What to check before choosing a 2-in-1 for creatives
1. Drawing posture and pen compatibility
A detachable tablet can feel more natural when held or positioned for direct drawing, while a convertible keeps the keyboard attached and can fold into a tablet-like mode. Try to assess the screen angle and stability in the posture you actually use: a stand or hinge that works for sketching may not be comfortable for hours of detailed work.

Do not assume a stylus works just because a laptop has a touchscreen. Check the exact generation and configuration, then verify supported pen features in the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation. Microsoft lists 4,096 pressure points for current Surface Pro pen support and provides model-specific feature information in its compatibility chart. Pressure-point specifications do not, on their own, tell you how a pen feels or establish latency, tilt behavior or performance in your drawing app.

3. Performance for your applications and projects
Processor names alone are not enough to predict how a device will handle a particular illustration, design or editing workload. 5. Ports, portability and complete setup cost
A portable device can still require adapters or a different desk setup. Check the ports against your monitor, storage and other peripherals, and consider whether the screen size and tablet posture are practical to carry and use. For a detachable, add the keyboard and pen to your budget if you need them: Microsoft says the Surface Slim Pen and Surface Keyboard are sold separately. Some 13-inch keyboard variants store and charge the pen. Confirm the bundle and accessory compatibility for your region and exact SKU before comparing prices.

- Decide on the form factor. Pick a detachable for a tablet-first drawing setup or a 360-degree convertible if you want a standard laptop keyboard that folds behind the display.
- Identify the exact configuration. Record the screen panel, resolution, refresh rate, processor, memory and ports for the model you are considering. Do not rely on a family name when configurations differ.
- Verify pen support for that configuration. Check the manufacturer compatibility page for the exact generation and the features you need; then consider how pressure, tilt and latency matter in your software.
- Price the full setup. Include the pen, keyboard, storage and any adapters you expect to need. For Surface Pro, account for the separately sold pen and keyboard.
- Use review findings for the question they answer. A controlled battery test can help compare reported endurance; an overall roundup ranking can identify a candidate. Neither establishes the best pen experience for your own work.
Current recommendations are not permanent rankings
RTINGS’ roundup, updated October 1, 2026, names the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026) best overall and the Surface Pro 13 12th Edition as an upper-mid-range tablet-style pick. Tom’s Guide highlights a different set of products and reports its own battery test results. These are editorial judgments with different criteria and dates, so use them to build a shortlist rather than treating them as interchangeable verdicts.
