The best ad blocker depends on where you want ads blocked. For iPhone, start with a Safari content blocker or Firefox’s optional built-in blocker. On Android, AdGuard Content Blocker is limited to Samsung Internet and Yandex Browser; AdGuard’s separate Android app offers broader browser and app filtering but is not available through Google Play. None of these options is established here as a universal winner, and no comparable independent test supports an effectiveness ranking.

How do you block ads on an iPhone?
Enable an extension in Safari
- In Safari, open the Manage Extensions flow to find extensions in the App Store, as described in Apple’s iPhone guide.
- Install a content-blocking extension, then enable it in Settings. The exact controls depend on the extension and iOS version.
- If a website stops working or looks wrong, turn the extension off for that individual website. Apple documents per-site extension controls.
Safari extensions are the appropriate choice when you want to filter Safari. They do not automatically extend ad blocking to other iPhone apps.

Use Firefox’s optional blocker
Mozilla says Firefox for iOS includes an EasyList-based blocker that uses Apple’s WebKit Content Blocker technology. It is off by default and may not yet appear for every user during its progressive rollout. Mozilla also says remote improvements must be enabled. Consult Mozilla’s support instructions for availability and controls in your version.
Its coverage has defined limits: search-result ads and sponsored content on Firefox Home or New Tab are excluded, and some website ads may remain. It is therefore an option for reducing many third-party ads, not a promise of ad-free browsing.
What works on Android?
Choose between a browser-limited blocker and broader filtering
AdGuard’s Content Blocker is for Samsung Internet and Yandex Browser. If you use a different browser, or want filtering in apps as well as browsers, AdGuard describes its separate Android app as the broader option. Confirm that the product supports your exact browser and Android version before installing; the available documentation does not establish compatibility for every named blocker on every browser.

Understand the installation route
AdGuard says Google Play policy prevents publication of its full-fledged Android blocker. Its support page explains other app-store and manual installation routes. Use the vendor’s current instructions rather than assuming this app is a standard Play Store download, and review the installation prompts before granting permissions.
Consider Firefox extensions
Mozilla describes Firefox for Android as part of its ecosystem supporting ad-blocking and privacy extensions. That does not establish that a particular blocker works with every current Firefox version or Android device. Can a phone ad blocker block ads in apps as well as websites?
It depends on the product’s scope. A Safari content blocker or an iOS Firefox feature applies to that browser; it is not system-wide iPhone app filtering. On Android, AdGuard distinguishes its browser-limited Content Blocker from its separate app, which it says can filter browsers and apps and block by domain. Treat “ad blocker” as a description of a particular product and coverage area, not a guarantee that every app, browser, or ad format will be filtered.

- Exact browser support: Confirm the blocker supports your phone, operating system, and browser version. Support can differ between an extension, a browser feature, and a separate app.
- Coverage: Decide whether browser-only filtering is enough or whether you want the broader app filtering described for AdGuard’s Android app.
- Known exclusions: Read the vendor’s limitations. For example, Mozilla lists search ads and sponsored Firefox Home or New Tab content among the exclusions for its iOS feature.
- Controls: Prefer a setup you can disable when a site misbehaves. Apple documents per-website extension controls for Safari.
- Distribution and terms: Check the installation source, current price, and privacy policy directly with the provider. The documented feature requirements here do not establish a complete current price comparison.
Official platform and vendor documentation establishes how these features work, but it does not provide an independent, comparable effectiveness test. A numerical ranking would therefore overstate what is known.
