There is no single best AI assistant for every task. Based on editorial comparisons—not a shared hands-on test—ChatGPT is positioned for broad daily work, Claude for long documents, Gemini for work tied to Google services, Microsoft 365 Copilot for Office and Teams workflows, and Perplexity for research where source links matter. Choose by the work you need done and the software you already use, then verify current plan terms before paying.
How to choose an AI assistant
Start with the task, then consider where your files and work already live. A tool that fits your documents or productivity suite may be more useful than one that claims to be best overall. For research, consider whether you need visible links to sources. For a paid plan, compare the same details across services: region, monthly or annual billing, usage limits, features, and any bundled software or storage.

- Task fit: Consider drafting, long-document analysis, research, coding, or productivity needs.
- Ecosystem fit: If your files and daily work are already in Google services or Microsoft 365, that may influence your shortlist.
- Research transparency: Decide whether a workflow benefits from links to sources.
- Plan economics: Compare current price and terms on the vendor’s own page, using the same region and billing cadence.
- Evidence quality: Separate editorial recommendations and survey findings from standardized, controlled tests.
Which assistant fits each workflow?
ChatGPT for broad daily work
A September 2026 editorial comparison positions ChatGPT as a general-purpose choice for daily work. That is a use-case recommendation, not proof that it outperforms alternatives on a common test. Check ChatGPT’s plan page for current offerings and features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteClaude for long documents
The same comparison positions Claude for work with long documents. Whether it suits you depends on your own documents and tasks; the available sources do not establish a controlled ranking. See Claude’s plan page for current plan details.

Gemini for work in Google services
Gemini is a natural candidate to consider when your work is already organized around Google services. Google’s subscriptions page describes Google AI Pro and Ultra offerings with Gemini access; check Google AI plans for current terms.
Microsoft 365 Copilot for Office and Teams workflows
An editorial comparison positions Microsoft 365 Copilot for work in Office and Teams. The consulted Microsoft page is for business pricing, so it should not be treated as a complete consumer price list. See Microsoft’s business pricing page for the scope it covers.

Perplexity for research where source links matter
TechRadar’s June 2026 guide describes Perplexity as research-oriented, with source links. That description may make it worth considering when you want to inspect sources alongside an answer; it is an editorial characterization, not a comparative test result. Current plan prices were not established by the sources consulted here.
Grok for X-related conversations
TechRadar’s June 2026 guide describes Grok as connected to X and real-time online conversations. Treat that as the guide’s use-case description, not evidence of a universal advantage or independently measured performance. Current plan prices were not established by the sources consulted here.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The September 2026 comparison did not run a shared benchmark. Its recommendations distinguish workflows, but do not establish that one assistant is best across writing, research, coding, or productivity. The June 2026 TechRadar guide adds editorial descriptions of Perplexity and Grok; it likewise does not provide a common controlled ranking in the material considered here.
A March 26, 2026 arXiv preprint by Moiz Sadiq Awan, Muhammad Haris Noor, and Muhammad Salman Munaf surveyed 388 active AI chat users. Its quantitative second-wave analyses used 237 respondents. In that sample, more than 80% used two or more platforms, and satisfaction ratings for Claude, ChatGPT, and DeepSeek were statistically indistinguishable. Recruitment through technology-focused online communities and professional networks makes this a convenience sample of engaged users, not a representative survey of all consumers. The findings are useful context for the possibility of using more than one assistant, not a population-wide verdict on which one to choose.

Check plan details before subscribing
Plan names, features, usage limits, prices, and availability can change. The vendor pages below are the appropriate places to verify current terms; any price comparison should specify region and billing cadence and account for bundled services.
The Microsoft link is specifically a business pricing page, not a full consumer price comparison. For Perplexity and Grok, the sources used for this comparison do not establish current official plan terms or prices.
So, which should you try first?
Match your first trial to your most frequent task: broad daily work suggests ChatGPT; long-document work suggests Claude; Google-centered work suggests Gemini; Office and Teams workflows suggest Microsoft 365 Copilot; and research that benefits from source links suggests Perplexity. Consider Grok if X-related, real-time conversations are central to your use. These are workflow-based starting points drawn from editorial descriptions, not test winners. If your work spans several needs, the survey evidence suggests that using multiple platforms is common among the engaged users it sampled, though it does not show that every reader needs more than one.
