The best small Android alternatives to the iPad mini are not interchangeable. Choose the Redmi Pad SE 8.7 for affordable reading, streaming, browsing and travel; consider the Lenovo Legion Tab 8.8 when demanding games and applications matter, but verify whether you are buying Gen 3 or Gen 5; and choose the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 when you want a mainstream Android tablet and local Samsung availability. None automatically matches the iPad mini’s software ecosystem, performance profile or physical feel.
Your decision should start with five checks: phone and app ecosystem, the tablet’s actual dimensions and weight, expected workload, cellular and storage requirements, and the exact regional configuration and price. The Redmi’s published specifications are clear, while Lenovo and Samsung model details vary enough that their current regional product pages must be checked before purchase.

Quick answer: which iPad mini alternative fits you?
| Tablet | Best fit | What is established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE 8.7 | Budget media, reading, browsing and travel | 8.7-inch LCD; 1340 × 800; up to 90Hz; MediaTek Helio G85; configurations up to 6GB RAM; 6650mAh typical battery; 18W charging support | 4G, memory, box contents and network compatibility vary by region. Its microSD slot is for media files, not application storage. |
| Lenovo Legion Tab 8.8 | Performance-oriented use and gaming | The reviewed August 2026 comparison positions the Legion Tab as the performance choice. | Gen 3 and Gen 5 are distinct products. Verify the exact generation and every specification on Lenovo’s regional page; no comparable independent benchmarks are established here. |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 | Mainstream Android ownership and familiar software | The reviewed comparison positions the A9 as a mainstream Android option. | RAM, storage, connectivity, price and availability differ by country and model. Confirm the local variant through Samsung before relying on a specification. |
If you already own an iPhone and depend on iMessage, AirDrop or iPad-only applications, an Android tablet may be less convenient even when its hardware is attractive. If you use an Android phone, the Android candidates generally reduce account, accessory and app-compatibility friction.

What makes a good small iPad mini alternative?
Ecosystem comes before specifications
A compact tablet is a companion device, so the phone you already carry matters. iPadOS integrates with Apple services and accessories; Android tablets use Google services and Android applications. Cloud files, password managers, messaging, purchased applications and browser data may work across platforms, but the exact experience depends on each service. Decide whether seamless continuity with your phone is worth more than a lower price or expandable storage.

TechRadar’s 2026 tablet buying guidance similarly frames ecosystem, size, intended use, performance and price as the core buying questions. Those categories are more useful than treating every tablet under nine inches as an iPad mini substitute.
Portability is more than the diagonal measurement
The Redmi has an 8.7-inch diagonal and the Legion Tab is identified as an 8.8-inch model. The iPad mini is 8.3 inches. That difference does not tell you which device fits a jacket pocket, a particular bag or one-handed reading position. Be sure to compare the manufacturer’s listed height, width, thickness and weight for the exact model, including whether the quoted weight is for a Wi-Fi or cellular version. The source material does not establish a complete dimensions-and-weight comparison, so those figures should not be assumed.
Also account for a case, keyboard, stand or cellular hardware. A cover adds bulk, and a tablet that is comfortable bare may feel less portable once protected. Xiaomi lists a Redmi Pad SE 8.7 cover as a separate accessory, with availability varying by region.
Match performance to the work
Reading, video streaming, web browsing and casual games place different demands on a tablet than large games, emulation, video editing or other sustained workloads. The Redmi’s Helio G85 and up-to-6GB configurations make it a plausible budget compact device, but the published material does not provide a directly comparable benchmark against the iPad mini or Legion Tab. The Legion Tab is editorially positioned as the performance candidate, not proven here as the fastest option.
When performance is your priority, check the exact processor, RAM, storage technology and software version on the listing you intend to buy. A model name alone is not enough when a product family spans generations or regional configurations.
Connectivity can change the buying decision
Wi-Fi-only tablets are usually simpler and cheaper to operate, but they need a hotspot or nearby network when you leave home. A cellular model can be useful for commuting, travel or field work. Cellular support is not universal: the Redmi Pad SE 8.7 4G’s bands and carrier compatibility depend on market, and a listing that says “4G” does not guarantee service on your network. Check the supported bands against your carrier before ordering and confirm whether the tablet requires a physical SIM, eSIM or a particular plan.

Storage is a workflow choice
Internal storage determines how applications and system files are installed. Expandable storage is useful for downloaded video, music, photographs and documents, but it is not always an extension of application storage. On the Redmi Pad SE 8.7, Xiaomi says microSD expansion can reach 2TB for media files and cannot store applications. The card is sold separately, and compatibility can vary. Do not buy a large card expecting it to solve an app-space shortage.

The Redmi Pad SE 8.7 is the clearest choice when the goal is a small Android tablet for everyday media and reading without paying for performance you will not use. Xiaomi’s official global and UK materials, accessed October 13, 2026, establish the following figures:
| Specification | Published detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 8.7-inch LCD, 1340 × 800, refresh rate up to 90Hz | The maximum refresh rate can make supported scrolling and animation look smoother; Xiaomi notes that not all applications support 90Hz. |
| Processor | MediaTek Helio G85 | A budget-oriented platform suited to ordinary tablet tasks; no comparable independent benchmark is established here. |
| Memory | Configurations up to 6GB RAM | Confirm the RAM and storage combination in the local listing rather than assuming the maximum configuration is sold everywhere. |
| Battery and charging | 6650mAh typical capacity; 18W charging support | These are manufacturer specifications, not a comparative battery-life test. |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.3 on Xiaomi’s UK 4G specification page | The cited wireless details apply to that regional 4G specification; other variants may differ. |
| Cellular | A 4G model is documented | Supported bands and carrier operation must be checked for your country. |
| Storage expansion | Internal storage up to 128GB; microSD expansion up to 2TB for media | External storage cannot store applications, and the card is not included by implication. |
Where the Redmi makes sense
- Reading: the compact format is easier to hold than a full-size tablet, while the LCD is suited to books, articles and comics.
- Streaming: the 8.7-inch screen is large enough for personal video viewing without the bulk of a larger tablet.
- Travel: the documented 4G version can provide connectivity away from Wi-Fi if its bands work with your carrier.
- Casual use: browsing, email, social applications and light games fit the product’s budget positioning.
Do not read those strengths as parity with the iPad mini. The operating systems, app ecosystems, physical dimensions, cameras, displays and performance targets differ. The Redmi is attractive because it covers ordinary tasks at a compact size, not because it reproduces Apple’s tablet experience.
Battery and charger caveats
Xiaomi lists a 6650mAh typical battery and 18W charging support. Its product information says some regional packages include a 10W adapter and recommends an 18W-or-higher compatible adapter for faster charging; Xiaomi’s UK specification page says no power adapter is included. Check the box contents for your country and retailer. Xiaomi’s advertised endurance figures are based on Xiaomi Internal Labs, so they should not be treated as independent, cross-tablet battery testing.
What to verify before buying the Redmi
- Open the local product listing and identify whether it is Wi-Fi-only or the 4G model.
- Check the exact RAM and internal-storage combination; “up to 6GB” and “up to 128GB” are family limits, not a promise that every market sells those versions.
- Compare the listed cellular bands with your carrier if you need mobile data.
- Confirm whether a charger is in the box. The UK page explicitly says it is not included, while some other packages may contain a 10W adapter.
- Budget separately for a compatible cover and microSD card if you need them. Xiaomi identifies the cover as a separate accessory, and the card is sold separately.
Lenovo Legion Tab 8.8: the performance and gaming candidate
The Legion Tab belongs on a shortlist when a compact tablet must handle demanding games or applications. The August 2026 comparison reviewed for this guide positions it as the performance-focused alternative, but that is editorial guidance rather than a verified benchmark result.

Legion Tab Gen 3 and Gen 5 are distinct products. Do not transfer the processor, display, dimensions, weight, storage, software or availability of one generation to the other. A retailer title can omit the generation or use a regional naming convention, so match the model number and product images with Lenovo’s official regional page.

How to evaluate a Legion Tab listing
- Identify the generation first: record the full model name and model number before comparing prices.
- Confirm the processor and RAM: these determine whether the configuration suits your games and multitasking expectations.
- Check sustained-use details: gaming performance depends on cooling, software limits and thermal behavior, not only the processor name.
- Verify display and dimensions: an 8.8-inch label does not establish the tablet’s aspect ratio, weight or one-handed comfort.
- Check storage and software support: confirm capacity, expansion options and update information for the exact market.
- Confirm availability: a generation shown on an international page may not be sold or supported in your country.
No comparable independent benchmarks are established in the available material, and there is no basis here to call the Legion Tab the fastest or best gaming tablet. Treat it as the candidate to investigate when performance outranks price, then use current Lenovo specifications and independent tests you trust for the final decision.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A9: the mainstream Android option
The Galaxy Tab A9 is a sensible starting point for buyers who want a familiar mainstream Android tablet, Samsung’s software environment and local retail support. The comparison source places it in that mainstream role, but it does not establish one universal specification.
Why the model number matters
Memory, internal storage, cellular connectivity, pricing and availability vary by region and exact model. A Wi-Fi A9 and a cellular A9 can have different model numbers and prices; a retailer may also list different RAM or storage capacities under the same family name. Confirm the current local variant through Samsung’s official materials before quoting or relying on any specification.
When to choose the A9
- Choose it when you value a conventional Android interface and Samsung’s local support more than maximum gaming performance.
- Choose the cellular version only after checking network compatibility and the total cost of the required plan.
- Choose a higher-storage configuration if your intended applications and downloads will not fit comfortably in the base model.
- Compare its verified dimensions and weight with the iPad mini and Redmi before assuming it is equally easy to carry.
The A9 is not automatically the cheapest, fastest or most available option in every country. Those conclusions require a live local comparison of the exact configurations.

How to compare portability correctly
- Write down the maximum size you can carry. Measure the compartment, sling bag or jacket pocket you actually use.
- Compare height, width, thickness and weight. Use the manufacturer’s figures for the exact Wi-Fi or cellular model, not a family-level specification.
- Add the case. Include the cover or keyboard you expect to use daily.
- Consider the screen shape. Diagonal measurements do not reveal aspect ratio, bezel size or usable reading area.
- Decide whether one-handed use matters. A slightly larger screen can be better for video but less comfortable for long reading sessions.
- Check the charger and cable you will carry. A missing adapter can add cost and travel weight.
Buying checklist for any compact tablet
- Confirm the operating system and whether your essential applications are available on it.
- Match the tablet to your phone ecosystem and file-sync needs.
- Identify the exact generation and model number.
- Verify display size, resolution, refresh-rate limits, dimensions and weight from the manufacturer.
- Choose Wi-Fi-only or cellular based on where you will use it.
- For cellular models, check bands, SIM type and carrier support in your country.
- Choose enough internal storage for applications; treat microSD as media expansion unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
- Check RAM and storage together, not just the largest number in a product family.
- Confirm charger, cable and cover contents for your region.
- Check software-update information and return coverage from the seller.
- Compare the complete local cost, including accessories and any data plan. Current prices and stock are not established here and can change after publication.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every 8.7- or 8.8-inch tablet feels like an iPad mini
Screen diagonal is only one measurement. Aspect ratio, bezels, thickness and weight can make two similarly sized tablets feel very different. Obtain the complete physical specifications before ordering.
Buying the wrong Legion generation
Gen 3 and Gen 5 are not interchangeable labels. If the listing does not clearly identify the generation and model number, pause the purchase and verify it on Lenovo’s regional site.
Rank #4
Treating 4G as universal
A cellular badge does not prove compatibility with your carrier. Check the listed bands and network requirements for your country, especially when importing a tablet.
Recommended Free Tools
Expecting a microSD card to install applications
Xiaomi explicitly limits Redmi Pad SE 8.7 external storage to media files. Keep sufficient internal space for applications and system updates.
Assuming the charger is always included
Package contents differ. Xiaomi’s UK specification page says no adapter is included, while some regional packages may include a 10W unit. Read the local box-contents section.
Using a family name as a price comparison
Prices, stock and configurations change by country and date. Compare identical RAM, storage, connectivity and generation, then include the cost of a charger, cover, storage card and cellular service where applicable.
Bottom line for different buyers
Buy the Redmi Pad SE 8.7 when compact everyday use and a lower-cost Android route are the priority, provided the local configuration and cellular details suit you. Investigate the Lenovo Legion Tab 8.8 when performance is the deciding factor, but verify Gen 3 or Gen 5 before comparing anything. Consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 when you want a mainstream Android tablet and Samsung’s regional availability, while checking the exact model rather than assuming a universal specification. Keep the iPad mini in contention if Apple-device continuity, iPadOS applications or the smallest overall physical package matters more than expandable storage or Android choice.
