There is no independently validated “best” detector for scientific figures. Imagetwin and Proofig AI offer automated screening that can help find possible duplication, manipulation, reuse, or AI-generated imagery, but their documented features differ and a flag is only a lead for human review. Free options such as FigCheck and Forensically may help with lighter-weight checks; institutional procedures and source-data review remain essential.
What scientific-image detection tools can—and cannot—check
“Image detection” covers several different tasks, and a system that supports one should not be assumed to support all of them:

- Within-manuscript duplication: finding identical or similar image content in different figures or panels of the same submission.
- Cross-publication reuse: comparing a figure against images in a separate publication database.
- Manipulation within an image: identifying possible copied, altered, or repeated regions inside a figure or sub-image.
- AI-generated imagery: attempting to identify synthetic images, a developing capability that should not be treated as definitive.
Transformation-aware matching matters because a reused image may be cropped, rotated, reflected, scaled, recolored, or adjusted in contrast; only part of an image may overlap. A 2018 method paper described manipulation-invariant similarity for transformations including rotation, translation, scaling, perspective changes, histogram changes, and partial erasure. It is methodological context, not a performance rating for current products: Cicconet et al., “Image Forensics”.

How the options compare

What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
The available numbers describe different things, so they cannot be compared as if they were scores from one test:
- Imagetwin’s database: the vendor reported more than 160 million published figures on its product page, accessed 2026-10-04. This is a vendor-stated coverage figure, not an independently audited count.
- Imagetwin’s detection rate: the vendor reported 80%–90%, depending on image type and concern, based on internal evaluations involving flagged integrity issues from PubPeer. It also says standardized benchmarks are lacking. This should not be generalized into a head-to-head accuracy claim.
- Proofig’s database: its product page, accessed 2026-10-04, stated coverage of more than 155 million PubMed Open Source Database images. This is a vendor-stated figure.
- Proofig screening proportion: the AMA’s 2025 report relayed Proofig’s claim that approximately 25% of manuscripts screened have some level of image manipulation. That is a vendor claim reported second-hand, with the denominator limited to manuscripts screened; it is not a rate for all research papers.
No independent, directly comparable head-to-head accuracy statistic is established by these sources. Database size, results from an internal evaluation, and a vendor-reported proportion of screened manuscripts answer different questions.

How to choose a tool for your workflow
Start with the job you need done, rather than a broad “AI detector” label. Compare candidates on these points:

- Scope: Does it check duplication within one manuscript, search across publications, inspect manipulation within an image, or attempt AI-image identification?
- Transformations and figure types: Confirm support for the relevant cases—such as cropped or rotated matches, microscopy, western blots, plots, or diagrams—in current product documentation.
- Search coverage and traceability: Find out what corpus is searched, how the product shows a possible match, and whether the stated corpus size is independently verifiable.
- Data handling: Check upload, retention, deletion, deployment, and access terms against institutional rules. Imagetwin says uploaded files are deleted after processing and scan results can optionally be saved for 90 days; verify current terms before using unpublished figures.
- Review workflow: Check whether reports, version information, export, integration, and case documentation fit the people who must assess and resolve alerts.
- Validation: Ask what evidence supports accuracy claims and whether the evaluation is independent, reproducible, and relevant to your figure types.
A defensible screening and review process
- Preserve the originals. Keep original data and submitted/source files. Record which files and software version were reviewed where the system supports it. Imagetwin says its application version appears on the results page and PDF report, and that results may change as detection logic changes.
- Organize by figure and panel. Keep the evidence mapped to each figure and sub-panel so a possible match can be traced and reviewed in context. The Utah procedure includes figure/panel organization and metadata review.
- Run the screen, then investigate alerts. Compare a flagged region with source data, neighboring panels, legends, methods, and prior publications where appropriate. Check whether the apparent similarity has a legitimate explanation.
- Document the alert separately from the conclusion. Record what the software flagged and what a reviewer found. Do not infer fabrication, plagiarism, intent, or misconduct from an alert alone.
- Check policies before upload. Review current vendor terms, institutional policy, journal instructions, and any raw-file submission requirements before uploading unpublished or sensitive research material.
AI-generated scientific figures remain difficult to assess
AI-image identification is an unsettled part of research-image screening. The University of Utah procedure dated 2024-02-06 says detection procedures were being tested and that synthetic images can be difficult to detect, especially without original raw images. Imagetwin labels its AI-image feature beta. Treat any result as a prompt for closer examination, not proof that an image is synthetic or authentic.

Raw files, metadata, methods, and expert interpretation can provide context that a detector alone cannot. A screening result should be evaluated under the relevant institution’s and journal’s procedures.
