Best overall for flexible desktop recording: OBS Studio. Choose Camtasia if you want to capture and edit tutorials in one product, or NVIDIA ShadowPlay if your priority is gameplay on a compatible NVIDIA system. No controlled head-to-head test in the available evidence establishes a universal performance winner, and “4K” alone does not guarantee a native 4K recording or smooth 60 fps capture.
What “4K” means for screen recording
Check the exact resolution you need before choosing software. TechSmith distinguishes Ultra HD (UHD), at 3,840×2,160 pixels, from DCI 4K, at 4,096×2,160. Its Camtasia guidance describes recording up to UHD on capable systems; that does not establish support for DCI 4K in every recorder or workflow. See TechSmith’s 4K content guidance.

A recording exported at 3,840×2,160 is not necessarily native 4K capture: enlarging a lower-resolution source does not add captured detail. For a genuine 4K/60 workflow, the display, content refresh rate, capture settings, encoder and graphics hardware all matter.
Which 4K screen recorder fits your workflow?
| Software | Best fit | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Flexible desktop or window capture and streaming across major desktop systems; can also capture an external source through a capture device. | System requirements are not performance guarantees. Encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity and GPU routing affect whether recording works well. OBS’s external-device HDR guidance is Windows-specific and requires 10-bit support such as P010. |
| Camtasia | Tutorials and training where screen capture and editing in the same product are useful. | TechSmith’s documented 4K/60 path requires specific capture settings, a 4K/60 Hz-or-higher display and a discrete GPU. Its cited UHD maximum is 3,840×2,160. |
| NVIDIA ShadowPlay | Gameplay recording and instant replay on compatible NVIDIA systems. | NVIDIA’s high-resolution figures are product claims for game capture, not evidence that ShadowPlay is a general-purpose editing suite. |
Can OBS record in 4K?
OBS is the most flexible starting point of these three for desktop capture, but its suitability depends on your computer and setup. The OBS Project lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 Big Sur or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland. Its system-requirements page, dated 2021-08-25, warns that meeting those requirements does not guarantee recording capability. OBS says CPU needs vary considerably with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity; use its Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point rather than treating minimum requirements as a promise. Check GPU routing on a Windows laptop
On Windows 10 (version 1809 and later) and Windows 11 systems with multiple GPUs, OBS says the application can run on only one GPU at a time. If a game runs on the discrete GPU while OBS runs on integrated graphics, Game Capture may fail; performance problems can also occur. Check that OBS and the game are routed appropriately using OBS’s GPU Selection Guide.
When HDR and an external capture card matter
A capture card is relevant when recording an external HDMI source, such as a console—not when capturing the computer’s own desktop. For Windows HDR capture from an external device, OBS’s 2022-08-02 guidance requires the device to support a 10-bit format such as P010. OBS lists Elgato 4K X, Elgato 4K Pro and other devices as tested and known to work for this HDR capture workflow. Keep firmware and drivers current; this compatibility note is not a blanket endorsement for every card or setup. OBS’s HDR capture-device guidance.

- Set the recorder’s maximum frame rate to 60 FPS.
- Select H.264 as the encoder.
- Make sure the screen content refreshes at 60 FPS or higher.
- Use a 4K display running at 60 Hz or higher.
- Ensure a discrete GPU powers the recorded monitor, with current graphics drivers.
TechSmith recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or higher for this path; this is a vendor recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth recording in every scene. Its separate guidance, updated 2026-04-08, says Camtasia Recorder can record up to UHD (3,840×2,160) on capable systems and recommends a maximum editor canvas of that same resolution. A UHD display and locally stored source media are recommended; an SSD can help. Lower-powered computers may have choppy playback or slow editing. TechSmith’s 4K/60 guidance.

When NVIDIA ShadowPlay is the better choice
For gameplay on an NVIDIA system, ShadowPlay offers DVR-style Instant Replay that saves the last 30 seconds, as well as manual recording. NVIDIA says manual capture can reach 8K HDR at 30 FPS or 4K HDR at 120 FPS “with minimal impact to performance”; treat that as NVIDIA’s claim for its gaming capture feature, not as an independent comparison or a promise for every PC and game. NVIDIA also says RTX 40-series GPU owners can record AV1. Its support answer, updated 2025-08-06, lists 2160p/4K and 4320p/8K among supported resolutions. - Turn Your Camera into a Pro Webcam: Connect your DSLR or mirrorless camera to any computer and go live in stunning quality
- Stunning quality: Stream and record in 1080p60 or even 4K60 for razor-sharp detail (Requires a compatible camera and the latest Cam Link 4K model)
- Connect More Than Just Cameras: Use a camcorder, action cam, or even your iPhone to level up your content
- No Lag, No Delays: Ultra-low latency keeps your video and audio perfectly in sync, just like it should be
- Your iPad, Now a Pro Field Monitor: Preview your shots in real time on an iPad with USB-C
- A 4K source: Use a display or input that actually supplies the resolution you want to record; exporting a lower-resolution capture at UHD does not make it native 4K.
- A 60 Hz-or-faster display and 60 FPS content: These are part of TechSmith’s documented Camtasia 4K/60 conditions.
- Compatible encoding and graphics: Camtasia’s documented route specifies H.264 and a discrete GPU; OBS performance varies with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity.
- Enough local storage and editing capacity: TechSmith recommends local source storage and says an SSD can help, while warning that lower-powered systems may play back or edit 4K less smoothly.
- Correct GPU assignment: On multi-GPU Windows systems, check that OBS and a game are not split across GPUs in a way that prevents Game Capture.
- For external HDR capture, a compatible 10-bit device: OBS’s cited Windows workflow requires a format such as P010 and current device firmware and drivers.
Common 4K recording problems and fixes
- Game Capture shows a blank screen on a laptop: OBS and the game may be using different GPUs. Follow OBS’s GPU selection guidance and check Windows GPU routing.
- Recording is choppy or the system struggles: A machine meeting OBS’s baseline requirements may still be insufficient for the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene. Try OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard, then reassess capture settings and workload.
- Camtasia recording is not 4K/60: Confirm 60 FPS capture, H.264, a 4K display at 60 Hz or higher, content refreshing at 60 FPS or more, and a discrete GPU powering that display.
- External HDR capture fails or loses HDR: Confirm that the capture device supports a 10-bit format such as P010, update firmware and drivers, and note that OBS’s cited external-device HDR instructions apply to Windows.
- The export says 4K but the capture looks soft: Check the source and capture resolution. Upscaling a lower-resolution recording cannot restore detail that was not captured.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting OBS output to 3,840×2,160 make a lower-resolution screen recording true 4K?
No. An output setting can upscale the recording; it cannot add detail that was not captured from the source.
Does ShadowPlay’s 4K HDR at 120 FPS claim apply to every screen-recording use?
No. NVIDIA presents it as a manual game-recording capability, not a general guarantee for desktop capture or every system.
