If you mean Amazon’s Echo Dot Max (2025 release), the strongest alternatives in this shortlist serve different priorities: the Sonos Era 300 is built around spatial audio and multi-room expansion, while the JBL Authentics 500 offers Alexa and Google Assistant simultaneously. Neither manufacturer’s cited product information establishes that its speaker replaces the Echo’s built-in Zigbee or Thread hub functions. Check your devices’ radios and hub requirements before switching.
First, which Amazon speaker is “Echo Max”?
Amazon’s support and developer documentation identifies the model as the Echo Dot Max (2025 release), rather than “Echo Max.” Amazon lists it as a Zigbee hub device and a supported Matter device, and identifies it as a Thread border router. The comparison below uses that model as the reference point.

There is no single best replacement for every household. A speaker that accepts voice commands for smart-home products does not necessarily include the radios or hub functions those products need to connect. Choose based on both your listening setup and your devices’ connection standards.

Sonos Era 300: for spatial audio and a growing Sonos setup
Sonos presents the Era 300 as a spatial-audio speaker and documents Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, AirPlay 2, and far-field microphones. It can be paired with an identical speaker or added to a Sonos multi-room or home-theater setup. For line-in, Sonos specifies its Line-In Adapter.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Consider it if you already use Sonos, want AirPlay 2, or plan to add speakers around your home. The cited Sonos product information does not establish Zigbee or Thread hub capabilities. If your current Echo directly connects smart-home devices, confirm how those devices would connect before replacing it.
JBL Authentics 500: for Alexa and Google Assistant on one speaker
JBL describes the Authentics 500 as a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart speaker. Its product page says Alexa and Google Assistant can be used simultaneously for music playback and smart-home control. That combination makes it a candidate for households that want both assistant ecosystems available on one speaker.

Assistant support alone does not show that the speaker can replace an Echo’s Zigbee hub or Thread border router. JBL’s cited product information also does not establish that every smart-home device or music service will work. Check the specific compatibility you need, including whether a separate hub is required.
Check smart-home compatibility before choosing
Amazon says compatible Echo devices with a built-in hub can connect to and control supported Zigbee lights, locks, switches, sensors, and plugs. Its current Zigbee list includes Echo Dot Max (2025 release).

Amazon’s Matter documentation lists Echo Dot Max as a supported Matter device and a Thread border router. It describes support for Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread on compatible Echo devices. Supported Matter categories include lighting and plugs, sensors, locks and window coverings, thermostats, fans, appliances, and robotic vacuums, subject to device and feature support.

- Confirm what provides the hub or border-router role. Voice-assistant support is not proof that a speaker includes the required hub or radio.
- Verify the specific device and feature. Support for a device category does not guarantee that every product, feature, or regional version is compatible.

Quick Recap
Which alternative fits?
- Choose Sonos Era 300 if spatial-audio positioning, AirPlay 2, and expansion within Sonos matter most—and you have confirmed how your smart-home devices will connect.
- Choose JBL Authentics 500 if having Alexa and Google Assistant available simultaneously on one Wi-Fi/Bluetooth speaker is the priority—and you have separately checked your hub needs.
- Keep the Echo Dot Max in the comparison if its built-in Zigbee or Thread functions are important to your setup. A replacement speaker’s voice control does not by itself preserve those functions.
