Google says Android emulators are not yet supported there, and that Linux hardware acceleration—including GPU and video decode—is also unsupported. If you want to use Android apps, check whether your Chromebook supports Google Play. If you develop apps, Google documents a separate route for testing directly on a compatible Chromebook with ADB.
Are there Android emulators for Chromebook?
Not as a supported option in Chromebook Linux, according to Google’s Linux setup documentation. It states that Android emulators are not yet supported and that hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, is not yet supported. That makes standard Linux emulator recommendations a poor fit: the documented environment does not support the emulator workflow or its expected acceleration.

This does not mean every Chromebook is unable to run Android apps. Google Play on supported Chromebooks runs compatible apps natively; it is not a virtual Android device. Developers can also test their apps directly on a Chromebook using ADB, which is a testing route rather than a general-purpose emulator.

| Route | Best for | What it provides | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play on Chromebook | Using Android apps | Native Android app access on supported Chromebooks | Play Store support is limited to some models, and individual apps may be incompatible. |
| Android emulator in Linux | Running a virtual Android device | No supported route established by Google’s Chromebook Linux documentation | Android emulators and hardware acceleration are not yet supported. |
| ADB testing on Chromebook | Developers testing their own apps | Run and test an app directly on a compatible Chromebook | Not a general emulator workflow; enabling it has device-wide consequences. |
| Another Chromebook with Google Play support | People whose current device cannot run a required app | Native Android apps, when both device and app are compatible | Check the precise model and app; buying compatible hardware does not provide a general emulator. |
Check whether your Chromebook supports the app
- Update ChromeOS. Google’s instructions recommend installing the latest available ChromeOS updates before setting up Android apps.
- Check for Play Store support. Open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that control is missing, Google’s instructions say the Chromebook does not work with Android apps.
- Check the app itself. Google notes that not all Android apps work on Chromebooks. A required device feature—GPS, for example—may be missing even when the Chromebook has Play Store support. Check the app listing and whether the app’s required features match your model.
- Consider device management. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may block Android apps or the Play Store. Ask the administrator before troubleshooting or changing settings.
Google documents options for resizing newly downloaded Android apps into phone, tablet, or resizable layouts. Supported games can also use keyboard and mouse controls. These features can make native apps more practical on a Chromebook, but they do not add a virtual Android device or make Linux emulators supported. For organizational deployment, Google’s Chrome Enterprise guidance recommends testing an app on a small number of managed Chromebooks first. It calls out varying requirements such as touchscreens, styluses, screen rotation, resolution, continuous internet access, and memory; it gives general guidance of at least 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage, not a guaranteed minimum for every personal app use.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
When buying a different Chromebook makes sense
If your current device lacks Play Store support, a Chromebook that supports Google Play may provide the native Android app access you need. Verify both the exact Chromebook model and the particular app before buying: support varies by device, and general Play Store availability does not guarantee that every app will run. A compatible Chromebook is an alternative for app use, not a substitute for a general-purpose Android emulator.
What developers can do: test directly with ADB
Google documents direct Chromebook testing for developers who use Linux and Android Studio. This does not create a virtual Android device; it lets you run your app on the Chromebook itself. Follow Google’s ADB testing instructions and account for the device-wide effect before enabling the setting.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Set up Linux on the Chromebook and confirm the device supports Android apps.
- Open Chromebook developer settings and enable ADB debugging, following Google’s current instructions for the device.
- If Android Studio prompts you to choose a device when running the app, select the Chromebook.
- Test on the Chromebook models and configurations your users actually have, especially where an app depends on hardware or display capabilities.
Important: Google says ADB becomes available to all Chromebook accounts once enabled. Turning it off requires restarting and Powerwashing the Chromebook, which erases stored data. This is a consequential development setting, not a low-risk workaround for someone who simply wants to install an unavailable app.
Check extended-update trade-offs before changing settings
Eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can opt into extended updates for a total of 10 years of automatic updates from the device’s platform release, according to Google’s extended-updates guidance. The opt-in has an Android trade-off: it removes Android apps and Google Play and erases on-device Android data. If you do not opt in, Android apps and the Play Store remain, but automatic updates will not continue. Eligibility and timing depend on the model, so check the page for your exact Chromebook before changing the setting.
