A parent-child water-play class can offer a structured introduction to the pool, but it is not swim training that makes an infant safe. When a life jacket is appropriate, choose a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved model for its intended setting—and keep supervising closely.
What can I use instead of a baby pool float?
Adult-supported water play
For a short pool visit, the straightforward alternative is to hold your baby and play together in the water, provided conditions are suitable and you can maintain touch supervision. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises keeping infants and toddlers within arm’s reach in and around water. Stay attentive and close enough to touch; a float, nearby adult, or momentary glance away is not a substitute. AAP guidance on pool dangers and drowning prevention.

If you cannot give the baby your full attention while in the water, take them out of the pool. A pool float does not make independent play safe.

A parent-child class can provide a shared, structured way for an infant to become familiar with a pool. The adult remains responsible for close supervision; class participation is not a safety device or proof that a baby can swim. Ask how the facility handles supervision, water quality and temperature, and what parents are expected to do in the water.

Swim lessons when a child is ready
Swim instruction is a later skill-building option, not a direct replacement for a float during infant pool play. The AAP says lessons can begin after a child’s first birthday depending on readiness. Lessons do not make a child drown-proof or replace supervision and barriers. See AAP advice on when to start swim lessons and what to consider.
Are baby pool floats safe?
A baby pool float is an aquatic toy, not a life-saving device. Seats, rings, canopies, inflatable toys, and water wings can create a false sense of security; the AAP advises avoiding floaties, water wings, and inflatable toys as safety substitutes because they can deflate and do not prevent drowning. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) likewise says no flotation product can substitute for constant adult supervision.

One specific warning should not be generalized to every float: on April 2, 2026, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using the identified blue and green “Relaxing Baby” floats, intended for children ages 3–36 months. The agency said those products can flip or submerge an occupant, reported a drowning death of a two-year-old using the hazardous floats, and urged consumers to puncture the inflatable areas and dispose of them rather than resell or give them away. Read the CPSC warning about Relaxing Baby floats.
Can my baby use water wings or a neck float?
Do not rely on water wings or other inflatable toys to keep a baby safe in the pool. They can deflate and are not a substitute for an adult staying within arm’s reach.

Nor should a neck float be treated as a safer substitute. A CPSC standard for neck floats manufactured after June 15, 2026 addresses hazards including slipping through, restraint failure, and submersion. A product standard is not an endorsement of neck floats as life-saving devices: the CPSC continues to warn that flotation products cannot replace supervision. The agency reported 115 incidents involving infant neck floats, including two reported infant fatalities and two injuries requiring hospitalization, from January 2019 through January 2024; those figures concern neck floats, not every type of baby pool float. CPSC information on the neck-float standard and warning.
When is a life jacket an appropriate option?
A life jacket is distinct from an inflatable pool toy. A properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved child life jacket may be appropriate around open water, and the AAP says young children and weaker swimmers may benefit from one near pools. Check the specific jacket’s approval label, size and fit, fastening, and intended setting; do not assume a generic vest or “puddle jumper” is approved. A life jacket does not permit unsupervised pool access or replace an adult’s close attention. See AAP guidance on drowning prevention and life jackets.

Can I take my baby to a swim class?
Yes, an infant can join a parent-child water-play class for pool familiarity if the setting is suitable and the adult stays close and attentive. Keep that purpose distinct from learning to swim: the AAP says there is no evidence that infant swim programs for babies under one year reduce drowning risk. For older children, lessons may help build skills when they are developmentally ready, but they remain one layer of protection rather than a replacement for supervision. AAP guidance on swim lessons.
