Best Alternatives to Ultravox for Real-Time Voice Agents

LiveKit is worth evaluating for open-source control and self-hosting; Retell AI, Vapi, and ElevenLabs are managed-service candidates. Compare them on your channels, call flows, measured quality, and total cost.

There is no evidence-based universal winner among Ultravox’s alternatives. For teams that want an open-source framework and the option to self-host, LiveKit is a strong candidate to evaluate. Retell AI, Vapi, and ElevenLabs are candidates for teams seeking managed voice-agent services. Choose by testing your own call flows and comparing total costs on the same workload—not by ranking headline prices or vendor claims.

Which Ultravox alternative should you evaluate?

The right shortlist depends on whether you want a hosted service that packages more of the agent stack or a framework that gives your team more control and responsibility. These options do not solve exactly the same buying problem.

  • Consider LiveKit Agents and LiveKit Cloud if you have the engineering capacity to assemble and operate a voice system, want open-source components, or need the option to run infrastructure yourself.
  • Compare Retell AI, Vapi, and ElevenLabs if you are looking for a managed voice-agent service. Their official pages establish them as candidates, but the available information does not support a like-for-like ranking of capabilities or costs.
  • Keep Ultravox in the evaluation if its speech-native approach, documented connection options, or published pricing fit your requirements. An alternative is not automatically a better fit.

No matched independent test establishes which candidate has the lowest latency, best voice quality, or highest task-completion rate. Treat vendor specifications and benchmarks as claims to verify against your own workflow.

What Ultravox offers as a baseline

Ultravox describes Realtime as a hosted, API-first voice-agent platform built around an open-weight, speech-native model. Its documentation says the system processes speech directly rather than following a conventional automatic speech recognition (ASR)-to-text pipeline. It documents connections through telephony providers, web or native apps, and WebSockets, as well as tools and function calling, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), call stages, conversation history with audio and transcripts, voice cloning, SDKs, telephony integrations, and webhooks. The overview lists 26 spoken languages; that is the vendor’s stated coverage, not an independent assessment of language quality. See the Ultravox explanation of how the platform works and its product overview.

Ultravox’s homepage says the company has been acquired by Inworld to accelerate speech-to-speech research and voice-agent capabilities. The announcement does not establish what the acquisition means for product roadmaps, support, or contract terms. If any of those affect your decision, confirm them in current announcements and your agreement. The homepage also reports 91.8% on Big Bench Audio for its v0.7 model without reasoning and 97% with thinking enabled. Those are vendor-reported benchmark figures, not an independently verified comparison of complete voice-agent products or your production tasks. Ultravox homepage.

How the alternatives differ

LiveKit Agents and LiveKit Cloud: more framework control

LiveKit’s framework and media server are open source and can run locally or on your own infrastructure. LiveKit Cloud adds managed deployment, observability, and dashboards. That makes LiveKit a relevant option if you want to choose and assemble more of the system yourself. The trade-off is that greater control can also mean more engineering, deployment, and operational work. Cloud plan allowances and included deployment features vary, so check the plan details against your needs. LiveKit pricing and plan details.

Retell AI, Vapi, and ElevenLabs: managed-service candidates

These services belong on a managed-platform shortlist, but the official pages reviewed do not provide a reliable, fully comparable feature-and-price scorecard. Verify each vendor’s current product details directly: Retell AI pricing, Vapi pricing, and ElevenLabs Conversational AI. In particular, confirm available channels, model and voice choices, telephony options, concurrency, support, latency behavior, and data controls before treating a service as suitable.

Compare published prices carefully

The figures below are the listed starting or plan prices on the vendors’ pages accessed in 2026. They are not a production-cost comparison: a subscription starting price, a per-minute rate, and an open-source framework are different kinds of offers.

  1. Match the architecture to the task. Ultravox describes a speech-native approach; other systems may use a cascaded speech-recognition, language-model, and speech-generation pipeline. Test both on your actual calls, paying attention to interruptions and turn-taking rather than inferring quality from architecture labels.
  2. Decide what your team should operate. Compare a managed service with an open-source or composable framework. Account for who will build integrations, deploy changes, monitor the system, and handle failures.
  3. List required channels and telephony. Specify inbound and outbound calling, SIP or an existing provider, web or mobile apps, WebRTC, and WebSockets as applicable. Confirm support for your exact setup rather than assuming that a general integration claim covers it.
  4. Check control and data requirements. Verify model and voice selection, custom tools or function calls, prompt and call-flow controls, retrieval, recordings, transcripts, and data-handling terms. Do not assume that similar feature names imply the same behavior or contract protections.
  5. Validate production readiness. Check concurrency limits, deployment regions, observability, rollback procedures, support and service-level terms, and privacy requirements. Test the limits and failure paths that matter to your service.
  6. Price one shared workload. Use the same monthly call volume, average duration, geography, model and voice choices, and concurrency assumptions for every candidate. Add platform or session fees, inference, telephony, and hosting where applicable; do not infer that a free tier or low starting price is cheapest at production volume.
  7. Run the same quality tests. Use scripted and real-world calls to measure response latency, barge-in and interruption handling, task completion, speech-understanding errors, and voice quality. Treat vendor benchmarks as vendor claims, not as an independent comparison.

Make the shortlist fit your constraints

Start with the channel and operational requirements that could disqualify an option, then compare the survivors on a matched call scenario. For a technically capable team seeking self-hosting and framework control, LiveKit is a particularly relevant evaluation candidate. For a team that prefers a managed service, compare Retell AI, Vapi, and ElevenLabs directly on current terms and a representative workload. The published information does not establish a universal best or cheapest choice, so base the final decision on verified fit, measured behavior, and total cost for your own calls.
