If you’re considering a move from ADP RUN, compare providers against your actual payroll, tax, support, HR, and integration needs—not a universal “best” ranking. Gusto, QuickBooks Workforce, Paychex Flex, OnPay, SurePayroll, and Rippling are candidates to investigate, but the available vendor information does not establish an independent head-to-head winner. Get an itemized quote and confirm what each plan covers before choosing.
How to choose an ADP alternative
Start with the work you need the service to handle, then compare the exact plans and quotes. ADP’s guide recommends weighing payroll confidence, ease of use, support, value, and whether the service can adapt as a business changes. Because that guide is published by ADP, treat its descriptions of ADP and competitors as vendor claims rather than independent evaluations. ADP’s comparison of ADP and Gusto and its 2026 small-business provider guide are useful starting points, not a verified ranking.

- Payroll and taxes: Ask which calculations, forms, filings, and payments the provider handles, and what remains your responsibility. Confirm coverage for the states and worker types you have.
- HR, benefits, and time: Identify the functions you need now and which are included versus sold as add-ons.
- Support and migration: Ask how onboarding works, whether migration help is included, when a person is available, and whether support changes by plan.
- Integrations and growth: Verify that your accounting and time systems connect on the quoted plan, and ask how the service handles expansion or multi-state payroll.
- Total cost: Compare the price for your employee count and selected services, including add-ons and support—not a starting price alone.
Shortlist: which providers to investigate
These are options to compare by buyer situation, not ranked recommendations. Most details below come from ADP’s vendor-authored 2026 guide; Gusto’s features are also described on its own product pages. Confirm current terms directly with each provider.

What Gusto’s published offer includes
Gusto’s own pricing page describes Simple, Plus, and Premium plans. It says plans include unlimited payroll runs, are month-to-month, bill for active employees, and allow plan upgrades or downgrades. It also lists paid options such as next-day, instant, and same-day pay, time and attendance, and priority support. Fees and plan details can change, so use the live pricing page for a quote rather than relying on an old price.

How to compare quotes with ADP RUN
ADP’s 2026 guide says RUN pricing depends on business size, payroll needs, and selected services, and that buyers need to request a quote. It describes payroll, tax filing, onboarding, mobile access, benefits and insurance options, and integrations; confirm the specific services and terms in your proposal. ADP says its guide is accurate as of July 22, 2026; product packaging and availability may change.

- Define your requirements. List employee count, work states, pay schedules, worker types, tax tasks, HR needs, and the accounting or time tools you use.
- Request equivalent quotes. Ask each provider to price the same headcount and requirements. Have it separate base service, required add-ons, support, and implementation or migration charges.
- Map responsibility for taxes. Get a clear answer about who calculates, files, and pays each tax, how exceptions are handled, and what deadlines or approvals remain yours.
- Verify plan-level details. Check that the quoted tier includes the needed features, integrations, support access, and state coverage—not merely that the vendor offers them somewhere in its product line.
- Plan the transition. Ask what records transfer, what you must provide, when the first payroll can run, and who will help validate opening balances and tax details.
Switching from ADP: verify the transition plan
Gusto says it can help transfer payroll data, while ADP says customers can switch at any time of year. Those are provider statements, not guarantees that a particular migration will be seamless. Before signing, get the proposed timeline and division of responsibilities in writing. Clarify how the changeover will handle year-to-date payroll information, employee records, tax filings, and any payroll that falls near the transition date.
What vendor claims can—and can’t—tell you
ADP’s guide reports that 96% of respondents said running payroll with ADP was easy, nine in ten said switching to ADP was quick, and three out of four said they spent 15 minutes or less running payroll. ADP says these figures come from an internal survey of 1,281 RUN Powered by ADP customers. They describe surveyed ADP customers, not an independent comparison with alternatives. The guide also includes selected customer testimonials; those accounts should not be treated as typical results.
