Start with Android’s built-in permission controls, then choose a network tool based on the kind of traffic you want to manage and whether you need per-app control.
Permissions and tracker blocking are separate controls
An app can have permission to access something on your phone and also send network requests; those are different activities. Android permissions govern access to restricted data and actions, such as location, contacts, audio recording, or connecting to a paired device. Network filtering works on requests sent to domains or by apps. A DNS filter, for example, may block a request to a known tracking domain, but it does not revoke the app’s location permission.

That distinction matters when choosing a tool. If your concern is that an app can use the microphone or location, review its permissions in Android settings. If your concern is that apps contact known tracker domains, consider DNS filtering or a tool with app-level network controls. Many people will want both kinds of controls, but neither proves that every form of tracking has stopped.
Android’s permission model includes install-time, runtime, and special permissions. Its guidance emphasizes user control, transparency, and limiting access to what a feature needs. For everyday use, that means granting sensitive access only when the app has a clear reason to use it, and revisiting the decision if you stop using that feature.

Start by reviewing Android permissions
Check access granted to each app
- Open your phone’s Settings and look for Privacy, Permissions, or an app’s individual settings. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and Android version; use Settings search for “Permissions” if the path on your phone differs.
- Review sensitive categories such as location, camera, and microphone. Check which apps have access and whether the access makes sense for the app’s purpose.
- Remove access that is not needed. If an app’s feature stops working, decide whether that feature is worth restoring the permission rather than granting access automatically.
- Revisit permissions when an app’s role changes or you no longer use a feature. Permission decisions are not a substitute for checking network activity, but they limit what an app can access through the permissions system.
Use Privacy Dashboard for access timelines
On supported devices running Android 12 or later, Privacy Dashboard shows when apps accessed location, camera, and microphone. It is useful for checking the timing of access to those sensitive permissions. It is not a general record of internet connections, DNS lookups, or tracker requests, so an app’s absence from a dashboard timeline does not establish that it made no network requests.
Open Settings and search for Privacy Dashboard. On supported phones, select a permission category to view its access timeline and identify the apps involved. Device makers may arrange privacy settings differently, and dashboard availability or presentation can vary. If the search does not find the dashboard, check the phone’s Android version and manufacturer help rather than assuming that another privacy screen shows the same information.
Consider unused-app permission handling
Android documentation describes permission auto-revocation for unused apps on supported versions. This can reduce lingering access when an app is no longer used, but availability depends on Android version and device support. It does not replace a deliberate review of permissions for apps you actively use.
How network filtering limits tracker requests
DNS filtering blocks selected domains
When an app looks up a domain name, DNS filtering can compare that lookup with a resolver’s policies or filtering rules. A rule can block a known advertising or tracking domain, which may prevent a request from reaching that destination when the app’s traffic uses the configured filtering path. AdGuard documents DNS server selection, filters, and user rules; Rethink DNS + Firewall documents DNS-based blocking of known ad, tracker, and malicious domains.

The method is domain-based, not a guarantee that all tracking behavior is visible or blockable. If a request cannot be distinguished by its domain, DNS filtering alone cannot identify it as a tracker and block it on that basis. Its coverage also depends on the resolver’s rules and whether the app’s request goes through that DNS path. A blocked domain may be needed for an app feature, so filtering can sometimes cause a service to behave unexpectedly.
No blocking percentage or universal coverage figure is established by the feature descriptions. Treat DNS filtering as a way to reduce requests to domains covered by the rules, not as proof that an app has stopped tracking.
VPN-based filtering and app firewalls
Some Android network tools use the system’s VPN interface to route traffic through a filtering service on the device. A VPN permission request in this context can therefore be part of local filtering; it does not, by itself, establish that the app is connecting to a commercial remote VPN. Rethink describes routing traffic through its app and offers controls to prevent selected apps from connecting over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Its documentation also describes blocking selected tracker endpoints while allowing an app’s other connections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePer-app blocking is broader than blocking a particular endpoint: it can stop an app from reaching the network at all, which may interrupt features that depend on connectivity. Endpoint selection can be more targeted, but it requires the user to decide which destinations to block. A filtering tool that uses Android’s VPN interface may also interact with another VPN app. Compatibility depends on the tools and device configuration; do not assume that two VPN-based services can run together or that they always conflict.

Broader filtering and HTTPS inspection
AdGuard describes its Android app as providing system-level filtering. Its documented options include DNS protection and HTTPS filtering. HTTPS filtering decrypts traffic locally using a locally installed certificate, applies filtering, and then re-encrypts traffic for communication with the destination. That is a more involved configuration than DNS filtering, and it should not be treated as a setting every user needs to enable.
Before enabling HTTPS filtering, read the provider’s current documentation and understand the configuration and compatibility trade-offs for your device and apps. A locally installed certificate does not make every connection filterable, nor does the feature description establish that every app will work identically with inspection enabled.
Compare the options by what they control
| Option | Primary control | Useful when | Limits and setup considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android permissions and Privacy Dashboard | Access to restricted data and actions; supported Android 12+ dashboards show timelines for location, camera, and microphone. | You want to review sensitive access or see when an app used a covered permission. | Does not function as a tracker-domain blocklist or a general log of network connections. Menu layout and feature support vary by device. |
| AdGuard for Android | Provider-documented system-level filtering, DNS servers, filters, user rules, and HTTPS filtering. | You want DNS filtering with additional filtering options and are prepared to consider deeper configuration. | DNS and HTTPS filtering are different layers. HTTPS inspection involves a locally installed certificate and additional setup; feature descriptions are not independent efficacy tests. |
| Rethink DNS + Firewall | Provider-documented DNS blocking and per-app firewall controls through its Android traffic-filtering approach. | You want to block known domains or control which apps can use Wi-Fi or mobile data. | Blocking an app’s network access can interrupt its features. VPN-interface use may interact with other VPN tools, depending on configuration. |
| DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection | A feature in DuckDuckGo Private Browser for Android intended to block third-party trackers in apps. | You want a focused option aimed at third-party app tracker requests, including requests when apps are not in use. | DuckDuckGo says the feature operates locally and does not collect personal data; that is the provider’s description, not an independently verified guarantee. It does not replace permission management. |
The vendor descriptions establish different functional approaches, not a head-to-head ranking or independent test result. Pick by target layer, desired degree of control, configuration appetite, and how the tool fits with any VPN you already use.

- “Which apps used my location, camera, or microphone?” Start with Android permissions and, on a supported Android 12-or-later device, Privacy Dashboard. Review or remove access in settings if it is not justified by the app’s features.
- “I want to reduce requests to known tracker domains.” Consider a DNS filtering option. Its effect depends on its rules and on app traffic using the configured DNS path.
- “I want to decide which apps can access the network.” Look at a firewall with per-app controls, such as the controls Rethink documents. Prefer blocking a selected endpoint when you want to allow an app’s other network connections and the tool supports that distinction.
- “I want to target third-party trackers inside apps.” DuckDuckGo describes App Tracking Protection as targeting third-party app trackers and operating locally. Keep permission review separate from this network-focused feature.
- “I want more than basic DNS filtering.” AdGuard documents broader system-level and HTTPS filtering options. Compare the extra configuration with the level of control you actually need.
Set up a privacy routine without overblocking
1. Establish a permissions baseline
Begin with Android settings, not a tracker-blocking app. Review the apps with access to sensitive permissions and remove grants that lack a clear purpose. If a permission is essential to a feature you rely on, retain it; if you are uncertain, test the app without the access before deciding whether to restore it.

2. Add one network filtering approach
Choose a network tool based on the layer you want to manage. A DNS-based option is suited to requests to known domains. A firewall is suited to controlling app connectivity. A tracker-protection feature may focus on third-party tracker requests. Avoid enabling multiple overlapping filters at once while you are learning their effects, because that makes it harder to identify which rule caused a problem.
3. Review the requested network configuration
Read the tool’s current Android setup instructions before approving system prompts or changing advanced options. In particular, note whether the tool uses Android’s VPN interface, changes DNS settings, or requests HTTPS filtering configuration. These mechanisms do not have identical scope or compatibility implications, and support details can change over time.
4. Check everyday app behavior
After enabling filtering, use the apps and features you depend on. If an app fails to load content or loses a function, determine whether a blocked domain or app-level network rule is responsible. Adjust the relevant rule if the tool provides that control, rather than disabling every privacy setting by default.
5. Reassess permissions and rules periodically
Permissions can become unnecessary when an app’s role changes, while network rules may be too broad after an app update or a change in how a service works. Revisit settings when you notice a broken feature, install a privacy tool, or stop using an app. Keep the two reviews distinct: permission grants govern device access, while network rules govern traffic.

Common problems and what to check
An app feature stops working after filtering
A filter may have blocked a domain the app relies on, or a firewall rule may have stopped the app’s network access altogether. Check the rule or app-level control that changed and allow only what is needed to restore the feature. If the tool cannot show or adjust the cause, consult its current documentation and consider whether that filtering method offers enough visibility for your needs.
A VPN stops connecting or filtering appears to stop
Check whether both tools rely on Android’s VPN interface and whether your device or app configuration allows them to operate together. The available documentation does not establish compatibility for every VPN, device, or configuration, so test the combination you actually use and consult each provider’s current support material.
You cannot find Privacy Dashboard
Search Settings for “Privacy Dashboard” or “Permissions.” Dashboard support is documented for supported devices running Android 12 or later, and device makers can arrange menus differently. A permissions screen may still let you review grants even if the dashboard view is unavailable.
A DNS filter does not appear to block a tracker
Check whether the request uses the configured DNS path and whether the domain is covered by the resolver’s rules. DNS filtering only addresses requests that match its filtering rules; it cannot establish that every tracking method has been detected or blocked. Avoid interpreting a quiet rule list as proof that an app makes no tracking-related requests.
What these tools can—and cannot—establish
Android’s permission controls and supported Privacy Dashboard views provide a way to manage and inspect specified forms of device access. Network filters offer a different kind of control over requests to domains or connections made by apps. Provider feature descriptions explain how their tools are intended to work, but they do not amount to independent tests of blocking effectiveness.
For that reason, the sensible goal is layered risk reduction: grant only permissions that serve a useful feature, use a network filter that matches your needs, and investigate disruptions rather than assuming every blocked request is harmful or every allowed request is harmless. No single option in this group should be treated as a universal tracker blocker.
