For instrumental beds and sound effects, Stability AI positions Stable Audio 3.0 as a no-vocals option and offers three open-weight variants; for songs with vocals, Suno is a more direct fit, while ElevenLabs Music is another vocal-capable service to assess under its own terms. Before choosing, verify export limits and confirm that the license covers your project and the plan active when you create the track.

|---|---|---|
| Stable Audio 3.0 | Instrumental beds and sound effects; Stability AI says it does not generate vocals or lyrics. | Stability AI says Small, Small SFX, and Medium have open weights. Confirm current license terms and whether hosted use or self-hosting fits your workflow. |
| Suno | Full songs, including vocal output. | Pricing page accessed October 4, 2026 lists plan-specific credits, downloads, and commercial-use rights. Free-plan songs do not normally gain commercial rights after an upgrade. |
| ElevenLabs Music | Vocal-capable music, according to Stability AI’s comparison. | Review the applicable ElevenLabs plan and terms; its Music Terms supplement the underlying agreement. |
| Udio | Included as a song-generation option in Stability AI’s comparison. | That dated vendor comparison says downloads are disabled; confirm current export availability directly before relying on it. |
| Mubert | Included as a music-generation option in Stability AI’s comparison. | The comparison characterizes its arrangement as licensing output rather than transferring ownership; consult current provider terms. |
| Google Lyria 3 | Included in Stability AI’s comparison as a preview product. | Availability and permitted uses should be checked with Google; the comparison is not an independent product assessment. |

When Stable Audio 3.0 makes sense
For a creator who needs instrumental background music or sound effects rather than a sung song, Stable Audio 3.0 is the clearest fit described by its maker. Stability AI’s September 9, 2026 explainer says the model does not generate vocals or lyrics, so it is not the right choice if the brief depends on a singer or generated lyrics.

Hosted generation or open weights
Stability AI says the Small, Small SFX, and Medium variants have open weights. That can matter if your workflow calls for self-hosting instead of relying only on a hosted service, but open weights do not by themselves settle permission for a particular use. Stability AI describes output ownership under its Community License and says organizations above $1 million in annual revenue need an Enterprise license. Review the current license terms for your organization and intended use before deployment.
What the training-data figure does—and does not—tell you
Stability AI reports attribution for 1,278,902 training recordings in 2026, comprising 806,284 AudioSparx files and Creative Commons material from Freesound. That is a vendor-reported training-data attribution count, not an independent measure of output quality, nor proof that a particular generated track is legally safe for every use.

Rights depend on when you made the song
Suno’s rights guidance says songs downloaded while subscribed receive commercial-use rights, including monetization and use in film, television, or video games. Its separate help article says upgrading to Pro or Premier does not normally grant retroactive commercial-use rights to songs made on the free plan; those songs remain for non-commercial use unless Suno specifically grants retroactive rights. If a project may be monetized, create the track under a plan whose terms permit that use rather than relying on a later upgrade.
Commercial permission is not the same as copyright protection
A service can grant permission to use an output commercially without guaranteeing that the output qualifies for copyright protection. Suno states: “Copyright qualification and protection is determined by your region/country’s copyright office, not by Suno.” If copyright status is important to your release or client agreement, check the law and guidance applicable in your jurisdiction; do not treat the provider’s commercial-use grant as a copyright determination.

How to assess ElevenLabs Music and other alternatives
ElevenLabs Music
Stability AI’s comparison describes ElevenLabs Music as vocal-capable, but the actual permissions are governed by ElevenLabs’ terms and the user’s applicable plan. ElevenLabs’ Music Terms, last updated May 26, 2026, say they supplement the underlying ElevenLabs agreement and other policies. Read those documents together for the specific project before using generated music commercially.
Udio, Mubert, and Google Lyria
The same Stability AI comparison says Udio downloads are disabled, characterizes Mubert as licensing output rather than transferring ownership, and describes Google Lyria 3 as a preview product. These details may change and are not substitutes for current official provider terms. If file delivery is essential, verify that downloads work now and that the downloaded format and permitted uses meet your production needs.
Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Define the audio. Decide whether you need an instrumental bed, sound effects, a full song, vocals, or lyrics. Stable Audio 3.0 is described as vocal- and lyric-free; Suno and ElevenLabs Music are described as vocal-capable options.
- Check the delivery path. Confirm that the service currently allows the file exports you need, and compare any download cap with your expected output volume. Do not assume generation credits and downloads are interchangeable allowances.
- Match rights to the project. Read the terms for your planned use—such as monetized video, film, television, or a game—and verify which plan applies at creation and download. For Suno, free-plan songs do not normally gain commercial-use rights after upgrading.
- Separate license from copyright. A commercial-use grant addresses the service’s permission; copyright eligibility is a separate question that depends on applicable jurisdiction.
- Decide whether self-hosting matters. If you want to run weights in your own workflow, check the available Stable Audio variants and the current license conditions. If hosted generation is sufficient, compare the current service limits and terms instead.
