Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can cut down on unwanted phone use without blocking calls, messages, maps, work tools, or other essential apps. Start with Android’s built-in Digital Wellbeing Focus mode: choose only the distracting apps to pause, and leave the apps you rely on outside that list. If you need something different, Fewest reduces home-screen prompts, one sec adds a pause before selected apps open, and ActionDash gives you a more detailed usage picture.
These are self-management tools, not treatments or diagnostic apps. The right fit depends on whether you want awareness, fewer visual cues, launch friction, or scheduled pauses.
Which Android option should you try first?
Try Digital Wellbeing before installing anything. It is built into Android on supported devices and combines usage reporting with tools such as app timers, bedtime settings, and Focus mode. Names, menus, and available controls vary by device and Android version; Google’s Digital Wellbeing help page describes the general controls.
| Option | Best fit | How it keeps essentials available | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Digital Wellbeing | Starting without another app; usage awareness, timers, bedtime schedule, or temporary focus | Focus mode pauses only the apps you select. Keep calls, messages, maps, work, authentication, and other essentials off that list. | Menus vary. Timers close an app when its allowance runs out, and some work or school accounts may not support them. [Google Android Help] |
| Fewest | A home screen that prompts habitual opening; a minimal text-list launcher | Pin useful apps and apply its mindful pause to chosen apps from the launcher. | It changes the home-screen experience. The developer says some privacy-lock behavior applies only when apps are opened through Fewest. Check Google Play for current premium features and purchase terms. [Google Play: Fewest] |
| one sec | A deliberate interruption before opening selected apps | Apply the intervention only to chosen apps and leave essentials outside it. | The service also describes stronger blocking and time-limit options. Its reported 57% fewer app openings, on average, is a vendor claim, not an independently verified comparison here. [one sec] |
| ActionDash | Reports on screen time, app launches, notifications, and unlocks, with optional focus controls | Focus mode pauses selected apps; leave essentials unselected and schedule around a routine. | Its Google Play listing says it uses Accessibility Services for website detection and declares collection of location, app activity, and other data types. Review current permissions and disclosures. [Google Play: ActionDash] |
How can you pause only distracting apps on Android?
Focus mode is the most direct match if your goal is to make a few apps temporarily unavailable without disrupting everything else. Google’s instruction is explicit: “When Focus mode is on, you can’t use these apps and won’t get notifications from them.” That applies to the apps you selected for pausing, not every app on the phone. Which app fits the habit you want to change?
Use Fewest if the home screen is the trigger
Fewest replaces a conventional icon-heavy launcher with a minimal text list. That can reduce visual cues and make launching a chosen app more deliberate. It is a launcher, so using it means changing how the home screen works; pin the apps you need regularly and test whether that layout suits your routine. Its developer describes launcher data as local, but check the live listing for current privacy and purchase details. [Google Play: Fewest]

Use one sec if you want a pause at launch
one sec describes an interruption before selected apps open, adding a moment to reconsider an automatic launch. That is distinct from its optional stronger blocking and time-limit features: use only the intervention level you want, and exclude essential apps. The service’s figure of 57% fewer app openings on average is its own claim; it should not be read as proof that every user will have that result or that screen time falls by the same amount. [one sec]
Use ActionDash if you want to understand your usage first
ActionDash emphasizes reports for screen time, launches, notifications, and unlocks, alongside focus controls. That makes it a possible choice if you want to see which apps dominate your use before deciding what to restrict. Its Play listing identifies Accessibility Services use for website detection and declares collection of location, app activity, and other data types. Review the current listing and permissions before enabling access. [Google Play: ActionDash]

How to choose and set up a restriction without losing access
- Check the usage chart. In Digital Wellbeing, look for apps taking substantial time or generating frequent notifications. Start with the few apps most associated with unwanted checking.
- Match the tool to the trigger. If notifications pull you in, reduce those alerts or use Focus mode. If habitual tapping starts on the home screen, try a simpler launcher. If you open an app automatically, add launch friction to that app alone.
- Protect essential access. Keep calls, messages, navigation, work, authentication, and any other personally essential apps outside the pause or intervention list. Test the setup before relying on it during a time-critical task.
- Try a limited change first. Set a short trial goal, then review whether the pattern you care about changed. Avoid a blanket restriction that interferes with daily tasks.
- Check the live app listing before installing. Permissions, data disclosures, pricing, and device compatibility can change; confirm them on Google Play or the developer’s current site.
What these apps can—and cannot—establish
The reviewed materials do not establish that one of these current Android options is clinically superior or that any app diagnoses or cures addiction. A 2024 descriptive study of Google Play self-help disconnection apps used marketplace data collected in March 2024; it does not demonstrate clinical effectiveness for the named products. [SAGE: “Self-helped digital disconnection on Google Play”]
Use “phone addiction” as a description of unwanted or hard-to-control use, not as a diagnosis made by an app. These tools can add awareness, friction, or temporary limits; whether that helps depends on your needs and routine.
