If you want to control your Raspberry Pi’s graphical desktop remotely, start with Raspberry Pi’s built-in VNC option for straightforward screen sharing, or consider AnyDesk, RustDesk, or RealVNC if their display-server and setup requirements fit your Pi. Raspberry Pi Connect remains the simplest choice when you want browser-based access without manually configuring network addresses or firewall rules. For terminal work only, use SSH; it is not a remote desktop.

Which alternative fits your setup?

VNC with wayvnc Graphical access using Raspberry Pi OS’s included screen-sharing option, especially on a local network For Internet access, you must arrange a secure route such as a VPN or another service, or expose VNC to the Internet with the associated network and security responsibilities. Raspberry Pi remote-access documentation
AnyDesk Users who want AnyDesk and can meet its host display-server requirement Its documentation lists Raspberry Pi OS 12 (Bookworm) and later on ARM64. Incoming sessions require Xorg; Wayland is supported for outgoing sessions only. AnyDesk supported operating systems
RustDesk Users who want a choice between public connection servers and self-hosting The general client guide describes both connection routes but does not establish compatibility for every Pi board, OS image, or display server. Verify your exact configuration. RustDesk client documentation
RealVNC Connect Users willing to follow RealVNC’s Raspberry Pi setup and licensing requirements Its current Pi setup guide instructs users of the latest Raspberry Pi OS to switch to X11; headless users can use Virtual Mode. There is no reliable basis here to call one option universally fastest or most reliable: the cited official materials do not provide comparable performance measurements. Choose by access type, display server, network setup, and licensing instead.

What Raspberry Pi Connect already provides

Raspberry Pi Connect is available on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later. Raspberry Pi OS Desktop and Full include the screen-sharing version by default; the Lite variant supports remote shell without screen sharing. Connect provides screen sharing, remote shell, and remote update. Screen sharing is documented for Wayland systems, and remote shell works on all Raspberry Pi models. See Raspberry Pi Connect documentation.

Its practical advantage is reduced network setup. Raspberry Pi says: “Connect handles configuration automatically, so you don’t have to find your Raspberry Pi device’s local IP address, your network’s public IP address, or modify your local network firewall to enable external access.” If that convenience matters more than choosing a separate remote-access product, Connect may already meet your needs.

On security, Raspberry Pi says screen-sharing and remote-shell traffic is encrypted using DTLS over WebRTC, with a fresh key pair for each session, and that its servers cannot derive the session keys. These are Raspberry Pi’s descriptions of its service, not independent security test results. Details are in its Connect security documentation.

VNC: Raspberry Pi’s screen-sharing route

Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation identifies VNC as a way to share a desktop screen and says Raspberry Pi OS includes wayvnc, which users can enable. This makes VNC a natural alternative when the Pi and viewer are on the same network and you want graphical access without installing a third-party desktop-sharing product.

For access from outside your local network, VNC does not remove the network decisions: Raspberry Pi describes options including a VPN, an external service, or exposing VNC to the Internet. Those approaches carry different setup and security responsibilities. Avoid treating direct Internet exposure as a default; choose a secure path you understand and can maintain.

AnyDesk: check which direction the session goes

AnyDesk’s published compatibility information lists Raspberry Pi OS 12 (Bookworm) and later for ARM64. The important distinction is session direction: with Wayland, the Pi can initiate outgoing sessions, but incoming sessions require Xorg. If your goal is to control the Pi from another device, confirm that the Pi is running Xorg before choosing AnyDesk; Wayland support alone does not mean it can receive control.

RustDesk: public servers or self-hosting

RustDesk’s client documentation describes connecting through RustDesk public servers or through a RustDesk Server that you host yourself. Self-hosting gives you more control over connection infrastructure, but it also means taking responsibility for server setup and operation. The general client guide does not verify compatibility across every Raspberry Pi model, operating-system image, and display server, so confirm those details for your exact setup before relying on it.

RealVNC: plan for X11 and licensing

RealVNC offers a Raspberry Pi Server download and its product/support material describes support for Pi OS 11, 10, and 9. Its Raspberry Pi setup guide, updated February 6, 2026, tells users of the latest Raspberry Pi OS to switch to X11 before setup. That is a significant consideration if you want to remain on Wayland.

For a Pi without a physical display, RealVNC documents Virtual Mode for creating a headless virtual desktop. Its official product material describes a 14-day trial and a non-commercial Lite plan; the server requires a license after the trial. Since supported versions and commercial terms can change, check the current Raspberry Pi Server download page and RealVNC plans before deciding.

When SSH is enough—and when it is not

SSH provides command-line access, not a remote graphical desktop. Use it when you need to administer the Pi, run commands, or manage files from a terminal. If you need to see and interact with the Pi’s desktop, choose a screen-sharing option such as VNC, Connect, AnyDesk, RustDesk, or RealVNC instead. Raspberry Pi distinguishes SSH and VNC in its remote-access overview.

Choose by requirements, not assumed speed

  • Want the least network setup: Try Raspberry Pi Connect if your OS version and edition support the features you need.
  • Need a graphical desktop on the same network: Start with Raspberry Pi OS’s wayvnc option, then decide whether a different viewer or workflow suits you better.
  • Want AnyDesk to control the Pi: Use a supported ARM64 setup and ensure the Pi’s incoming-session host is on Xorg.
  • Want to manage connection infrastructure yourself: Investigate RustDesk self-hosting, but verify compatibility and account for server administration.
  • Need RealVNC’s headless virtual desktop: Check its X11 setup instruction, supported Pi OS versions, and current licensing terms first.
  • Only need a terminal: SSH is sufficient; installing desktop-sharing software is unnecessary.

Official compatibility pages and product terms are the basis for the version and licensing details above. None of the cited documentation establishes a comparable speed, latency, or reliability ranking, so those should not be assumed when selecting a tool.
