If you want a character built around studying arcane magic, the Wizard is the most direct fit in Dungeons & Dragons’ official class descriptions. If you mean a character with Arcana skill proficiency—or simply a magical theme—Sorcerer, Warlock, Bard, Eldritch Knight, and Arcane Trickster offer distinct alternatives. These are matches for different concepts, not a universal power ranking.
This comparison focuses on the 2014 and 2024 D&D fifth-edition Basic Rules, plus a 2025 playtest document based on the 2024 Player’s Handbook. “Arcana” can mean the Intelligence-based skill, while “arcane” can describe a broader magic concept; the two are not interchangeable.

What does “Arcana-focused” mean?
Arcana is a skill associated with knowledge about magic. A character can have Arcana proficiency without being a Wizard or even being a full spellcaster. Conversely, a character can cast spells without having Arcana proficiency. The 2024 Basic Rules list Arcana as a skill a Wizard or Sorcerer may select, while a Bard chooses any three skills.

If you mean a scholarly character who studies magic, Wizard is the clearest official match. If you mean someone magical, knowledgeable about magic, or interested in arcane themes but with a different story or play style, the alternatives below may fit better.

Best alternatives by character concept
| Option | Magic concept | Character identity | Best fit if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sorcerer | Innate magic | Full spellcaster | Magic to come from within rather than from study |
| Warlock | Occult knowledge and pact magic | Full spellcaster | A magical identity shaped by a patron or pact |
| Bard | Spellcasting alongside broad skill choice | Skilled, versatile character | Magical ability without making scholarship the whole character concept |
| Eldritch Knight | Magic within a fighter framework | Martial fighter | To prioritize fighting while adding spellcasting |
| Arcane Trickster | Magic within a rogue framework | Rogue | To build a rogue whose concept includes magic |
The table summarizes concept and class identity, not comparative strength. The official rules sources cited here do not provide popularity, effectiveness, or preference statistics for these options.
Sorcerer: magic that is innate
Choose Sorcerer if you want the character’s magic to be innate rather than the product of academic study. In the 2024 Basic Rules, Sorcerer is a Charisma-based class and may select Arcana as a skill proficiency. That means the class can support both an innate-magic story and a character trained in magical knowledge, without making a spellbook the center of the concept.

Warlock: occult knowledge and a pact
Warlock suits a character whose magic is framed through occult knowledge and pact magic. That gives the character a different story from the Wizard’s study-centered identity: the defining connection is a pact, not primarily a spellbook and formal research.
Bard: broad skills with spellcasting
Bard is a useful option when you want a spellcaster who is also built around a wide range of skills. The 2024 Basic Rules let Bards choose any three skills, so a Bard can take Arcana while keeping the character’s identity broader than “magic scholar.”

Eldritch Knight: fighter first, magic too
For a character whose main identity is martial, Eldritch Knight offers a fighter foundation with magic as part of the concept. It is a partial-caster path, not a full Wizard alternative with equivalent spell access.
Arcane Trickster: rogue first, magic too
Arcane Trickster works on the same broad principle for a rogue-focused character: the character’s main framework is rogue, with magic added through the subclass. It is a way to keep a rogue identity while bringing magic into the build, not a substitute for a full Wizard’s spellcasting progression.

How Wizard differs in the 2014 and 2024 rules
2024 Basic Rules
The 2024 Wizard uses Intelligence as its primary ability, has a d6 Hit Point Die, and can select Arcana among its class-skill options. Its class description centers on the study of magic. Its features include a spellbook, Ritual Adept, Arcane Recovery, and preparing spells from the book. These details make it the most direct choice when the character concept is specifically scholarly arcane study. See the 2024 Basic Rules class descriptions.

The 2014 Wizard is likewise described as a student of arcane magic, uses a spellbook, and chooses an Arcane Tradition at level 2. The 2014 rules list eight schools for that tradition: Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy, and Transmutation. These are 2014 rules details; do not assume that every class feature or subclass detail carries over unchanged to 2024. See the 2014 Basic Rules class descriptions.

What partial casting means for multiclass characters
In the 2024 rules, the multiclass spell-slot calculation counts one third of Fighter or Rogue levels, rounded down, when the character has the Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster subclass. This is a spell-slot calculation rule; it does not give either subclass the same spell access as a full Wizard. See the 2024 Basic Rules multiclass spell-slot calculation.
Are the 2025 Arcane Subclasses official?
No. Wizards of the Coast’s 2025 Unearthed Arcana: Arcane Subclasses document presents experimental, draft options using the 2024 Player’s Handbook rules. It states, “They aren’t officially part of the game.” Treat those options as playtest material rather than established official character choices unless a later publication changes their status. Read the 2025 playtest document.
Choose by the character you want to play
- For a character defined by studying magic, choose Wizard.
- For magic that is innate, consider Sorcerer.
- For occult knowledge and pact magic, consider Warlock.
- For spellcasting plus a broad skill set, consider Bard.
- For a fighter or rogue identity with magic added, consider Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster, respectively.
Before building, settle on the rules version your table uses. The class details differ between the 2014 and 2024 rules, and the 2025 Arcane Subclasses document is playtest material rather than official rules.
