Start with one small problem you already understand, then build a version that lets one kind of user complete one repeated task. You can learn, develop and test on your own devices without paying for Apple Developer Program membership. Apple’s free membership overview distinguishes that work from distributing an app, when membership gives access to resources such as TestFlight and App Store Connect.
What app should you make first?
Choose an idea whose main benefit can be demonstrated with a small prototype—not one that depends on a large audience, a complex service or a polished launch. These are starting points, not validated market opportunities or Apple endorsements:

- A habit tracker for one routine: record whether you completed a single daily or weekly habit.
- A household grocery list: add and check off items for one household. Sharing between users can wait until a later version.
- A neighborhood walking log: record walks and a simple note or distance. Avoid adding location tracking unless it is essential to the first version.
- A personal flashcard tool: create and review cards for one subject or learning goal.
For a first project, a personal flashcard tool or single-routine tracker can be especially bounded: the core task can be tested without accounts or integrations. That is a practical scoping judgment, not evidence that either idea has stronger demand or profitability.
Use a simple test to narrow the idea
Write down the user, the repeated task and the smallest useful outcome. For example: “A student reviewing biology terms can make a set of cards and quiz themselves.” Keep the first version to that task. Then sketch the screens or make a rough prototype and ask a likely user to complete the task. Notice where they hesitate, misunderstand a label or cannot reach the outcome. Use that observation to cut or clarify features before expanding the project.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple’s Develop in Swift tutorials cover app design and development, while its App Store guidance recommends testing apps thoroughly. Those resources do not establish which app categories people want, what will earn money or which idea will succeed.
How to choose an idea you can finish
Compare candidate ideas on the constraints that affect an early prototype. The criteria below are a practical decision aid, not Apple-published benchmarks.
Rank #2
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
| Criterion | Ask | Why it matters at first |
|---|---|---|
| Small useful first version | Can one user get a meaningful result from a few screens and one main action? | A narrow version is easier to build and evaluate than a broad app concept. |
| Technical independence | Can the core feature work without accounts, paid APIs or complex integrations? | Those dependencies add setup and failure points before you have tested the main benefit. |
| Privacy and data sensitivity | Would the app handle health, financial, location or other sensitive information? | Less-sensitive, minimal data can make an initial prototype simpler to reason about. |
| Access to testers | Can you find a few people who resemble the intended user? | You need someone to try the core task and reveal confusion or missing steps. |
| Speed of demonstrating value | Can a rough prototype show the main benefit quickly? | If the benefit only appears after extensive setup or a large dataset, it is harder to test early. |
Prefer the idea that scores well on scope and testability, not the one with the longest feature list. If an idea requires sign-in or a third-party service, see whether you can first test the central task with local or sample data.

Explore code with Swift Playgrounds
Swift Playgrounds is designed for people new to coding to explore Swift, SwiftUI and app APIs. Apple documents creating app playgrounds on iPad or Mac, so you can begin learning and experimenting without starting with a Mac-based Xcode setup. Apple also offers interactive Playground Books for learning Swift.
Use Xcode when you are ready for that workflow
Xcode is Apple’s development environment and is downloaded from the Mac App Store. That makes a Mac relevant if you choose the Xcode route, but it does not mean every beginner needs to buy one before learning: Swift Playgrounds supports app creation on iPad as well as Mac. Check Apple’s current requirements for the version of Xcode you intend to use before choosing hardware.

Do you need to pay Apple to make an app?
No—not just to learn, develop or test on your personal devices. Apple says Xcode can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for this purpose, and its Programs overview explains that membership is not required to get started. This lets you explore an idea and test a personal prototype before deciding whether public distribution is worth pursuing.
Recommended Free Tools
Membership becomes relevant when you are preparing to distribute an app and need associated services and resources, including TestFlight for beta testing and App Store Connect for managing an app and its release. Apple’s membership comparison lists the Apple Developer Program at US$99 per membership year; local-currency pricing is available where offered, and eligible nonprofits, educational institutions and government entities may qualify for a fee waiver. Check the current enrollment page for your country and organization before budgeting, because price and eligibility can change.

What happens between a prototype and an App Store release?
- Choose a single core task. Define the user and the result they should achieve, then leave secondary features out of the first version.
- Learn and make a rough version. Start with Develop in Swift or Swift Playgrounds; use Xcode if you choose the Mac-based development workflow.
- Test the task with people. Ask likely users to try the prototype and observe whether they can complete the main action. Revise the scope or flow based on what happens, rather than adding features by assumption.
- Decide whether external testing or public distribution is the goal. Personal-device testing can come first. When you are ready for outside beta testers or App Store distribution, review the membership requirements and enroll if needed.
- Prepare the app through App Store Connect. Apple’s App Store Connect workflow covers setting up an app record, uploading builds, distributing beta versions with TestFlight, submitting for App Review, and monitoring performance or sales.
- Plan for review and sustainability. Apple reviews apps before distribution. Its App Store Pathway also recommends planning a business model early; that does not require monetizing a first prototype, but it is worth considering before you commit to a public product.
