Best 120Hz TVs: Picks for Gaming, Bright Rooms, and Better Processing

Compare reviewed 120Hz TV candidates and learn why HDMI input support, port count, room lighting, and processing matter as much as refresh rate.

The best 120Hz TV depends on more than its refresh-rate label: check whether the exact HDMI input accepts 4K at 120Hz, how many full-bandwidth ports you need, and how the screen performs in your room. The Roku Pro Series 2025 is a gaming-focused Mini LED candidate; Sony’s BRAVIA 9 and BRAVIA 7 and Samsung’s QN95D are useful premium comparison options. These picks reflect specific RTINGS reviews and comparisons, not a comprehensive ranking of every TV on the market.

Which 120Hz TV fits your use?

Use these models as starting points, not universal winners. The cited evidence covers particular reviews and model-to-model comparisons; it does not establish current prices, stock, or a market-wide value leader. Confirm the size and regional model you intend to buy.

Roku Pro Series 2025: gaming-focused Mini LED candidate

RTINGS reviewed the 65-inch version and reports two HDMI 2.1-bandwidth ports that support 4K/120Hz gaming with VRR. Its review also notes strong SDR brightness and color performance, alongside poor handling of direct reflections, narrow viewing angles, and some motion blur in fast sports and games. The line is listed in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes, so verify that the review’s findings and port specifications apply to your exact version. Read RTINGS’ Roku Pro Series 2025 review.

Sony BRAVIA 9: premium 120Hz comparison option

The cited comparison identifies a native 120Hz refresh rate and two HDMI 2.1 ports supporting up to 4K/120Hz. In that comparison, RTINGS favors the Sony overall across the dimensions it evaluated, while noting advantages for the Samsung QN95D in viewing angle and HDR gradient handling. That conclusion applies to those two models and comparison criteria; it is not a current price or value ranking. See the BRAVIA 9 and QN95D comparison.

Samsung QN95D: more high-refresh inputs

The cited comparisons identify a native 144Hz refresh rate and four HDMI 2.1 ports capable of up to 4K/144Hz. Compared with the BRAVIA 7, the QN95D is described as better at handling reflections, while the Sony is more accurate out of the box and better at upscaling and smoothing low-quality content. Choose based on the number of devices you will connect, room lighting, and how much you value processing—not refresh rate alone. See the BRAVIA 7 and QN95D comparison.

Sony BRAVIA 7: 120Hz alternative with processing strengths

The same comparison identifies the BRAVIA 7 as a 120Hz set with two 120Hz HDMI 2.1 inputs. RTINGS describes it as more accurate out of the box, with better upscaling and smoothing for low-quality content than the QN95D. Samsung’s cited advantages are reflection handling and port capacity. That makes the BRAVIA 7 a comparison option for viewers who value processing and accuracy, rather than an automatic choice for every room or setup.

What does “120Hz” actually guarantee?

A TV’s native refresh rate and the signal accepted by a particular input are different specifications. A 120Hz panel does not, by itself, prove that every HDMI port accepts a 4K/120Hz signal. Check the supported input formats for the exact TV and the port you plan to use. RTINGS’ methodology tests supported resolutions, including 4K/120Hz input support. For console gaming, confirm 4K/120Hz support on the chosen HDMI port and check whether that input also supports VRR if you need variable refresh rate. For a PC desktop, 4K/120Hz at 4:4:4 can matter for clear fine text; the graphics source, cable, and TV input must all support the target signal. A high-bandwidth HDMI cable may be needed for a compatible setup, but a cable cannot make an unsupported port accept a signal.

How many HDMI ports should you look for?

Count the devices that need the full signal you want—not just the total number of HDMI sockets. Consoles, a gaming PC, and an AV receiver can quickly compete for high-bandwidth inputs. In the cited comparisons, the BRAVIA 9 has two HDMI 2.1 ports supporting up to 4K/120Hz, while the QN95D has four supporting up to 4K/144Hz. The Roku Pro Series 2025 review reports two HDMI 2.1-bandwidth ports for 4K/120Hz with VRR. BRAVIA 9 and QN95D port comparison · Roku Pro Series 2025 review.

If you route devices through an AV receiver, check that the receiver also supports the resolution, refresh rate, and features you need. Otherwise, the receiver can limit the signal even when the TV and source are compatible.

What else matters besides refresh rate?

  • Room lighting: Strong direct reflections can make a bright screen harder to watch. The Roku review notes weak direct-reflection handling; the BRAVIA 7/QN95D comparison gives Samsung the edge in reflection handling.
  • Seating positions: A narrow viewing angle matters if people often watch from the sides. The Roku review notes narrow angles, while the BRAVIA 9 comparison identifies a wider viewing angle as a Samsung advantage.
  • Streaming and older content: Upscaling and cleanup of low-quality sources can matter more than going beyond 120Hz. The BRAVIA 7 comparison describes Sony as stronger in these areas than the QN95D.
  • Motion in fast content: A high refresh rate does not eliminate all blur. RTINGS reports some motion blur in fast-paced sports and games on the reviewed Roku model.

What to verify before buying

  1. Find the exact model number, size, and regional suffix on the retail listing.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the supported resolution and refresh rate on each HDMI input; do not infer port capability from “120Hz” alone.
  3. Match the port to your source: confirm 4K/120Hz for the console or PC, VRR if needed, and 4:4:4 support for PC text where relevant.
  4. Count the full-capability inputs needed for consoles, PCs, and receivers, and confirm whether your receiver supports the same signal.
  5. Compare reflection handling, viewing angle, and image processing against your room and content habits.

The cited reviews and comparisons do not settle regional SKU differences, current inventory, or 2026 model availability. Verify the exact retail model and its specifications before purchase.
