The best alternative depends on what you need to plan: use RoomSketcher or Planner 5D to test layouts, HomeByMe or Homestyler to explore finishes and room styling, or IKEA’s planners when your choices center on IKEA products. Canva works for mood boards, not measured 3D plans. Treat any consumer app as a visualization aid—not confirmation of exact dimensions, structural feasibility, or code compliance.
Choose by the work you need the tool to do
Remodel planning involves two different tasks: establishing where things fit and deciding how the finished room should look. A tool can be useful for one without being suitable for the other. Start with whether you need editable geometry and dimensions, or visual ideas to discuss with a household member, designer, or contractor.

RoomSketcher: editable plans and sharing
RoomSketcher is a layout-oriented option for creating and editing 2D or 3D plans and sharing a legible view of the proposed room. Its comparison materials emphasize floor-plan accuracy and editing, but check the current product details for measurement displays, exports, AI conversion or capture features, and any free-tier or credit limits before committing. RoomSketcher’s 2026 floor-plan creator comparison and its RoomSketcher–HomeByMe comparison are vendor-authored.

Planner 5D is suited to testing a room arrangement in 2D and 3D and visualizing furniture. Its features and workflow should not be assumed to produce construction-ready documentation: verify measurement controls, any scanning or conversion capability, export options, and the limits of the plan you intend to use. The available descriptions discuss AI features and walkthroughs, while noting limited measurement or construction-oriented output. RoomSketcher’s comparison and TechRadar’s 2025 software roundup describe the category.
#1 Best Overall

- Decorate house interiors and exteriors, add furniture, fixtures, appliances and other decorations to rooms
- Build the terrain of outdoor landscaping areas, plant trees and gardens
- Easy-to-use interface for simple home design creation and customization, switch between 3D, 2D, and blueprint view modes

HomeByMe: materials and room renders
HomeByMe is a better fit when the priority is exploring styling, materials, and photorealistic room images. Decide first whether you need an editable, dimension-focused plan or mainly a visual concept; then check current export choices and project limits. RoomSketcher’s comparison of the two products is useful for understanding their different emphases, but it is vendor-authored rather than an independent test.
Homestyler: decorating and branded furniture
Homestyler can help explore decorating choices, branded furniture, and render quality. For a remodel, assess its plan-editing depth separately from how attractive its images look. A polished render is not evidence that the room geometry or furniture clearances are measured correctly. The cited feature description comes from RoomSketcher’s vendor-authored comparison.
Rank #2
- Draw walls and rooms on one or more levels
- Arrange doors, windows and furniture in the plan
- Customize colors and texture of furniture, walls, floors and ceilings
- View all changes simultaneously in the 3D view
- Import more 3D models and textures, and export plans and renderings
IKEA planners and IKEA Kreativ: IKEA-centered rooms
IKEA’s planning tools make sense when you are arranging a room around IKEA products or previewing catalog items. Their usefulness is tied to that product catalog, and planner workflows differ by room type. They are less appropriate if you need a neutral product library or a complete remodel plan independent of one retailer. RoomSketcher’s comparison discusses the IKEA-focused tools.
Floorplanner: browser-based concepts
Floorplanner is an option for browser-based layouts and quick interior concepts. Before building a project in it, confirm that the current free-tier restrictions and export features meet your needs; older reviews may not reflect present limits. TechRadar’s 2025 roundup describes the software, but is not a current plan or pricing guarantee.

Canva: mood boards, not measured plans
Canva can help assemble a mood board or simple visual layout. It is a graphic-design workflow, not a dependable to-scale 3D room-planning tool. Use it to communicate color and style references, not to establish whether a proposed layout fits. RoomSketcher’s comparison distinguishes this kind of visual work from floor-plan tools.
How to compare tools before starting a project
Test a tool against the deliverable you actually need. A room image that looks convincing may still be a poor basis for ordering materials or planning construction.

- Only TOTAL 3D Home, Landscape & Deck's unique, user-friendly design helps you get started quickly. No other home design software is easier to use! Drawing your room is just a few clicks away.
- The step-by-step guides walk you through each step. The simple interface makes navigating through design options easy. Video Tutorials provide helpful tips and advice to help you design the home or garden of your dreams!
- Decorate and furnish with realistic 3D objects. Then view from any angle or fly-through a realistic rendering of your design.
- Quickly scan and trace a sketch of your dream home or garden or import a picture of any floor plan.
- The sample plans are divided up between Home Plans, Home Plans with Landscaping, Landscaping Plans, and Room Plans. With these sections, there are folders for 1 and 2 story, for lot size, or for room type. There are no specific sample plans dedicated exclusively for pools, decks, or patios, although these items may be in some of the existing sample plans.
- Check the starting input. Determine whether you can draw from scratch, import an existing plan, convert a sketch, scan a room, or only upload a photograph.
- Separate geometry from appearance. Look for an editable layout with dimensions if placement matters. Treat a rendered concept as a styling aid unless the product clearly provides the measured plan you need.
- Inspect the output and sharing workflow. Confirm that you can export or share a plan in a form your designer, contractor, or family can interpret. Find out whether exports are limited or consume credits.
- Check catalog dependence. Establish whether furniture is generic, branded, or restricted to a retailer’s products.
- Confirm access and device requirements. Check whether the workflow runs in a browser, desktop app, or mobile app, and whether scanning depends on a particular device.
- Review current limits. Verify free-tier restrictions, subscriptions, export credits, and supported devices on the product’s current official pages. Do not rely on prices quoted in older reviews.
Measure the room before trusting a layout
A measured starting plan is more useful than estimating from a photograph or generated image. Record the room’s dimensions and relevant openings before trying furniture arrangements. A laser distance measure is one optional way to collect room dimensions; Block Renovation describes a workflow using room scanning and a Bluetooth laser meter. That does not make a consumer measurement a survey or a guarantee of professional accuracy. Block Renovation’s guide to AI home-renovation tools explains the measurement workflow.

Know what a visualization cannot establish
These tools can help you explore proportions, compare finishes, and communicate an idea. They do not establish structural loads, code compliance, or final construction dimensions. Block Renovation puts the boundary plainly: “A few are free, a few cost money, and none of them replaces a contractor, designer, or your local building department.” For consequential measurements and construction decisions, have qualified professionals verify the plan and consult the relevant local building department. Block Renovation’s remodel-planning guide discusses these limitations.

What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The cited product descriptions include vendor-authored comparisons and a third-party software roundup, not independent hands-on testing for every tool in this article. Feature sets, supported devices, and plan limits can change. Use the comparisons to shortlist candidates, then verify current capabilities and terms with the product itself; do not treat a render, feature summary, or older review as a guarantee of present-day output.
