You can use AI assistants on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence off. Siri Classic remains Apple’s built-in option, while ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are available as standalone apps. The best fit depends on whether you want voice chat, photo or document input, or connections to services you already use—not on a measured head-to-head ranking.
What changes when you turn off Apple Intelligence?
Turning off Apple Intelligence does not automatically mean turning off Siri. Apple’s current iOS 27 guide describes a choice to switch from Siri AI to Siri Classic. Its iOS 26 guidance documents standard Siri and Type to Siri through Accessibility when Apple Intelligence is off. For iOS 26, Apple says Siri needs an internet connection and can be activated by voice or a button; Type to Siri is an Accessibility option when Apple Intelligence is not enabled. Siri Classic is the built-in choice for basic assistant tasks, not a proven substitute for every feature of a standalone chatbot. Apple describes Siri as “an intelligent assistant that’s built into your iPhone to help you get answers, find what you need, and get things done.”

ChatGPT: broad multimodal use in a separate app
OpenAI’s official App Store listing describes the ChatGPT iPhone and iPad app as supporting voice conversations, image generation, and photo uploads. OpenAI’s Voice help documentation says a conversation can move between voice and text. It identifies Live, Advanced, and Standard voice modes, while noting that availability and capabilities depend on factors such as plan, workspace settings, region, app version, and parental controls.
This makes ChatGPT worth comparing if you want one standalone app for spoken conversation and image-related tasks. Do not assume every listed feature appears for every account. The listing and voice details can change; the App Store description was consulted on 2026-10-04.

The ChatGPT app is not the Siri extension
You can open and use the ChatGPT app without enabling Apple’s ChatGPT extension. The extension is a separate Apple Intelligence integration for Siri and related requests. Apple’s setup guide says requests and attachments sent through it go to ChatGPT, along with limited request context; it distinguishes logged-out from signed-in behavior and provides a control to turn the extension off. Review Apple’s current ChatGPT extension settings and privacy guidance if you use that route. Those details apply to the Apple extension, not automatically to direct use of the ChatGPT app or other assistants.
Claude: consider it for documents, images, and voice
Anthropic’s App Store listing describes Claude for iPhone and iPad, including analysis of photos, PDFs, and screenshots, as well as a voice-assistant mode. Anthropic’s help page calls voice mode beta and explains that you can switch between spoken and text conversation in the same chat.

Anthropic says paid users can access certain Google Docs, Calendar, Gmail, and web-search functions through voice. Treat that as a limited, account-dependent integration rather than general control of iPhone apps. Claude may suit workflows centered on writing or reviewing supplied documents and images, but the official feature descriptions do not establish that it outperforms the other options.

Google’s Gemini Apps Help page specifically covers iPhone and iPad. It documents help with writing and brainstorming, summaries or quick information from Gmail or Google Drive, image generation, and interaction through text, voice, images, or camera photos. It also describes planning with Google Maps and Google Flights.
Google cautions that some features formerly available through Google Assistant may not be available in every language or country. Features may also be missing for supervised, work, or school accounts. If you use Google’s services, Gemini is worth comparing for those documented workflows, but do not assume every Google Assistant action transfers to iOS Gemini.

If you mainly want an assistant already on the phone, keep Siri available while Apple Intelligence is off. Apple’s iOS 27 guidance describes switching from Siri AI to Siri Classic; its iOS 26 guide also documents ordinary voice or button activation and Type to Siri under Accessibility when Apple Intelligence is disabled. Siri’s options and settings vary by version, and Apple says it needs an internet connection.
How to choose for your day-to-day tasks
- Want voice and image tools in one standalone app? Compare ChatGPT’s documented voice, photo-upload, and image-generation features with the availability shown for your account.
- Often review PDFs, screenshots, or photos? Claude’s official listing specifically describes analysis of those materials; confirm app and account access before making it part of a workflow.
- Use Gmail, Drive, Maps, or Flights? Gemini documents selected Google-related workflows, subject to country, language, and account limits.
- Prefer built-in access for basic assistant tasks? Siri Classic avoids installing another assistant app, with features dependent on iOS version.
- Want ChatGPT through Siri? That uses Apple’s optional extension, which is distinct from opening the ChatGPT app and has its own settings and data handling.
Before settling on an app, check its current iOS requirement, regional availability, language support, account eligibility, and plan limits. Features can also change through product rollouts; a listing or help page describes documented support, not a guarantee that the same controls appear for every reader.
