If you want an AI assistant on Windows without using Copilot, the best choice depends on what you want it to do: Gemini and ChatGPT offer desktop chat windows, Claude Desktop adds optional connections to other apps, Perplexity Personal Computer is designed to work across approved files and Microsoft apps, and Ollama or LM Studio let you run open models locally. These are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable versions of the same assistant.

Which Windows AI assistant should you choose?

Your priority Consider What to know
A desktop chat app for general questions and everyday tasks Google Gemini or ChatGPT Both have documented Windows desktop experiences and shortcut-accessible windows. Compare their system requirements and the features available in their Windows apps.
Claude in a desktop workflow Claude Desktop Anthropic describes the desktop app as a beta feature and documents extensions that can connect to selected apps and local resources.
Work across files and Microsoft apps Perplexity Personal Computer for Windows Perplexity describes an agent for approved folders and files and Microsoft apps, but says it is rolling out to Pro and Max subscribers.
Run open models on your own PC Ollama or LM Studio These are local-model options, not hosted chat services with identical capabilities. Performance depends on your hardware and the model you choose.

Desktop chat apps: Gemini and ChatGPT

Google Gemini

Google documents a Gemini desktop app for Windows 10 or later. Its listed requirements are at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of available disk space, and a stable internet connection. You can open it with Alt+Space. Google lists tasks including quick answers, drafting, summarizing documents or web pages, brainstorming, coding help, and image analysis. Feature availability may vary by account or region; Google’s feature list does not establish that every capability is available to every user. ChatGPT for Windows

OpenAI specifies Windows 10, version 17763.0 or higher, on x64 or arm64. The Microsoft Store app includes a companion window for asking questions, uploading files, generating an image, or starting a conversation; when the app is open, Alt+Space opens that window. OpenAI cautions that the Windows app may not include every feature available on the web or macOS. Its help page describes the early app as available to Plus, Team, Edu, and Enterprise plans; check the page for current eligibility. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Windows app guidance.

Desktop extensions and cross-app workflows

Claude Desktop

Anthropic lists Windows 10 or higher as a requirement and describes Claude Desktop as a beta feature. Its desktop extensions can connect Claude with local files, calendars, email, and messaging apps; Anthropic also describes a curated directory and security controls. Check the current app and extension details to confirm that the integrations you need are available. Anthropic’s Claude Desktop installation and extension information.

Perplexity Personal Computer for Windows

Perplexity describes Personal Computer as a desktop agent that can work with approved folders and files, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, voice, connected apps, and its Comet browser. The company says it is rolling out in the Windows app to Pro and Max subscribers. That makes it a possible fit if you want an assistant to work across files and apps, rather than just answer in a chat window—but neither universal availability nor unrestricted access is established by that description. Local AI models: Ollama and LM Studio

If running open models locally matters more than using a hosted assistant, consider Ollama or LM Studio. Setup and capabilities differ from a ready-to-use cloud assistant: you select models, and the experience depends on your PC as well as the software.

Ollama

Ollama provides a Windows installer and says it can run open models locally or through its cloud. It cautions that local speed depends on hardware and that large models can be slow without a strong GPU. Ollama for Windows.

How to make the choice

  • Check your Windows version and hardware: Gemini specifies memory, disk, and internet requirements; ChatGPT and Claude specify Windows versions, and ChatGPT also specifies supported architectures.
  • Match the app to your workflow: Compare the tasks each vendor documents—such as drafting, image input, file upload, extensions, or work across Microsoft apps—rather than assuming every assistant supports the same actions.
  • Confirm access before you switch: ChatGPT’s Windows app may have fewer features than its web or macOS versions, Claude Desktop is described as beta, and Perplexity says its Windows agent is rolling out to particular subscriber tiers.
  • Decide whether local operation is a priority: Ollama and LM Studio offer a path to open models on your PC, but local performance varies with the hardware and model.
