For a smart speaker with Alexa and wired audio input, the Sonos Era 100 is the clearest documented alternative. It accepts analog audio through its USB-C port, but you need Sonos’s separate Line-In Adapter and a suitable audio cable. If you want to add Alexa to speakers you already own, the Echo Input can connect by cable or Bluetooth, though current new-product availability is not established.

Sonos Era 100: the clearest complete-speaker option
The Era 100 connects an audio source through its USB-C port using Sonos’s Line-In Adapter. Sonos lists CD players and turntables with built-in phono preamps as examples of compatible sources. The port is not a conventional analog input socket: the adapter is part of the connection.

- Connect the Sonos Line-In Adapter to the Era 100’s USB-C port.
- Connect the source to the adapter with a 3.5 mm audio cable, or an RCA-to-3.5 mm cable if the source has RCA outputs.
- Check whether the source needs a preamp. Sonos specifically advises checking this for turntables; a turntable without a built-in phono preamp may need a separate one.
Sonos lists the Line-In Adapter as a USB-C-to-3.5 mm accessory compatible with Era 100. The adapter and audio cable are separate items, so account for both when planning the setup. Sonos’s line-in product guidance describes which products use line-in and notes that adapter requirements differ by product.

For Alexa, Sonos’s Era 100 product guide says it “Works with Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa.” The company notes that voice-service availability varies by country and language. Read Sonos’s Era 100 product guide for its stated assistant compatibility.
Echo Input: use Alexa with speakers you already own
Amazon’s support documentation describes Echo Input as a way to add Alexa to an external speaker. It can connect using a 3.5 mm audio cable or Bluetooth. That makes it a different kind of alternative from buying a new smart speaker: the existing speaker or stereo remains responsible for playback.

Amazon’s device support and setup pages document how Echo Input works, but they do not establish that it is currently sold new. Treat it as a legacy or used-market option, and verify the condition and compatibility of a particular unit before buying.
Other Sonos line-in products are not all smart-speaker substitutes
Sonos lists Era 100 SL, Era 300, Five, Amp, and Port among products with line-in. Era 100 and Era 300 require a Sonos adapter; other products can have different adapter needs. The list mixes standalone speakers and system components, so it should not be read as a list of equivalent Echo replacements. Sonos’s supported-products guidance is the place to check the connection requirements for a specific model.

Check the exact Echo Studio generation before relying on wired input
Do not assume every Echo Studio generation has the same input. Technology-review coverage of the 2025 Echo Studio reports that it dropped the earlier model’s optical/3.5 mm combo input. Because that claim is generation-specific and based on review coverage, verify the official specification for the exact model you are considering rather than relying on the Echo Studio name alone.

How to choose
- Choose the Era 100 if you want a complete speaker with documented analog line-in and Alexa support, and are comfortable buying its adapter and a separate cable.
- Consider Echo Input if you already have a powered speaker or stereo and find a suitable unit; its documented connection options are 3.5 mm cable and Bluetooth.
- For another Sonos model, check whether it is a speaker or a system component and confirm its specific adapter needs before purchase.
- For an Echo Studio, confirm the generation and its official input specification rather than assuming the older model’s connector remains.
