Belchertown is pursuing grant funding to demolish three buildings at the former State School property, but the Town’s May 2026 update did not identify the buildings or say the grant had been awarded. The proposed removals are intended to make the site more attractive to developers as redevelopment continues.
What Belchertown has proposed
In a May 2026 update, the Town said the Belchertown Economic Development and Industrial Corporation (BEDIC) was working with MassDevelopment to apply for a Community One Stop grant. The requested money would fund demolition of three buildings at the end of a new cul-de-sac on the former State School property. BEDIC chair Beth Maroney said, “This will help make the property more appealing to developers.” Town of Belchertown, May 2026 update
The update describes an application being pursued—not an award or completed demolition. It does not name the three buildings, and the available Town updates do not establish whether the application was ultimately submitted or funded.
How the demolition proposal fits into redevelopment
Belchertown and BEDIC entered a development agreement with MassDevelopment in 2012. The Town reported in 2026 that more than $18 million had been secured from various sources since the agreement began. It also said MassDevelopment covers ongoing costs, including insurance, maintenance, security, and professional fees. These are Town-reported figures and descriptions. The redevelopment is presented as Carriage Grove, a mixed-use project. Removing buildings to prepare part of the property for development is one track; reusing the former Tadgell building is another.
Three unnamed buildings: proposed demolition
The grant proposal concerns three buildings at the end of a new cul-de-sac. The May update gives no names or other identifying details, so it is not possible to say which structures are slated for removal.

Former power plant: separate demolition work
The former State School power plant is not identified as one of the three buildings in the grant proposal. The Town said power plant work began in March 2025 and involved hazardous-material abatement, utility work, demolition, and restoration. Town of Belchertown, power plant project update
Former Tadgell building: planned reuse
The Town describes a mixed business-and-community concept for the former Tadgell building, originally built around 1960 as a State School nursery. At approximately 39,900 square feet over two levels, it could include business suites and shared spaces, a market and pantry, commercial kitchen, youth and recreation rooms, health and counseling services, an emergency shelter, gardens, and outdoor gathering areas. A 2025 assessment found the foundation, floors, and walls sound, while the roof and older building systems need significant work. Schematic design presentations to the Select Board were recorded in June 2026. Town of Belchertown, Tadgell project page

Which funding has been confirmed?
The September 19, 2026 Town update reported a separate $1,000,000 MVP Action Grant for converting the former Tadgell School into a community resilience hub. That award is for the Tadgell reuse initiative; it does not confirm funding for the three-building demolition proposal. Town of Belchertown, September 19, 2026 update
The Massachusetts FY2026–2030 Capital Investment Plan lists $1,000,000 in total “other funds” for Capital Improvements at Belchertown State School, with cleanup and site readiness as the stated purpose. Its annual lines show zero for FY2026 and FY2027. The plan does not establish that this amount was spent, awarded for the proposed demolition, or the Community One Stop grant.
