The best alternative depends on what you mean by “private.” For chat that DuckDuckGo says is not recorded or stored by default, consider Duck.ai. For conversations processed on your own device, consider Ollama with a locally run model. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude offer controls over model improvement or chat handling, but those settings do not make their storage, review and account-linkage practices identical. No single option can be called the most private for every user or feature.
What to compare before choosing a private AI chatbot
“Not used for training” is only one privacy property. A service may still save chats, associate them with an account, use past conversations for personalization, or retain information under safety or legal exceptions. Processing location matters too: a chat sent to a hosted model is different from one processed locally on your device.

- Model improvement: Are chats used to train or improve models, and which setting or mode changes that?
- Storage and deletion: Are conversations saved in history? What does deleting one remove, and what retention period or exception remains?
- Review: Can people or automated safety systems review conversations, and do flagged content or feedback follow different rules?
- Account and personalization: Is activity linked to an account or used to personalize responses? Do location or connected apps enter the picture?
- Processing location and features: Does a request go to a provider, pass through an intermediary, or run locally? Do uploads, voice, feedback, sync, integrations or cloud models have different handling?
The providers’ descriptions below are their own published policies, not a shared independent audit. Treat each claim as specific to that service and its stated modes and features.

Duck.ai: a hosted option with no-storage-by-default language
DuckDuckGo’s stated default is that Duck.ai does not record or store chats, and that neither DuckDuckGo nor underlying model providers use them to train chat models. That is a useful distinction from simply offering a training opt-out, but it is not a promise that every feature or exception behaves identically.

Sharing feedback can share a conversation; optional Sync & Backup stores chats in end-to-end encrypted form. DuckDuckGo also notes provider-specific prompt caching, legal or abuse exceptions, and separate moderation-scanning and retention handling for image and file uploads. For some models it describes “zero provider visibility,” in which requests are anonymized and processed in a trusted execution environment. These are DuckDuckGo’s descriptions of its service, not an independent audit of every model and feature.
ChatGPT: use the available privacy controls deliberately
OpenAI describes controls for whether chats are used to improve models, along with ways to access, export and delete conversations and associated account data. It also says it does not sell user data or share conversations with advertisers or marketing partners. These controls address different concerns: model improvement, data access and deletion should not be treated as one setting or as proof that every chat mode has identical retention.
Before discussing sensitive material, check the current settings and the handling rules for the mode you are using on OpenAI’s consumer privacy page. Do not assume a choice about model improvement alone determines whether a conversation is saved or how a particular mode handles it.

Gemini: Temporary Chat and Keep Activity are different choices
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, says Temporary Chats are not used to train Google’s AI models. It also says that with Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to improve those models if you do not submit feedback. The conditions matter: turning off Keep Activity and submitting feedback are not equivalent to using Temporary Chat.
Google says Gemini may use past chats for personalization when Memory is on, and describes Temporary Chat as an option for conversations users do not want remembered or used to personalize their experience. Claude: separate model-improvement choices from deletion timelines
Anthropic says users can turn off Model Improvement. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when that control is enabled. Deleting a conversation removes it from chat history immediately; Anthropic says it is deleted from backend storage systems within 30 days.

That deletion timeline is not the only retention rule. If users allow chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, Anthropic says data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. It also describes longer retention for inputs and outputs flagged by automated trust-and-safety systems, classification scores, feedback, and cases involving legal requirements or policy enforcement. Ollama is the clearest option here for people seeking local processing: it says prompts, responses and model interactions processed locally are not collected, stored, transmitted or accessible to Ollama. It may collect limited device and usage metadata. This changes the processing location rather than simply changing a hosted service’s training setting.
Keep the scope narrow. Ollama’s policy treats cloud-hosted models separately; content sent to them is processed transiently to provide the service. A local setup also does not make every model, extension, download or network connection private by default. What Meta AI’s own explanation says
Meta’s explanation, updated November 21, 2025, distinguishes among public posts, private posts, private messages and information users share directly with AI. Meta says public Facebook and Instagram posts were used to train the generative AI models discussed there, while private posts were not. It says private messages with friends and family are not used to train its AIs unless someone chooses to share them with AI.
Meta also says information shared in generative AI interactions may be used to improve products and for other purposes, questions may be shared with trusted partners for relevant responses, and automated systems and people review interactions. It describes a /reset-ai command for deleting information shared in chats across Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp. This is Meta’s own explanation and should not be read as an independent audit or as a complete account of every current product-specific rule. - Want a hosted service with a stated no-storage default? Duck.ai’s documented default is the closest match among these options; check its feature and exception rules before using uploads, feedback or syncing.
- Want chat processing to stay on your device? Consider Ollama with a local model, and verify that your particular workflow does not send prompts to a cloud model or another service.
- Want controls within a familiar hosted chatbot? Compare the specific model-improvement, temporary-chat, history and deletion controls for ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude rather than relying on a general “private” label.
- Concerned about personalization or account linkage? Check account activity, Memory, connected apps and other relevant settings; a no-training claim alone does not answer those questions.
