For a large-screen Android option, Samsung’s Galaxy A36 5G is a documented candidate: it has a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display and a 5,000 mAh typical battery. Apple’s iPhone 16e is a smaller-screen iOS alternative with a 6.1-inch OLED display. Neither can be called the best-value or most comfortable choice without current local prices and independent long-reading tests, so use screen size, handling comfort, and your budget to decide.
Which phones are worth considering?
Samsung Galaxy A36 5G: a larger Android screen
Samsung specifies a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. Its 1,200-nit brightness figure applies in High Brightness Mode; it does not mean the display continuously operates at that level. Samsung also lists a 5,000 mAh typical battery. These are specifications, not independent findings about reading comfort or eye strain. Samsung’s Galaxy A36 5G specifications

Apple iPhone 16e: a smaller iOS option
Apple specifies a 6.1-inch OLED display and USB-C. Apple says the iPhone 16e offers up to six hours longer battery life than iPhone 11 and up to 12 hours longer than all generations of iPhone SE. Those are Apple’s comparisons with older iPhones, not a reading-session test or a direct comparison with the Galaxy A36 5G. Apple’s iPhone 16e announcement

A larger display can make text easier to view at a larger size, but it can also be harder to hold for a long time. Screen size and panel type are different considerations: compare the actual dimensions and try your preferred font size on the phone if you can. Comfort is personal, and the available sources do not establish which model is easier on the eyes.

- Consider prolonged handling. Check the phone’s weight and how securely and comfortably you can hold it. The cited specifications do not provide a comparative long-session comfort assessment.
- Check software support and controls. Confirm the model’s support period and the settings you use, such as dark theme, Night Light or equivalent warm-tone options, and refresh-rate controls.
What the battery claims do—and do not—tell you
Samsung advertises up to 29 hours of video playback for the Galaxy A36 5G. Samsung says UX Connect Research independently assessed this estimate in the UK from January 16–27, 2025, using pre-release devices with default settings on LTE and 5G Sub6; the assessment did not use 5G mmWave. Samsung cautions that actual results vary. Video playback under those conditions is not the same as reading with a particular app, brightness level, network connection, or screen setting. Apple’s iPhone 16e battery statement is a comparison against specified older iPhone models, rather than a published reading-endurance measurement. The available figures therefore do not support a direct battery-life ranking between these two phones for long reading sessions.

Try warm tones or dark theme in the evening
A scheduled Night Light or a warm-tone display setting may suit evening use. Dark theme is another option when your reading app supports it; Motorola notes that not all apps support dark theme. Samsung says dark mode may support battery efficiency on OLED displays, but does not quantify the saving, so do not assume a specific battery-life improvement. Verify refresh-rate and flicker controls on the exact model
Do not infer refresh-rate or flicker behavior from a manufacturer’s other phones. Motorola’s UK guidance marks refresh-rate and flicker-prevention settings as unavailable on some models, and the cited sources provide no measured flicker values for the Galaxy A36 5G or iPhone 16e. Check the precise model’s settings and seek reliable measurements if flicker is a concern. Motorola display-settings guidance
