To benchmark a Ryzen VDS reliably, treat each result as an observation of the guest under a precisely recorded workload—not as proof of the host’s CPU, storage hardware, or guaranteed performance. Run CPU and storage tests separately, repeat them under controlled conditions, and publish the configuration, latency distribution, throughput or IOPS, and run-to-run variation.
What a guest-side VDS benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
A virtual server benchmark measures how that guest performed during the test. Unless the provider supplies host telemetry, it cannot independently identify the physical CPU, establish where or how long a vCPU ran, reveal the host scheduler policy, identify the storage device, or confirm that a slowdown came from another tenant. A displayed CPU model and a provider’s allocation label are useful context, but neither independently verifies the physical host or its scheduling behavior.

Keep interpretations bounded: a changed score may be consistent with scheduling, co-tenancy, frequency behavior, thermal or power policy, virtual CPU placement, guest background work, or ordinary measurement variation. Guest-only results do not distinguish these causes.

#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
- Provider, plan name, region, test date and time, and the plan’s exact public wording about CPU allocation.
- Guest OS and kernel, reported CPU model and topology, vCPU count, and memory allocation.
- For storage tests: filesystem, mount options, target path, and whether the target is a file or device.
- Tool version, full command or job file, workload settings, and any relevant source code or compiler/runtime version for CPU tests.
Use the same test path and file size across repeats. Prefer a disposable file or directory on the filesystem you intend to measure. Do not run destructive raw-device tests on a rented instance unless the device is explicitly disposable and you understand the risk of losing data.
Test CPU performance as a repeatable workload
Keep the workload and conditions fixed
Choose a CPU workload that matches the question you are asking, then hold its implementation, duration, worker-thread count, and other settings constant. Record the exact command or source, compiler or runtime version where applicable, and guest-visible CPU affinity. Run it multiple times without changing the guest configuration. Include a light-load baseline; if you want to examine behavior under contention, run that as a distinct, clearly labeled condition rather than mixing it into the baseline.

Report the runs, not just the winner
Preserve every output. List individual results or summarize them with a median and spread; do not select only the fastest run. A score that moves between runs is itself useful evidence of variation, but it is not a diagnosis of its cause. Linux’s AMD Hardware Feedback Interface documentation describes platform feedback that the kernel or a userspace policy daemon can use for task-placement decisions. It does not establish that a guest can inspect its VDS placement. The Linux amd-pstate documentation describes an AMD CPU performance-scaling driver; record guest-visible CPU and kernel details when available, but do not infer that the guest controls the host’s frequency policy.

Test storage with distinct fio workloads
Storage performance depends on the workload. Use separate fio jobs for separate questions—for example, sequential throughput, random I/O latency at low queue depth, and IOPS at higher concurrency. Do not merge unlike jobs into one “overall” score unless you explain the weighting. Fio’s documentation provides controls for timed runs, ramp time, latency distributions, and CPU reporting.

Specify every job
Include enough detail for another administrator to reproduce the workload and understand what the numbers represent:
- fio version and complete command or job file.
- Target path, filesystem, file size or working set, and whether the test is file-based.
- Read/write pattern and mix, block size, I/O engine, direct-I/O setting, queue depth, and job count.
- Ramp-up and measurement duration.
- Bandwidth or IOPS, completion-latency percentiles, and results across repeated runs.
- Whether the guest was otherwise idle or was under a separately specified concurrent workload.
Do not assume direct I/O removes every cache or virtualization effect. State the selected setting and describe the guest filesystem and virtual-disk path; the setting alone does not establish how a provider’s storage stack behaves.

Match metrics to the operation
Throughput, IOPS, and latency answer different questions. Report latency as a distribution or percentiles, not only an average, and interpret it alongside the access pattern, block size, queue depth, job count, and duration. Fio’s documentation notes: “For file and directory operation engines, bw is meaningless.” That qualification applies to those engines; it does not make bandwidth meaningless for block-storage tests.
Fio can also report workload CPU time, context switches, and page faults. Those figures help describe the guest-side workload and its overhead, but they are not host-wide placement or provider-side contention telemetry.

Repeat, compare, and state the limits
Separate ramp-up from measurement
Run each workload more than once, keep the individual outputs, and use the same test path, file size, and settings across runs. If using a ramp time, report it separately from the measured interval. Note material changes across runs or between idle and concurrent-load conditions. A short run describes performance during that interval; it does not establish sustained performance, an SLA, or performance at other times.
Make provider comparisons like for like
When comparing VDS plans, keep the guest OS, tool version, workload, file size, and procedure as consistent as practical. Identify conditions you could not control rather than implying they were equivalent. Useful comparison axes are CPU results under the same fixed workload, low-queue-depth storage latency distributions, throughput or IOPS at stated concurrency, repeat-run consistency, and what each provider discloses about vCPU allocation, storage, and region.
There is no general Ryzen VDS score that can serve as a trustworthy baseline here. AMD’s EPYC 9005 FIO guide and EPYC 9004 FIO guide describe specific server systems and test setups, including factors such as CPU assignment and job concurrency. They are contextual examples, not expected results for an unspecified Ryzen VDS.
