Use Standard mode for the simplest accurate SDR picture, Custom Color when you need RGB gain and bias controls, and Creator mode in sRGB when gamut accuracy matters most. For HDR10 games, enable HDR in the operating system and the game, then select HDR Peak 1000 Bright for the strongest highlights. On a PS5 or Xbox Series console, use an HDMI 2.1 input, enable Console Mode, select 4K at 120 Hz where available, and run both the console and in-game HDR calibration.
The AW3226Q cannot deliver a single perfect preset for every use. Its picture modes deliberately trade grayscale adjustment against gamma and gamut controls, so the best setting depends on whether you value accuracy, saturation, or tuning flexibility.

| PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or another HDMI console | Console Mode | Connect to HDMI 2.1; select 4K and 120 Hz where supported; calibrate HDR | Console Mode supports source-based HDR tone mapping, and the monitor’s gamma control works over HDMI in this mode. |
What the AW3226Q is designed to deliver
The AW3226Q is a 32-inch 3840×2160 RGB-stripe tandem OLED gaming monitor. Dell lists a 165 Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification, a claimed 1,000-nit HDR peak, 99% DCI-P3 coverage, Delta E below 2, G-SYNC Compatible support, FreeSync Premium Pro, and VESA AdaptiveSync support.
Those specifications describe the panel’s capability, not a guarantee that every game will run at 165 frames per second or that every HDR scene will sit at 1,000 nits. Tom’s Hardware measured approximately 276 nits for full-field SDR and 402 nits on a 25% HDR window in Peak 1000 Bright. Dell’s 1,000-nit figure applies to a much smaller 3% highlight window. Window size matters because OLED brightness changes with how much of the screen is bright at once.

Best SDR settings for a Windows gaming PC
Option 1: start with Standard mode
Choose Standard in the monitor’s picture-mode menu if you want the least complicated setup. Tom’s Hardware found Standard’s color and grayscale accurate without visible errors. Its measured average gamma was 2.02, however, compared with the 2.2 reference commonly used for a darker, more contrasty SDR tone curve. The result is a somewhat lighter-looking midtone image.
Adjust the monitor’s brightness until white areas are comfortable in your room, then leave the game’s own brightness or exposure controls at their calibrated position. A bright office normally requires a higher monitor brightness than a dark room; changing brightness is preferable to altering contrast or color controls to compensate for ambient light.
Option 2: a measured Custom Color starting point
Custom Color is the better starting point when you want to tune the panel’s grayscale balance. Tom’s Hardware’s measured settings were:

|---|---|---|
| Brightness | 84 for about 200 nits | Measured starting point; actual output varies with the individual panel and room. |
| Brightness | 47 for 120 nits | Measured starting point. |
| Brightness | 38 for 100 nits | Measured starting point. |
| Brightness | 28 for 80 nits | Measured starting point. |
| Brightness | 13 for 50 nits | Measured starting point. |
| Contrast | 75 | Use with the RGB values below. |
| User gain | Red 99, Green 98, Blue 97 | Two-point gain adjustment. |
| Bias | Red 50, Green 50, Blue 50 | Two-point low-level adjustment. |
Tom’s Hardware noted a roughly 24-nit minimum brightness. If the 50-nit starting point is still too bright, the monitor may not be able to reach a lower luminance through its normal brightness control. A colorimeter and calibration software can verify the actual luminance and white balance of your particular unit, but the published values are a practical baseline rather than a promise of identical results from every panel.

Custom Color’s limitation is important: it exposes RGB gain and bias, but it does not provide a practical gamma adjustment. If the light 2.02 gamma bothers you, changing RGB values will not correct that tone-curve behavior.
Option 3: Creator mode for sRGB content
Select Creator and choose its sRGB gamut when you want ordinary desktop applications and sRGB games to avoid the extra saturation of the panel’s wide gamut. Creator also provides gamut and gamma presets. The trade-off is that it gives up the Custom Color grayscale controls, so you cannot simultaneously use Creator’s gamut and gamma choices with Custom Color’s RGB gain and bias adjustments.
Creator also offers a DCI-P3 gamut choice. Use it for content authored for that wider color space; for standard Windows applications and most SDR games, sRGB is the safer accuracy choice. Standard or a wide-gamut setting can look more vivid, but vividness is not the same as correct color.

1. Turn HDR on before launching the game
- Connect the PC through DisplayPort 1.4 or a compatible HDMI connection from the graphics card.
- In the operating system’s display settings, enable HDR for the AW3226Q.
- Open the game’s video or display menu and enable HDR there as well. A game can remain in SDR even when the operating system is HDR-capable if its own HDR switch is off.
2. Select Peak 1000 Bright for maximum highlight impact
For HDR10, choose HDR Peak 1000 Bright when you want the most forceful specular highlights. Tom’s Hardware measured 402 nits on a 25% window and described this mode as the brightest and most impactful in its testing. Dell’s 1,000-nit claim is for a 3% window, so large bright scenes will not measure 1,000 nits.

Tom’s EOTF measurements showed the mode starting slightly dark, lifting the midtones, and then transitioning smoothly into tone mapping. That behavior can make a game look more dramatic without the abrupt clipping that a crude brightness boost would cause.
3. Calibrate the game, not the SDR preset
Do not carry the SDR brightness numbers of 84, 47, 38, 28, or 13 into HDR. HDR uses its own signal mapping. Run the game’s HDR calibration screens, setting the paper-white or logo visibility controls exactly as the instructions show. If your operating system provides an HDR calibration tool, run it after enabling HDR and before calibrating individual games.
Use Game HDR only when you prefer its more saturated appearance. Expert Reviews found it more vibrant than the neutral alternatives, but not strictly accurate. Peak 1000 Bright is the stronger default when preserving highlight impact and a measured HDR presentation matters more than extra color intensity.

PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and other console setup
Use the correct HDMI path
- Connect the console to one of the AW3226Q’s two HDMI 2.1 inputs.
- Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. An older cable can limit the link before the monitor’s 4K, high-refresh capability is available.
- Open the monitor menu and enable Console Mode.
- In the console’s display settings, select its supported 4K output and enable 120 Hz where the console, game, and display path support it. Set HDR to activate when supported.
- Run the console’s built-in HDR calibration screens.
- Open each HDR game’s own display settings and perform its separate calibration; console-level HDR settings do not automatically establish the correct paper-white and peak-brightness values for every game.
Expert Reviews reports that both HDMI inputs support Console Mode for source-based HDR tone mapping. Tom’s Hardware also confirms that the AW3226Q’s gamma control works over HDMI in Console Mode, making this mode more useful than simply plugging in a console with the monitor left in a PC-oriented preset.

Dolby Vision on Xbox and PC streaming
The monitor supports Dolby Vision. Expert Reviews found Dolby Vision playback enjoyable from an Xbox or from a PC running Netflix. Treat that as a useful media feature rather than a reason to force Dolby Vision for every game: use the format a title actually outputs, and use the game’s own HDR calibration when it is operating in HDR10.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the picture modes force a choice
Grayscale control versus gamma control
Custom Color gives you RGB gain and bias controls for white-balance adjustment, but no useful gamma control. Creator gives you sRGB or DCI-P3 gamut selection and gamma presets, but removes those Custom Color grayscale controls. This is a design trade-off in the monitor’s firmware, not a setting you have overlooked.
Accuracy versus saturation
Creator sRGB is the safer choice for sRGB-accurate work and games. Standard is an easy general-purpose option with accurate measured color and grayscale, while a wide-gamut mode can look more saturated. If skin tones, neutral grays, or interface colors look exaggerated, switch to Creator sRGB before trying to correct the problem with individual RGB sliders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHDR impact versus strict accuracy
Peak 1000 Bright concentrates its advantage in small highlights, which is why a 3% test window can approach Dell’s 1,000-nit claim while a 25% window measured 402 nits. Game HDR changes the visual balance toward vibrancy. Pick between them by preference, but do not describe the more colorful result as automatically more accurate.

165 Hz versus rendering workload
The panel can refresh at 165 Hz, but 4K rendering at 165 frames per second is demanding. Expert Reviews notes that many mid-range systems will not sustain 165 fps in demanding 4K games. Set the monitor to 165 Hz so the display is ready, then use the game’s quality, upscaling, and frame-rate options to match what your GPU can actually render. A stable lower frame rate is preferable to chasing a refresh number the system cannot maintain.
Troubleshooting common AW3226Q setting problems
The SDR image looks washed out or too light
- Confirm whether you are judging SDR or HDR. HDR and SDR use different brightness and tone-mapping behavior.
- If the problem is excess gamut rather than brightness, select Creator sRGB.
- If you are in Standard mode, remember that Tom’s Hardware measured average gamma at 2.02 versus 2.2; Custom Color RGB adjustments will not provide a practical gamma correction.
The colors look too saturated
- For desktop and sRGB games, switch to Creator mode with the sRGB gamut.
- Check that the game has not enabled its own vivid, wide-gamut, or enhanced-color option.
- For HDR, compare Peak 1000 Bright with Game HDR; the latter is intentionally more vibrant according to Expert Reviews.
HDR looks dim or highlights do not stand out
- Verify HDR is enabled in both the operating system and the game.
- Select HDR Peak 1000 Bright rather than reusing an SDR brightness value.
- Run the operating system and game HDR calibration screens again, checking that you are adjusting the correct logo or clipping pattern.
- Remember that full-screen bright scenes are limited compared with tiny highlights; the 402-nit 25% measurement is not a contradiction of the 1,000-nit 3% claim.
The console will not offer 4K at 120 Hz
- Move the cable to one of the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 inputs.
- Replace an unverified cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable.
- Enable Console Mode, then revisit the console’s resolution and 120 Hz options.
- Check the game itself: a console may support 120 Hz output while a particular title remains capped at a lower frame rate.
The monitor’s gamma option is missing
Check the active picture mode. Custom Color does not offer a practical gamma adjustment, while Creator provides gamma presets. Over HDMI, Console Mode exposes gamma control according to Tom’s Hardware’s testing. The available controls therefore change with the mode and input context rather than indicating a hardware fault.
A practical calibration workflow
- Separate SDR and HDR first. Establish the SDR mode you will use for the desktop, then enable HDR only when testing HDR games or media.
- Choose your priority. Pick Standard for simplicity, Custom Color for RGB tuning, or Creator sRGB for gamut control.
- Set room-appropriate SDR brightness. Start with the measured Custom Color value closest to your target luminance, or adjust Standard until white backgrounds are comfortable.
- Calibrate one signal path at a time. Finish the PC connection before changing to a console, because HDMI Console Mode and PC picture modes expose different controls.
- Use software calibration for HDR. Run the operating system’s HDR tool and each game’s HDR screens; do not infer HDR settings from SDR test images.
- Verify with the content you actually play. Check dark shadow detail, neutral gray menus, bright specular effects, and skin tones. If one area improves while another becomes obviously wrong, return to the mode trade-off instead of stacking more picture enhancements.
Bottom line for PC and console owners
For most PC users, Standard mode with room-adjusted brightness is the best first stop. Use Custom Color with the published RGB values when you need white-balance control, accepting that gamma remains light and effectively fixed. Choose Creator sRGB when accurate sRGB gamut matters more than those RGB controls. For HDR10, Peak 1000 Bright is the strongest impact-oriented choice; Game HDR is a deliberate saturation preference. For PS5 and Xbox, HDMI 2.1 plus Console Mode, 4K/120 Hz where supported, and separate console-and-game HDR calibration provide the most reliable setup.
