtitle-appearance controls. Neither app can guarantee playback on every phone: MKV is a container, and the streams inside it must also be supported by the device and player.

VLC vs. MX Player for MKV files

What matters VLC for Android MX Player
MKV and format support Google Play explicitly lists MKV and says codecs are included without separate downloads. [Google Play listing] The reviewed official help explains playback and decoder behavior, but does not provide an equivalent format list establishing broad MKV support. [MX Player decoder help]
Audio and subtitle tracks VideoLAN lists selection of multiple audio and subtitle tracks, plus embedded and external subtitles, including ASS and DVD subtitles. [VideoLAN VLC for Android] Its help documents subtitle files and appearance controls; the reviewed material does not establish a comparative advantage in track support or subtitle quality. [MX Player subtitle help]
Decoder options Hardware decoding is available, but VideoLAN says it is not supported on every device; software decoding may be needed. [VideoLAN VLC for Android] Official help describes hardware, HW+, and software decoder choices. Results depend on the device, Android media framework, and file streams. [MX Player decoder help]
Network playback VideoLAN lists network streams, NAS, and shared-drive browsing. [VideoLAN VLC for Android] The reviewed support material does not establish equivalent network-share features.
Cost and ads Google Play describes VLC as free and ad-free. [Google Play listing] Current edition and pricing were not established by the reviewed official materials.

Why the MKV extension does not settle compatibility

MKV (Matroska) is a container: it can package video, audio, and subtitle streams in different formats. A player may open the container yet fail to decode a particular video profile, play an audio track, or render a subtitle correctly. Hardware decoding also depends on the phone’s chipset and Android media framework; MX Player’s help notes that even devices with similar specifications can behave differently. That is why neither app can be declared the performance winner for every handset from feature lists alone. A 10-bit video, unusual audio codec, styled subtitle, or high-resolution file is a useful case to test on the actual device.

When VLC is the stronger first choice

VLC is a practical default if you want an explicitly documented MKV option, included codecs, support for multiple audio and subtitle tracks, or playback from a NAS or shared drive. VideoLAN also lists HLS and DASH network streams, Android TV and Chromebook support, local media history, gestures, and an equalizer. Its Android page identified version 3.7.0 at the time reviewed; that is a version identifier, not a playback-performance measure. [VideoLAN VLC for Android]

MX Player’s help describes AC3, EAC3, and DTS as codecs not shipped in the referenced configuration and says a custom codec package may be possible. That troubleshooting note does not establish that every current build fails to play those codecs. The help also notes device-specific behavior and rendering caveats for SSA/ASS subtitles, so a styled subtitle may not look identical across devices or players. [Decoder help] [Subtitle help]

Fix common MKV playback problems

The video plays but there is no sound

  1. Check whether the file contains more than one audio track and select another track in the player.
  2. Identify the audio codec if the track remains silent. The MKV extension alone does not identify the codec or prove it is the problem.
  3. Try the same file in the other player. In MX Player, switch among the available hardware, HW+, and software decoder modes; in VLC, try software decoding if hardware decoding is unavailable or problematic. Menu labels can vary by app version and device. [MX Player decoder help] [VideoLAN VLC for Android]

Subtitles are missing or look wrong

  • Check whether subtitles are embedded in the MKV or supplied as a separate file, then select the intended subtitle track.
  • For an external subtitle in MX Player, use the subtitle-file option to select the file from the video folder or open its path; adjust font, color, or text scale if needed. [MX Player subtitle help]
  • If the subtitle uses SSA/ASS styling, compare how it renders in the other player. Styling and subtitle acceleration can be device-dependent. [MX Player subtitle help]

Playback stutters or fails to seek smoothly

Test a different decoder mode where the player offers one. Hardware decoding often helps, but device support is not guaranteed; software decoding is a useful alternative when hardware decoding fails, though behavior depends on the phone and file. Compare the same file in both apps before concluding that the MKV itself is damaged.

How to compare the players on your phone

Use the same Android device, app versions, and file for each player so the comparison reflects your setup rather than different media. Check each of these separately:

  • Whether playback starts and remains smooth.
  • Whether the intended audio track plays clearly.
  • Whether subtitles appear, stay synchronized, and render as expected.
  • Whether seeking works reliably.
  • Battery behavior during comparable playback.

This is a personal comparison method, not a claim that either app has been benchmarked against the other.
