Berkshire’s Alphabet Stake Grew Nearly Sixfold: What to Know Before Buying

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Berkshire Hathaway’s reported Alphabet share count rose from 17.8 million at the end of 2025 to nearly 106 million at June 30, 2026—roughly sixfold. That is a comparison of dated portfolio snapshots, not proof Greg Abel made the purchases alone or that Berkshire still owns the same number today.

What “sixfold” measures—and what it doesn’t

The clearest basis for the headline is the number of Alphabet shares Berkshire held. The Associated Press reported 17.8 million shares worth $5.6 billion on December 31, 2025. By March 31, 2026, AP reported nearly 58 million shares worth almost $17 billion. Reuters then reported nearly 106 million shares worth about $37.8 billion at June 30, 2026.

Comparing the year-end and June share counts produces a rise of roughly sixfold. The dollar values are different measures: a holding’s market value changes with Alphabet’s share price, while purchase cost refers to what Berkshire paid. Reuters’ June 30 market value of about $37.8 billion is not the same thing as the amount invested.

FinanceBuzz described Berkshire as deploying about $27 billion into Alphabet during 2026. That cost total is not established by the reported share-count snapshots, and the available reporting does not provide a primary-filed transaction breakdown that verifies it. Treat it as FinanceBuzz’s reported figure, not as a confirmed cost or as interchangeable with the June market value.

These are quarter-end snapshots reported after the dates they describe. They do not establish Berkshire’s position on October 3, 2026, or at the time you read this. The share price also continues to move after each snapshot.

Did Greg Abel make the investment alone?

No. Berkshire began buying Alphabet in 2025, while Warren Buffett was still CEO. Buffett said he initiated the original investment. Reuters reported that Abel and Buffett authorized a further $10 billion investment about three months before Abel’s September 2026 interview. Quartz likewise reported that Abel said he proposed a discount and that he and Buffett worked through the amount and terms together.

Reuters reported Abel’s account that Berkshire obtained a 6.5% discount to Alphabet’s share price on the additional investment. That is a reported transaction detail, not an independently verified transaction bridge in the sources available here. The accurate takeaway is that the stake grew substantially during Abel’s CEO tenure, but the reported history does not support presenting every purchase as his decision alone.

Why Berkshire says it bought Alphabet

Abel’s stated rationale combines Berkshire’s experience using AI in its own businesses with Alphabet’s position in the field. In a September 2, 2026 interview, as quoted by Reuters and Quartz, Abel said Berkshire had visibility into how its companies were using AI and the benefits they were getting, and described Google as a significant player.

That is management’s explanation for the investment, not a promise that Alphabet’s AI products will produce returns sufficient to cover their development and infrastructure costs. Berkshire’s familiarity with AI use in its operating companies may inform its judgment, but it does not establish what Alphabet will earn or what price is attractive for an individual investor.

Berkshire’s second AI-related angle: electricity

Berkshire’s interest in AI is not limited to owning Alphabet shares. Data centers require electricity, and Abel has described that demand as an opportunity for Berkshire Hathaway Energy as well as a possible constraint on data-center growth. Reuters reported Abel’s estimate that data centers accounted for about 8% of the Iowa load served by Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2025. That figure describes one utility’s load in one state and year; it is not a forecast of future demand or earnings.

Turning power demand into returns depends on factors such as infrastructure investment, approvals, project schedules and customer protections. The Motley Fool reported that Berkshire’s utility discussions with hyperscalers require arrangements not to harm other customers through higher rates and to benefit them. Those conditions matter: a growing need for electricity does not by itself guarantee that a utility can build projects on schedule or earn attractive returns from them.

Berkshire or Alphabet: which kind of exposure do you want?

Consideration Alphabet Berkshire Hathaway
How the exposure works Direct ownership of Google’s parent company, with exposure to its advertising, Search, Cloud and AI execution. Indirect AI exposure through its Alphabet shares and businesses such as Berkshire Hathaway Energy, alongside a broad group of operating businesses and other investments.
Concentration Your investment is concentrated in one company. Alphabet is one holding within Berkshire’s broader portfolio and conglomerate; Berkshire is not a pure-play AI stock.
What to assess Alphabet’s current valuation, business performance, AI monetization and the capital required to compete. Berkshire’s current valuation, operating businesses, capital allocation and the size and timing of its disclosed investments.
What a reported position tells you Buying Alphabet gives you direct exposure at your own purchase price. A reported Berkshire holding shows what was disclosed for a past reporting date, not necessarily what Berkshire owns now or what price you should pay.

Kiplinger reported that Alphabet represented 9.4% of Berkshire’s U.S. equity portfolio value after the second quarter of 2026, and that Berkshire ended the quarter with about $365 billion in cash. The 9.4% figure is a share of the U.S. equity portfolio—not of Berkshire’s entire company value—and both figures are dated Q2 context, not current October measurements. They illustrate why a sizeable Alphabet position does not turn Berkshire into an Alphabet proxy.

What to check before buying either stock

Berkshire’s purchase can be a reason to examine Alphabet, but it cannot answer whether either security fits your goals or is attractively priced now. Before deciding, work through these checks:

  • Check the latest disclosures. Look for Berkshire’s most recent filings and quarterly reporting, and note the portfolio date each figure covers. Holdings disclosures can lag the underlying transactions, so a reported stake may have changed before it becomes public.
  • Use current company information for valuation. Compare the current share price with current financial results and your own expectations for future performance. The Q2 holding value does not establish an appropriate October entry price, and the cited reports do not establish a current valuation or expected return.
  • Decide how direct your exposure should be. Alphabet concentrates your investment in one company. Berkshire offers a different mix of operating businesses and investments, with Alphabet as one component; neither choice is equivalent to buying a dedicated AI fund.
  • Consider execution and investment costs. For Alphabet, ask whether AI demand can generate returns that justify product development and infrastructure spending. For Berkshire Hathaway Energy, power demand has to translate into approved, timely projects and acceptable returns while respecting customer-rate protections.
  • Do not copy the position size mechanically. Berkshire’s financial resources, portfolio, time horizon and access to transaction terms differ from an individual investor’s. AP has noted that Abel has a shorter public stock-picking record than Buffett and that Berkshire does not comment on every portfolio trade.

What the reported bet can—and cannot—tell an investor

The reported increase is a meaningful sign of Berkshire’s growing exposure to Alphabet, and Abel has publicly connected the decision to Berkshire’s AI experience and Alphabet’s role in the field. But the snapshots do not amount to a current buy signal: they are dated, they do not settle the investment’s present valuation, and they cannot show whether Alphabet’s AI investments will earn adequate returns. Use them as a prompt to assess the businesses and the price today, not as a substitute for that work.
