Best Alternatives to Chrome DevTools for Full-Page Screenshots on Windows

Edge is the simplest built-in option for full-page screenshots on Windows. Firefox and OpenCapture offer alternatives, while Snipping Tool is for visible screen captures.

Microsoft Edge’s built-in Screenshot tool is the simplest alternative to Chrome DevTools for capturing a full webpage on Windows. In Edge, open the page, choose Screenshot from the browser menu, then select the full-page option. Firefox also has a built-in full-page capture, while the OpenCapture extension adds editing and export options. Windows Snipping Tool is for visible screen areas and windows; Microsoft’s documented modes do not establish it as a scrolling webpage capture tool.

Which alternative should you use?

Option Full-page webpage capture Best fit Main caveat
Microsoft Edge Screenshot Yes: full page or selected area Quick capture with a browser-native workflow and markup Microsoft says availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. Microsoft Edge Screenshot Tool
Firefox screenshot tools Yes: entire page or a single element Firefox users, including those who want command-line options The Developer Tools route requires enabling its screenshot button; the console route is more technical. Mozilla Firefox Source Docs
OpenCapture extension Yes, according to its publisher Capture with crop, annotation, blur, and PNG/PDF export Feature and privacy claims come from the publisher; check current store availability and permissions. OpenCapture
Windows Snipping Tool Not established in Microsoft’s cited documentation Visible screen, window, or region captures Its documented modes do not substitute for scrolling webpage capture. Microsoft Snipping Tool guide

For a fast capture without installing an extension, start with Edge. Choose Firefox if you already use it or need element-level capture and console controls. Choose OpenCapture if editing and export options matter and you are comfortable reviewing an extension’s permissions.

Capture a full page in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Edge.
  2. Open the browser menu and choose Screenshot. If the command is not visible, look in the browser’s additional tools or search the menu for “Screenshot”; wording and availability can vary by version.
  3. Select the option to capture the full page rather than only the visible area.
  4. Review the result, add markup if needed, then copy or save it.

Microsoft describes Edge Screenshot as capturing either a full page or a selected area, including long or moving webpages, with options to add comments or markup before copying or saving. The exact feature availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version. See Microsoft’s feature description.

Capture a full page in Firefox

Use the Developer Tools screenshot button

  1. Open Firefox Developer Tools for the page.
  2. Enable the screenshot button in the Developer Tools settings or toolbox customization. The button may need to be added before it appears.
  3. Choose the screenshot control and select the full-page capture option.

Mozilla documents Developer Tools capture of an entire page or a single element. See Mozilla’s screenshot instructions for the current toolbox workflow.

Use the Web Console for more control

Firefox’s Web Console accepts a screenshot command. To capture the full page, open the console and run:

:screenshot --fullpage

Mozilla documents additional command options for delay, device pixel ratio, filename, clipboard, and CSS selector. Consult the current Firefox screenshot documentation for their syntax and behavior. This route is useful when you want more control than a one-click capture, but it is less straightforward than Edge’s browser menu.

Use an extension for editing and export

OpenCapture’s publisher describes an extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox that captures full pages and supports cropping, annotation, blurring, and PNG or PDF export. That makes it a candidate when you want to edit or redact a capture before sharing it, or use the same workflow across browsers. Its privacy and local-processing statements are publisher claims, not an independent audit; review current extension-store listings and requested permissions before installing. OpenCapture’s product page and project repository provide publisher information.

When Windows Snipping Tool is enough

Use Snipping Tool when you need a screenshot of what is currently visible: a rectangular or freeform region, an application window, or the full screen. Microsoft documents annotation and save/share workflows for these captures. Its cited documentation does not describe scrolling capture of an entire webpage, so choose Edge, Firefox, or a browser extension when content continues below the visible area. Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is an image or PDF returned by an API rather than a manual browser capture, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo.

One GET request can return a screenshot; for example, this cURL command saves the result as a WebP file (replace the URL with the page you need):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, output options, and other capture parameters. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Common problems and practical checks

  • The full-page option is missing in Edge: Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary. Check that Edge is up to date and consult Microsoft’s current feature page; if the option remains unavailable, use Firefox or an extension.
  • The Firefox screenshot button is missing: Mozilla’s workflow requires enabling or adding the button in Developer Tools. Use the Web Console command :screenshot --fullpage as an alternative.
  • The capture is only the visible viewport: Confirm that you chose a full-page option rather than selected-area or screen capture. Snipping Tool’s documented screen, window, and region modes are not full-page webpage capture.
  • An extension’s behavior or availability differs: Store listings and extension features can change. Check the current listing, browser compatibility, and requested permissions before relying on it.

Choosing based on privacy, edits, and setup

  • Fewest setup steps: Edge Screenshot, if the feature is available in your browser.
  • Element capture or command controls: Firefox’s Developer Tools or Web Console.
  • Crop, blur, annotation, and PNG/PDF export: OpenCapture, subject to reviewing its permissions and publisher claims.
  • Only a visible region or window: Windows Snipping Tool.
  • Automated captures in an application or agent workflow: ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP server rather than a manual browser tool.

These options serve different jobs: browser tools capture webpage content, Snipping Tool captures the visible desktop, and an API is suited to repeatable programmatic capture. No hands-on speed or image-quality comparison is established here, so choose by the workflow and controls you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
