Choose an NVIDIA SHIELD TV instead if local media playback, upscaling or gaming matters more; check the exact model because several expandable-storage and media-server features are specific to SHIELD TV Pro.
Which Android TV box should you buy?
| Device | Best fit | Key published features | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | Most people seeking a current, general-purpose 4K box | Up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS; Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos; 4 GB memory, 32 GB storage, built-in Gigabit Ethernet | Google’s US store and support comparison pages displayed conflicting prices; verify current local pricing and stock. |
| NVIDIA SHIELD TV | Viewers interested in AI-enhanced upscaling, local media or gaming | Android TV, playback up to 4K, AI-enhanced upscaling, GeForce NOW cloud gaming and Android gaming | Do not assume Pro features apply to the base model. |
| NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro | Enthusiasts who need the Pro-specific media and expansion functions | NVIDIA identifies Plex Media Server, USB 3.0, expandable storage and USB tuner/DVR among Pro features | Confirm the exact model and feature list before buying. |
| Chromecast with Google TV (4K) | Someone who prefers a compact dongle over a box | Google’s comparison lists 2 GB RAM and 8 GB storage | It is a dongle, unlike the Google TV Streamer’s box form factor; the Streamer has 4 GB RAM, 32 GB storage and built-in Ethernet. |

What the Google TV Streamer offers
The Google TV Streamer is a box running Android TV OS. Google lists support for up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS, with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG for video, plus Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos for audio. Its listed hardware includes 4 GB of memory, 32 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1 and Ethernet rated at 10/100/1000 Mbps. Ports include HDMI 2.1 and USB-C for power and data. Specifications are from Google’s product page.
Why the box form factor may help
Compared with the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), Google’s comparison lists twice the RAM and four times the storage for the Streamer: 4 GB and 32 GB versus 2 GB and 8 GB. It also identifies the Streamer as a box with built-in Ethernet, while the Chromecast is a dongle. Those differences can matter if you want wired networking or more onboard space for apps, but they do not guarantee a particular speed or performance improvement. Source: Google’s comparison page.

Check the price and HDMI cable before buying
Google’s US store page displayed $149.99 when retrieved, while Google’s support comparison page displayed $99.99. Because those official pages conflict, neither figure should be treated as a definitive current price; check the live listing in your region. Regional pricing and availability are not established here.
Google lists a certified HDMI 2.1 cable as required and sold separately. Check whether you already have a compatible cable before ordering another one. Google’s specifications identify the cable requirement.

Match the box to your TV, network and apps
Confirm your TV can use the resolution you want
A device’s maximum output does not mean every show will appear at that resolution. Google says resolution depends on the capabilities of both the device and display, as well as the content. Its support page says the Streamer can work with a TV or display that has HDMI even if its resolution differs from the device, while recommending a 4K TV for the best experience. Choose wired or wireless networking deliberately
The Google TV Streamer has built-in Ethernet rated at 10/100/1000 Mbps, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11ac. If you specifically want a wired connection, that built-in port avoids relying on an Ethernet adapter. Actual streaming quality also depends on your network and the content source.

Before purchase, confirm that the apps you use are available for the device in your country and check any subscription requirements directly with the service.
