ER/Studio and Hackolade are dedicated modelers for designing and engineering schemas. dbt and Databricks add AI assistants to analytics engineering and platform workflows. Pick by the job you need done: enterprise conceptual, logical and physical design, polyglot schema work, SQL transformation, or AI help inside a platform you already run.
This comparison is based on each vendor’s own product pages and documentation. It is not a hands-on test or an independent benchmark. No source reviewed measured how accurate or productive any of these assistants are, so treat every AI claim below as a feature to trial on your own schemas.

| If you need… | Look first at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Governed conceptual, logical and physical models across an enterprise | ER/Studio | Dedicated modeling suite with repository and team editions, standards, reusable domains, and an AI model builder |
| Modeling across relational, NoSQL, APIs, events and file formats | Hackolade | Polyglot modeling with Git-based collaboration and many schema outputs |
| AI help writing SQL models, tests and documentation in a warehouse workflow | dbt | Copilot and the dbt Wizard agent work inside dbt development |
| AI help inside a governed lakehouse workspace | Databricks (Genie Code) | Uses Unity Catalog metadata and follows its permissions |
Dedicated data modelers
ER/Studio
ER/Studio presents Data Architect as software for conceptual, logical and physical models, with standards and reusable domains. Its AI features are the ERbert assistant and an “AI Data Model Builder” that turns plain-language requirements into structured models.

The engineering features matter as much as the AI. The vendor describes logical-to-physical transformation, DDL and forward engineering, reverse engineering, model comparison and merge, and Git integration. It also describes a repository and team editions with an enterprise dictionary. Named platforms include SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, BigQuery and Amazon Redshift.
#1 Best Overall
Best fit: organizations that need a dedicated modeling environment with governance, database engineering and enterprise collaboration. All of this is vendor description. It is not a verified compatibility matrix and says nothing independent about the quality of AI-generated models, so confirm your exact database versions and the edition (individual or repository-based) you would need.
Hackolade
Hackolade positions itself for polyglot data modeling across relational databases, NoSQL, cloud analytics, APIs, event streams and data exchange. You can import existing definitions and generate artifacts such as DDL, JSON Schema, Avro, Parquet, Protobuf, OpenAPI specifications, dbt-related output and documentation.
Its Workgroup Edition page describes Git integration for versioning, branching, change tracking, collaboration and peer review. That suits a metadata-as-code habit, where models live in a repository and changes go through review.
Recommended Free Tools
Best fit: teams that model several data technologies or formats. Broad target coverage does not guarantee equal depth for every target, so check each one you need, along with the edition that includes it.

AI inside analytics and platform workflows
dbt
dbt is built for SQL data models and analytics workflows. Its product scope includes orchestration, observability, a catalog and a semantic layer. The AI documentation says Copilot can generate SQL, documentation, tests and semantic models.
The documentation also says the earlier Studio IDE Copilot experience is limited to a subset of accounts. It recommends dbt Wizard, described as an agent for investigating, building, validating and shipping dbt work. In dbt Labs’ words: “dbt Wizard is the recommended agent for dbt work.” That is the vendor’s recommendation, not an independent endorsement.
Pricing snapshot: dbt’s pricing page showed a free Developer tier, a Starter tier at $100 per user per month, and custom Enterprise pricing. That is a page snapshot, not a quote. Check usage limits, included features and any AI-related charges before you commit.
Best fit: analytics teams already transforming warehouse data with SQL. dbt is not a conceptual and physical architecture suite, so it won’t replace ER/Studio or Hackolade for diagram-led design.
Databricks Genie Code
Databricks describes Genie Code as an AI coding and data assistant. It can generate and run code, build pipelines and AI/BI dashboards, debug errors, and draw on Unity Catalog tables, columns and lineage. The documentation says it follows Unity Catalog permissions, so the assistant sees only what the user is allowed to see.
Databricks documentation records pay-as-you-go billing starting July 8, 2026, with a free monthly allowance per user. It also says feature availability and model choices depend partly on geography and workspace settings. Confirm eligibility for your region and workspace.
Best fit: organizations already working in Databricks. The reviewed material does not present Genie Code as a dedicated modeling workbench, and it does not compare its output with specialist modelers.
Snowflake (platform context only)
Snowflake’s AI page describes Cortex AI and Snowpark ML, with AI feature pricing generally following consumption-based pricing. The material reviewed does not identify a directly comparable AI data-modeling workbench, so Snowflake is context for teams on that platform, not a ranked option here.

| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Modeling scope | Conceptual, logical, physical, dimensional, relational, NoSQL, API or transformation models. Dedicated design tools and SQL transformation tools solve different problems. |
| Platform coverage | Exact databases, warehouses, formats and versions you run, not the vendor’s headline list. |
| Engineering | Forward and reverse engineering, schema comparison, DDL or schema generation, and whether generated output can be reviewed before it is applied. |
| Team workflow | Repository or Git support, branching, review, a central dictionary, lineage and role-based permissions. |
| AI behavior | What the assistant generates or changes, whether it uses your metadata and lineage, how output is validated, and which accounts and regions get access. |
| Cost | Free tiers or trials, per-seat versus usage charges, deployment constraints and enterprise quotes. |
How to evaluate the AI claims
- Choose one real, messy part of your schema, such as a legacy subject area with unclear naming.
- Give each candidate the same plain-language requirement or the same existing objects.
- Review the generated model or SQL for wrong keys, missing relationships, naming errors and invented columns.
- Check that the output exports cleanly (DDL, schemas, documentation) and survives a diff in version control.
- Confirm the assistant respects access controls on your real data and metadata.
Which to choose
- Enterprise governance and diagram-led design: start with ER/Studio.
- Mixed relational, NoSQL, API and event schemas under Git: start with Hackolade.
- SQL transformation in a warehouse: use dbt’s AI features, starting with dbt Wizard, as the vendor recommends.
- Already on Databricks: try Genie Code first. It adds no new tool and inherits your permissions.
Many teams will pair a dedicated modeler with a transformation tool. Hackolade, for example, describes dbt-related output. Prices, billing terms, feature availability and AI features change often, so check the vendors’ current pages before buying.
