Virtual Desktop is a paid, graphical option with support for several standalone headset families; ALVR is open source and supports Windows and Linux hosts, but calls for more hands-on setup. Which one suits you depends first on your headset, PC, game, and home network—not on a proven universal performance winner.
What PC VR streaming does
With PC VR streaming, the gaming PC runs the game, sends video and audio to the headset, and receives the headset’s control input. The game is not rendered by the headset as a standalone title. Steam describes Remote Play as streaming video and audio to another device while returning input to the PC, using what its official documentation calls “real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol.” Steam Remote Play

Before comparing apps, check that your specific headset, PC operating system, graphics hardware, and game or runtime are supported. The wireless network is also part of the setup: the cited options recommend 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset and a wired PC-to-router connection. Those recommendations do not guarantee a particular level of latency, image quality, or reliability.
Virtual Desktop: a paid option with broad headset support
Virtual Desktop is a good fit if you want a graphical app and your headset and PC are supported. Its developer lists Meta Quest 1, 2, 3, 3S, and Pro; Pico Neo 3, Pico 4, and Pico 4 Ultra; HTC Vive Focus 3, Vive XR Elite, and Vive Vision; Play for Dream MR; and Samsung Galaxy XR. The developer says SteamVR and Oculus Rift games can be streamed from a VR-ready Windows PC, but notes that not every game is compatible. Check the official Virtual Desktop site and its linked game compatibility list before buying.

The site lists Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and macOS for general computer use, but PC VR game streaming specifically requires a VR-ready Windows PC. It recommends connecting the computer to the router by Ethernet and using a 5 GHz AC or AX Wi-Fi router for the headset. Its troubleshooting guidance also flags same-network requirements, firewall or VPN interference, and public apartment or office Wi-Fi that prevents devices from communicating.

ALVR: open source, with more configuration
ALVR streams VR games from a PC to a headset over Wi-Fi and is the stronger candidate if you prefer open-source software, need a Linux host, or want to configure the streaming setup yourself. Its project README lists Quest 1, 2, 3, 3S, and Pro; Pico; Vive Focus; Play for Dream; and other devices. Quest 1 is not available through the Meta store. The README lists Windows 10/11 and Linux hosts, not macOS. See the ALVR project README for current device and setup details.
ALVR requires SteamVR and a gaming PC with a supported video encoder and current drivers. Its README lists NVIDIA NVENC for GTX 1000-series or newer cards, AMD AMF/VCE, and Intel VPL on supported chips. For networking, it recommends 802.11ac 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset, Ethernet for the PC, and the same router for both devices unless you configure a routed connection.

Compared with a more guided app, ALVR asks you to pay closer attention to SteamVR, encoder support, and network configuration. Its open-source status does not by itself guarantee that a particular headset, game, or PC will work without troubleshooting.

What about Meta Air Link or a USB cable?
Meta Air Link and a wired USB connection are often mentioned as other ways to connect a standalone headset to a PC. Current official requirements and supported combinations for those options are not established by the sources linked here, so check Meta’s current documentation for your headset and PC before relying on setup instructions or compatibility claims.

Check your network before buying hardware
Steam’s Remote Play documentation lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as a minimum and a wired PC-to-router connection. Steam Support recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E; ALVR and Virtual Desktop also recommend 5 GHz wireless for the headset and Ethernet for the computer. Steam Link support A Wi-Fi 6 router may be worth considering if your current network does not meet the relevant setup needs, but it is not a guaranteed fix or an automatic upgrade requirement.

Choose by compatibility, then setup preference
- Identify the exact headset model. Confirm that the streaming client is available for it; broad family support does not mean every model or store offers the same access.
- Check the PC host. Confirm the operating system and, for ALVR, that the graphics hardware supports one of its listed video encoders with current drivers.
- Verify the game and runtime. Virtual Desktop directs users to its game compatibility list; ALVR requires SteamVR. Do not assume that support for a headset means every PC VR title works.
- Check the local network. Look for 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset, a wired PC connection, and a router setup that allows the devices to communicate.
- Choose the configuration style. Consider Virtual Desktop if you prefer a paid graphical app and its compatibility checks pass; consider ALVR if you value open source or Linux hosting and are comfortable handling more setup.
The official documentation compared here does not establish that either app—or Steam Link—is always sharper, faster, or more reliable. Treat claims of a universal winner cautiously unless they are backed by a controlled comparison for your headset, PC, game, and network.
