If you want to assign a specific action to a particular on-screen key, Custom Keyboard Designer is the clearest documented match. Its Google Play listing describes individual key functions and optional support for multiple functions per key. FlorisBoard offers configurable gestures and a documented choice for what a long-pressed delete key does, while AnySoftKeyboard provides other useful customization without establishing arbitrary per-key function assignment in its reviewed feature list.
Which Android keyboard lets you change individual key behavior?
For direct assignment of functions to chosen keys, start with Custom Keyboard Designer. The app’s Google Play listing says users can assign functions to keys and arrange layouts; it also describes an optional package that enables multiple functions per key. That is different from changing colors, adding swipe gestures, or choosing what a key does on long-press.

The listing describes a free base package supporting up to four rows and twelve keys per row. Its optional Extended Design Package adds unlimited rows and keys plus design import and export. The separate Extended Keyboard Package lists advanced function types, including a code editor and hardware keyboard support. Check the current listing in your region for package availability, prices, Android compatibility, and which package includes the specific behavior you want; those details can change.

How the alternatives differ
| Keyboard | Documented key behavior | Other customization | Important limit or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom Keyboard Designer | Assign functions to individual keys; optional multiple functions per key. | Arrange custom layouts; design import/export is listed with the Extended Design Package. | Free base package supports up to four rows and twelve keys per row. The listing describes additional optional packages; check the current regional listing for package details and compatibility. |
| FlorisBoard | Configurable gestures and a documented delete-key long-press choice: delete the last character or the last word. | Customizable themes, keypress sound and vibration, and gestures for swipes, spacebar, and delete. | Does not document a general editor for assigning any action to any key. F-Droid lists version 0.5.2 for Android 8.0 or newer; the project describes FlorisBoard as beta. |
| AnySoftKeyboard | Arbitrary per-key function assignment: not stated on the reviewed project feature page. | Gesture typing, correction and next-word suggestions, per-app tint, sound and vibration, and emoji customization accessed with a long-press. | Its listed customization features do not establish parity with Custom Keyboard Designer for assigning individual key functions. |
When FlorisBoard is enough
FlorisBoard is a reasonable choice if your goal is to change a defined interaction rather than build a wholly custom key map. Its official release discussion documents a choice for the delete key’s long-press action: “Delete last character” or “Delete last word.” Its F-Droid listing also describes configurable gestures, sound and vibration, and themes.
That specific delete-key setting should not be mistaken for a universal per-key remapping system. FlorisBoard’s theme documentation explains how to import or create themes and use theme extensions, which concerns appearance rather than arbitrary key-function assignment.

When AnySoftKeyboard fits better
AnySoftKeyboard’s project page lists gesture typing, correction and next-word suggestions, dark mode, per-app tint, keypress sound and vibration, and customization of emoji accessed with a long-press. Choose it for those kinds of adjustments; the reviewed feature list does not establish that you can assign arbitrary functions to individual keys.

- Assign an action to a particular key: Custom Keyboard Designer is the strongest documented fit.
- Give one key a specific long-press alternative: FlorisBoard documents delete-last-character versus delete-last-word.
- Change themes, gestures, sounds, or correction behavior: FlorisBoard and AnySoftKeyboard list these types of options, though their feature sets differ.
- Change which symbol appears first when you long-press: Treat this as a specific requirement to verify in the app’s current settings. A community question uses phrasing such as “put my preferred symbol first,” but that question is not authoritative evidence that any of these keyboards supports it.
Before switching, check the current app listing and settings for your Android version and the exact key action you need. “Customizable” may mean themes, gestures, a particular long-press choice, or individual function assignment; only the last of these directly answers a request to change what a chosen key does.
