There is no single best 3D printer filament: the right choice depends on what the part must withstand and what your printer can safely handle. PLA is a practical starting point for models and prototypes; PETG suits many functional parts; ASA is worth considering outdoors; and ABS and nylon serve more demanding applications when you can manage their printing requirements.
How to choose a 3D printer filament
Start with the part’s real operating conditions, then check whether your printer, build surface, and available setup support the material. A filament’s advertised properties do not help if the finished part will face more heat, stress, chemicals, or sunlight than it can tolerate—or if your printer cannot reliably print it.

- Use: Is the print decorative, a prototype, or a working part such as a holder or clamp?
- Strength and heat: Consider the mechanical loads and temperatures the part will experience. PLA is not the default for heat- or stress-exposed parts.
- Outdoor exposure: For UV and temperature resistance, consider ASA rather than choosing solely by printability.
- Printing difficulty: Warping, stringing, support removal, and high temperature requirements can make a material less convenient.
- Moisture: Nylon absorbs moisture and needs careful drying and storage.
- Hardware and surface: Confirm nozzle and bed temperature limits, build-sheet compatibility, and whether an enclosure or hardened nozzle is needed.
Prusa’s material guide compares properties, temperatures, hardware, and surfaces across material types, but its recommendations apply to its covered printer and material combinations. Check the current profile from the filament maker and the limits and guidance for your own printer.

| Material | Good fit | Main tradeoffs | Setup considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | Detailed models, figures, simple toys, and quick prototypes without demanding heat, chemical, or mechanical resistance | Not suited to every heat- or stress-exposed application | Generally easy to print with little significant warping; use settings for your exact printer and filament |
| PETG | Many functional parts, including holders and clamps, where toughness, layer adhesion, and moderate temperature resistance matter | Can string, and supports can be difficult to remove | Check build-sheet compatibility: PETG can damage smooth PEI |
| ASA | Outdoor technical parts that need UV and temperature resistance | Significant warping, high printing temperatures, and potential fumes | Larger parts may need an enclosure; check ventilation and printer guidance |
| ABS | Mechanically stressed parts that need tenacity and temperature resistance | Significant warping and fumes | Requires attention to surface preparation and printer setup; it is not simply an upgrade over PLA |
| Nylon (polyamide) | Technical parts where mechanical and thermal resistance, abrasion resistance, and strong layer adhesion are useful | Difficult to print and hygroscopic | Dry before printing; store airtight with desiccant and confirm printer capability |
| Wood- or metal-filled composites | Prints chosen for their appearance; these filaments are often based on PLA or PETG | Additives can increase clogging risk | Metal-filled filament requires a hardened nozzle |
PLA: the easy starting point for models and prototypes
PLA is a sensible first choice for detailed models, figures, simple toys, and quick prototypes when the part does not need high mechanical, chemical, or temperature resistance. Prusa describes it as easy and inexpensive to print and says it is not prone to significant warping. That makes it convenient, not universally suitable: choose another material if the part’s operating conditions demand more.

For a supported Prusa printer, Prusa’s example settings are 215 °C nozzle for the first layer, 210 °C for later layers, and a 60 °C bed. These are manufacturer-specific examples, not universal PLA settings. Check Prusa’s material guidance alongside your own printer and filament maker’s current recommendations.
PETG: a practical choice for many functional parts
PETG is worth considering for parts such as holders and clamps when toughness, layer adhesion, and moderate temperature resistance matter. Prusa describes it as inexpensive and easy to print, but flags two common annoyances: stringing and supports that can be hard to remove.

Build-surface choice matters. Prusa warns that PETG can damage smooth PEI, so confirm compatibility with your exact sheet before printing. For its covered setup, Prusa’s example is 230 °C nozzle for the first layer, 240 °C for later layers, and an 85–90 °C bed. Use the filament maker’s and printer maker’s current settings for your own equipment. See Prusa’s PETG guidance.

ASA is a candidate for outdoor parts that need UV and temperature resistance. The tradeoff is a more demanding print: Prusa notes significant warping, high printing temperatures, and potential fumes. Larger parts may need an enclosure. Consider your printer’s setup and the room’s ventilation before choosing it.

- Cost-Effective Filament Bundle: Get 2 "1kg" spools of PLA filament for the price of 1 with classic black and white color
- Smooth and Stable Printing: Patented design and manufacturing process ensures smooth, clog-free printing
- Durable and Strong: Improved toughness and strength for printing functional parts
- Compatible with Most Printers: Works with 99% of FDM and FFF 3D printers with heated beds
- Renewable Material: Made from starch derived from renewable plant resources for environmental friendliness
Prusa recommends a 260 °C nozzle and a 105–110 °C bed for its covered setup. Those values are not universal; follow the current instructions for your printer and filament. Read Prusa’s ASA guidance.
ABS: for demanding parts when you can manage the print
ABS can suit mechanically stressed parts that need tenacity and temperature resistance, but significant warping and fumes make it a less straightforward choice. It is not simply a tougher, drop-in replacement for PLA: the part’s needs and the printer’s setup both matter.

For its covered printer family, Prusa gives 255 °C for the nozzle and 100 °C for the bed, and advises appropriate surface preparation. Treat these as examples for that setup, not general ABS settings. Check Prusa’s ABS recommendations and your equipment’s guidance.
Nylon: capable, but demanding and moisture-sensitive
Nylon, also called polyamide, offers mechanical and thermal resistance, abrasion resistance, and strong layer adhesion for technical parts. Printing it is difficult, and it absorbs moisture: Prusa recommends drying it before printing and storing it airtight with desiccant.

Prusa’s example settings are 285 °C nozzle and 110 °C bed for its covered setup. Confirm your printer can support the required temperatures, and follow the filament maker’s drying instructions rather than treating one setting as suitable for every nylon product. See Prusa’s nylon guidance.
Filled composites: prioritize appearance and nozzle compatibility
Wood- or metal-powder-filled filaments are often based on PLA or PETG and are commonly selected for appearance. Their additives can raise clogging risk; metal-filled filament requires a hardened nozzle. Check the filament’s composition and the printer maker’s nozzle guidance before loading it. Prusa’s material guide covers material and hardware considerations.
Quick Recap
Before you print
- Define the job: Identify whether the part is decorative, functional, exposed to sunlight, or subject to heat or mechanical stress.
- Choose a material against those demands: Use the comparison above as a shortlist, not a universal ranking.
- Check your specific setup: Verify the filament’s current profile, printer temperature limits, bed-sheet compatibility, and any enclosure or hardened-nozzle requirement.
- Prepare the filament if needed: For nylon, follow the maker’s drying instructions and store it airtight with desiccant.
- Use the makers’ current settings: Prusa’s temperatures in this guide are examples for its covered printer/material combinations, not default settings for all printers.
