The tools that work well are built for different jobs: searching the open web and writing a cited summary, answering questions about documents you supply, or finding and comparing scholarly papers. Pick the category that matches your task first, then check the specific product’s current plan, access, and privacy terms.
Match the tool to the task
Most comparison pages rank products as if they compete on the same job. They usually don’t. The categories below separate the main research tasks, with product names drawn from a 2026 category roundup published by Dupple. That roundup is a secondary source, and the list is a map of what is discussed in the market, not a complete inventory.

| Research task | Tool category | Names in the 2026 roundup | What to check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current web discovery and a cited written synthesis | Web research agent | ChatGPT Deep Research, Perplexity, Gemini | Whether each cited link actually supports the sentence it is attached to |
| Questions about PDFs, notes, or other files you supply | Source-grounded notebook | NotebookLM | Whether answers stay within the files you uploaded, and how clearly they point to passages |
| Finding and comparing scholarly papers | Academic literature tool | Elicit, Consensus, Scite, ResearchRabbit | Coverage of your field, and whether the tool handles paper discovery, synthesis, or both |
Claude also appears in that roundup. The evidence available here does not establish which of these rows it is positioned for, so it is not assigned to one.

Within a category, judge each product on the same five questions:
#1 Best Overall
- Source type: open web, documents you supply, or scholarly literature.
- Traceability: whether claims link to sources, and whether those sources support the claim. A link that exists is not the same as a link that proves the sentence.
- Synthesis depth: whether you need a short answer, a structured literature review, or a long report.
- Workflow fit: whether you need file uploads, research planning, or a focused paper-search workflow.
- Practical constraints: price, regional availability, usage allowances, privacy terms, and export options. These change, so confirm them on each provider’s own pages.
What OpenAI says about its research agent
OpenAI describes Deep Research as a multi-step internet research capability that finds, analyzes, and synthesizes online sources into a cited report. In its February 2, 2025 product announcement, which was updated through February 10, 2026, OpenAI says users can add files for extra context and that the system can cite passages from sources.
The same announcement sets out its limits in the company’s own words. It says the system “can sometimes hallucinate facts in responses or make incorrect inferences, though at a notably lower rate than existing ChatGPT models, according to internal evaluations.” It also says the system “may struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors, and currently shows weakness in confidence calibration, often failing to convey uncertainty accurately.” Treat a cited report as a starting point for verification, not a finished answer.
The 26.6% benchmark figure
OpenAI reports a score of 26.6% on Humanity’s Last Exam for its Deep Research system with browsing and Python tools. The benchmark, as OpenAI describes it, contains more than 3,000 questions across more than 100 subjects. The figure is OpenAI’s own result from 2025. It measures performance on that exam, not citation accuracy or research quality in general, and it does not rank Deep Research against other products. Independent head-to-head results for the current tool field were not available for this guide.
A verification checklist before you subscribe
- Open the provider’s official pricing page and find the plan that includes the feature you need. Note the date you checked, because plan terms change.
- Confirm that the feature is available in your country or region.
- Read the provider’s privacy documentation for what happens to uploaded files and prompts, and whether you can opt out of data use for model training where that option is offered.
- Find the stated usage limit for the feature, such as how many deep reports or file queries a plan includes per period.
- Check export options: whether you can copy or download the output with its citations in the format you need.
- Test the tool on one question whose answer you already know. Open every cited source and check that it says what the output claims.
What this guide does and does not establish
This guide is a category overview. It does not include product testing, and it does not rank tools by accuracy, speed, or citation quality. The OpenAI statements above are vendor evidence, and the category assignments come from a secondary roundup. Pricing, regional access, usage limits, and privacy terms for every product named here were not verified, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as something to confirm on the provider’s site.
