The best alternatives to Apple Home are Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant. The right choice depends on the exact devices you own, the phones and voice assistants your household prefers, and whether you want a straightforward app or more control over local automations. You may not need to leave Apple Home entirely: compatible Matter devices can work across multiple platforms, and Home Assistant can connect supported devices to Apple Home and other ecosystems.
Which Apple Home alternative fits your household?
Start with your devices and the controls you need, rather than choosing a platform by name. A product’s Matter or Thread label does not guarantee that every feature will appear in every app. Confirm the exact model, supported device category, required hub or bridge, and available controls in the platform’s current compatibility information.

| Platform | Consider it if… | Check before switching |
|---|---|---|
| Google Home | You want an established app and voice ecosystem and your devices are supported. | For Matter, confirm device-category support and that you have a compatible Google hub. |
| Amazon Alexa | Your household already uses Alexa and your devices are supported by its ecosystem. | Confirm support for the precise Echo or other controller model and the device’s features; a complete current model-and-category list is not established here. |
| Samsung SmartThings | You want to consider another mainstream smart-home platform and your devices work with its hub setup. | Verify the current hub and exact device combination; a complete current compatibility and feature-parity list is not established here. |
| Home Assistant | You want to combine supported brands and protocols, build flexible automations, or prioritize local control. | Plan for always-on hardware and more setup and maintenance than a typical app-led ecosystem. |
Google Home: an app-and-voice ecosystem with Matter support
Google Home is a sensible candidate if its app and voice controls suit your household and your devices are supported. Google documents Matter support, but a Matter device still needs a compatible Matter hub for setup and local Matter control. Device categories and hub requirements can change, so check Google’s current Matter device setup guidance and supported setup requirements against the exact products you plan to use.

For Matter devices at home, Google says commands can travel directly over Wi-Fi or Thread. When you are away, the command goes through the cloud to the home hub, which then carries it out locally. That distinction matters if your priority is keeping in-home control independent of cloud routing; it does not mean every device or remote feature works without internet.

Amazon Alexa: a credible option, but verify the controller
Alexa is a mainstream alternative, and some newer Amazon Echo devices are identified as Matter controllers in Home Assistant’s Matter integration documentation. That does not establish compatibility for every Echo, every Matter device category, or every device feature. Before buying or migrating, check the exact Alexa controller and device combination in current official support information.
Samsung SmartThings: check the hub and device combination
SmartThings is another option to investigate. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation identifies SmartThings Station as a Matter controller, but that alone is not a complete current list of compatible SmartThings hubs, devices, or controls. Verify the exact models and features through current SmartThings support information before basing a migration on a broad compatibility claim.

Home Assistant: a flexible control layer, not just a replacement app
Home Assistant suits people who want to bring supported devices from different brands and local protocols into one system, create flexible automations, or keep more control on hardware in the home. It can also work alongside Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa. A device that does not directly support Apple Home may still appear in the Home app after you add it to Home Assistant and expose it to Apple Home through the supported integration. See the Home Assistant interoperability FAQ.
Hardware, cost, and upkeep
The Home Assistant software is free and open source, but it needs suitable always-on hardware. The official FAQ recommends Home Assistant Green as a plug-and-play hub; suitable existing hardware such as a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine can also run it. Radio accessories may be needed for specific protocols: the FAQ names Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter. These are optional components, not requirements for every installation. Home Assistant Cloud is also optional and provides hosted features including remote access and integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa. Details are in the official Home Assistant FAQ.

What happens when the internet goes down?
Devices communicating locally over protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, or ESPHome can continue operating without internet, provided the device and setup are genuinely using local communication. Devices reachable only through a manufacturer’s cloud integration will not be accessible through that cloud connection during an outage, and some remote-access or assistant features require internet. Home Assistant’s FAQ and Matter documentation also describe network and controller compatibility considerations; IPv6 and particular hardware/software combinations can affect Matter setup and available features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Matter changes—and what it does not
Matter is a smart-home control standard that runs over IP networking. Depending on the device, its network connection may use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or Thread, a low-power mesh transport. Thread alone does not mean a product supports Matter: some Thread devices use HomeKit or another vendor-specific control protocol. Home Assistant explains the distinction in its Matter integration documentation.

Matter can reduce ecosystem lock-in, but it does not promise identical controls, automations, or feature availability in every app. Google’s Matter guidance says compatible devices can be shared with multiple certified smart-home apps through Multi-Admin. Each platform needs its own compatible hub, and the device must be shared into the second app. Platform support for device categories also changes over time.

Quick Recap
How to choose without losing device support
- List the devices you already own. Record each exact brand and model, any required bridge, and the controls you rely on—not just whether the packaging mentions Matter or Thread.
- Check platform support for those models. Confirm the required hub, supported device category, and the specific controls exposed in the app you are considering.
- Decide whether you need a full switch. If a compatible Matter device can be shared with another certified app, Multi-Admin may let you try a second platform while retaining the first. A compatible hub is needed for each platform.
- Choose your preferred balance of simplicity and control. App-led ecosystems may be easier to set up; Home Assistant offers broader integration possibilities but requires always-on hardware and ongoing configuration.
- Check internet and protocol dependencies. Identify which devices communicate locally and which rely on manufacturer clouds, and whether you need Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or an additional radio.
