For an older Radeon, start with an AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition graphics profile, then adjust settings for the specific game that needs help. Use Anti-Lag to prioritize input response, Boost to trade some image quality for performance in supported games, or Chill to regulate frame rate and reduce power and heat. They address different goals, and Chill does not work alongside Anti-Lag or Boost in AMD’s documented configuration. Your GPU and driver determine which options are available, so no setting guarantees a universal FPS increase.
Start with a profile, then make changes per game
AMD says its predefined graphics profiles offer most users a good balance of visual quality and performance for their intended use. Choose a profile as a starting point rather than changing every option at once. AMD Software allows graphics settings to be applied globally or to individual application profiles; a per-game profile is the safer choice when only one title needs tuning, because it avoids changing behavior in other games. See AMD’s graphics settings guide.

AMD’s instructions use Adrenalin 23.9.1 examples. The support guide was updated March 3, 2025, but that does not establish that every label or control is identical in later releases. Options can also vary by hardware and configuration. Use the guide to understand the settings, then check what your own driver actually offers.

Anti-Lag: prioritize input response
Anti-Lag is intended to reduce delay between your inputs and the resulting image by dynamically adjusting frame timing. AMD says it works best when the game is GPU-limited. It is a responsiveness feature, not a promise of higher average FPS. If a game feels sluggish and the GPU is the limiting factor, try it and judge whether control feels more immediate.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
AMD’s Anti-Lag product page lists support requirements of RX 400-series and newer consumer discrete GPUs. That does not establish identical support for every integrated or legacy GPU, so check for the option in your Adrenalin installation. AMD’s explanation and configuration steps are in its Anti-Lag, Boost and Chill guide; product requirements are on the Anti-Lag page.
Boost: accept dynamic resolution for performance
In supported games, Radeon Boost changes resolution in response to user input to favor performance. The trade-off is image quality: the picture may become less sharp while the resolution changes. AMD describes Boost as most useful when the GPU is the bottleneck. Test it only if you are comfortable with that visual compromise, and inspect image quality during movement as well as performance. AMD’s guide refers to a minimum resolution-change slider, but the control should not be assumed to exist in every game or driver.

Chill: prioritize power and heat
Radeon Chill dynamically regulates frame rate based on movement. It is the relevant option to test when lower power use or heat matters more than maximizing frame rate. Set sensible minimum and maximum frame rates for the game and see whether the resulting pacing feels acceptable. AMD’s documented configuration says Chill does not interoperate with Anti-Lag and/or Boost, so do not plan to enable all three together.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Change one setting at a time and compare consistently
- Choose a game and a repeatable scene. Use the same area, route or workload for each comparison so changes are easier to attribute.
- Set a baseline. Note frame-rate smoothness, responsiveness, image quality, temperature or fan noise, and whether the game remains stable.
- Change one option in that game’s profile. Test Anti-Lag, Boost or Chill according to your priority; avoid changing several settings between comparisons.
- Repeat the same scene. Keep the setting only if the improvement in your priority is worth any trade-off in image quality, power, heat or stability.
This is a practical comparison method, not a claim that AMD has published a universal benchmark for older Radeon cards. Results depend on the game, whether it is GPU-limited, the card and the driver.

Treat GPU tuning and workload settings as hardware-dependent
Do not assume every tuning control exists
GPU tuning controls vary by generation and model. AMD lists tuning presets for RX Vega and RX 6000-series GPUs and later; Undervolt GPU and Overclock VRAM are available only on select GPUs. Do not follow a tuning recipe intended for a newer card as if it applied to every older Radeon. AMD’s GPU tuning guide explicitly cautions that options may be unavailable or differ from its examples; its screenshots use an RX 7900 XTX and its walkthrough uses Adrenalin 23.9.1.
Check workload choice on pre-Vega cards
On earlier supported GPUs, AMD Software may offer Graphics (the default) and Compute workload choices. AMD says Vega and later GPUs optimize workload automatically. The Compute option is for computing applications, not a general-purpose gaming performance switch. Availability and behavior depend on the GPU and driver; AMD’s workload guide was updated November 11, 2024 and uses Adrenalin 23.9.1 examples.

Skip profiles that target newer generations
Do not use HYPR-RX as a baseline recommendation for older cards: AMD’s surfaced profile guidance identifies support on RX 7000-series GPUs and higher. More broadly, the presence of a feature in an online walkthrough does not mean it is available on a legacy GPU. Check the profile and setting in your own installation before relying on it. See AMD’s graphics profiles information.
